The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Where I’m at so far:
I applied to 17 schools and have 10 auditions confirmed. I passed prescreens at Carnegie Mellon and Emerson and was declined by Coastal Carolina. Still waiting to hear back with prescreen results from Boco, Rider, Elon, and Ithaca. I am also waiting for my application to be reviewed so I can sign up for an audition at Molloy and UW Stevens Point. Hoping to get some more responses soonish so I can start either scheduling auditions or crossing schools off the list. Sometimes I think the waiting is worse/more nerve wrecking than getting a rejection would be!

@lithpool how did your your son hear about the acceptances from Florida southern and university of tampa? Email or snail mail? My daughter applied to both of those but has not heard yet. Thank you!

Just as an addition to the Muhlenberg discussion, we visited there when my D was auditioning . She is now a soph MT major at another school. She was not a fan of the school nor was I. For various reasons none of which was anything extreme. Allentown is somewhat of a bummer in areas but also has many wealthy areas & people who are theatre patrons who support the shows there and at DeSales which is nearby. Plus the ease of going to NYC is a plus. They also have a summer theatre in which they cast Muhlenberg students.
The school has an amazing theatre tech Dept and really impressive equipment etc and the school def spends $ on the theatre dept. I think they said that it was the largest major at the school or one of them and where they sink tons of $. The campus is small and sorta in a residential area but has some really beautiful buildings.
I have heard as others have mentioned that casting is super tough & there are a ton of theatre majors . Plus again it seems anyone can audition for shows regardless of major? Which didn’t sit well with me but i just think performance opportunities need to go to kids actually committed to making this work in the long haul & majoring in it. Jmho
Anyway just my two cents! It’s pricey too but I know they do offer quite a bit of $ and those talent scholarships etc .
I do remember that the theatre guy said that dance was very important there… which i found odd since it’s essentially non audition program. He actually kept harping on it to my D which annoyed her lol.

@creekside He applied to both schools (academically), at end of Sept (FSC)/beg of Oct (UTampa). He heard from FSC via snail mail 2-3 weeks later, and rec’d an email, then snail mail from Tampa about 2 weeks after applying.

Artistically, he was verbally accepted into the BFA program at both schools at MARCAS auditions by Dr. Roll at FSC & Mr. Staczar at UTampa. We are still in “follow up” mode with both.

Does anyone know if the CSS profile for School of Drama for Carnegie Mellon is due today? S is saying he heard it, but, me…I’m trying to procrastinate! LOL
Thanks!

@lithpool here is info directly from their website. Carnegie Mellon has a submission deadline of February 15th for the FAFSA, CSS PROFILE and tax documents. If your application materials arrive after this deadline it may delay your receipt of a finalized financial aid award.

@Boilermom Thank you! FAFSA done…just didn’t want to really spend tonight on CSS for one school…sigh…

I’ve seen reference to CSS profile but haven’t done it. My older D is a sophomore in college and we just did a FAFSA for her. Do you HAVE to do the CSS profile as well? Is that new? What’s the difference between the two? Thank you for any info…

Hey everyone, just so I don’t miss out on a deadline, which schools have an 11/15 deadline - meaning TODAY? Any and all help is appreciated. I really have no memory left, and it seems as though I am as unorganized as I have ever been!

@CaliMTdreams , only some schools require the CSS profile. Check each school. Usually they will send you an email to remind you if you have already applied. Univ of Michigan, Boston Conservatory, Elon and Manhattan School of Music ask for you to complete the CSS Profile. I’m sure there are others. They use it for determining private NON-federal aid at the school (not federal aid - which is what FAFSA is). The CSS profile asks way more financial info than the FAFSA does.

On my D’s list, the schools requesting a CSS profile are CMU, NYU, Boston U, Univ of Michigan, Ithaca, and Emerson. Check on each school’s financial aid website, and you’ll see if a CSS profile is required.

@love2share and @MTlizard Thank you both very much!!! Very helpful.

Ditto to what others have shared - I’d just add that it’s my understanding that this is especially important if you’ve applied EA anywhere. That way, when your student hears admitted/not they will also receive the financial piece. Otherwise, you’ll be still waiting and wondering.

Hello Everyone -
Another person here who has been following these discussions for the past 12 months or so but just now found time to register. It’s been interesting to see the various methods that folks used to determine how many places to apply. My son has been performing for probably 10+ years in various community and school productions and has been fortunate enough to have some mentors who has given us some solid advice. We started with a list of 10 schools and visited all of them last summer. My son actually was accepted to CCM for their summer intensive so he was able to get a first had view of what that experience was like. We ended up applying to only 4 schools (CCM did not make the cut), and he had his first audition this past weekend (which went extremely well). For those of you whose kids have applied to 20+ schools, that would wear me out! Two other auditions are scheduled and we are still awaiting to hear if he was first admitted to his other choice (hopefully will get a decision in the next week). Best of skills to all applicants and best of patience to all of us parents!

If you send a prescreen through GetAcceptd, does the response always come through an email from that site? You don’t have to check the school websites do you?

My D got her first artistic acceptance today! She auditioned for the SC School of the Arts located at Anderson University. It was her safety, but she is happy to have it! They gave her their max scholarship as well, so that is a bonus!

Congratulations @carriemc95 - that must feel great. She’s going to college next year!!!

Best of luck @alsolheid and to your son @Mark80! You must feel very confident in your “fit” to only apply to 4 audition programs and that’s really great.

@carriemc95 Congratulations! That takes some stress off of the rest of the audition season!

TCU requires the CSS profile. If it is required it typically means they have a large donor endowment for scholarships and aid. They use it for merit, department and financial awards, or a combination award.
