Hi I know someone in the school now and she gave me that number. She is a double major theater and something else. This is how many kids in total audition for the shows so could include kids who audition but aren’t majors. Freshman year she was thrilled just to get a callback but is now frustrated by not being in the show. Some schools have auditions for the showcase so that is maybe what happened here? again I’m no expert but this is what I’m told by a kid in the program so (secondhand).
This does not reflect 2018 (Class of 2022) results, but here’s a list I compiled last year while we were going through this process. The numbers are previous years’ BFA students accepted/# of girls accepted. It just illustrates what we all know - how unicornish these BFA audition programs are! And that’s the reason many of us cast a wide net. The offers and the rejections don’t always come from the places you expect.
Baldwin Wallace 18/8
Boston Conservatory 53/37
Carnegie Mellon 12/5
Elon 20/11
Emerson 14/13
Ithaca MT 25/10
LIU - Post 16/8
Manhattan SOM 28/14
Michigan 21/11
NYU Steinhardt 24/12
Pace 31/17
Penn State 16/6
Point Park 35/13
Rider 49/38
Syracuse 20/12
Temple 18/9
Texas State 14/6
U of Miami 16/8
UC Irvine 8/4
UCLA MT 7/4
University of Utah 22/14
For us, after prescreens, it was about 15 schools, 4 BFA MT offers and, out of that, one net dream school. My rough math after prescreens: 198 girl spots available on our list. 15 schools X 500 finalists for each school = 7500/3 for duplication = 2500 net applicants for 198 girl spots = 8% odds of girl acceptance to one or more schools. Odds for the boys are a little better, I think, but the all pre-screen finalists are mad-talented and all programs look to balance for “type.”
Cheering for all of you from the sidelines! The auditions are the fun part, then there’s a long, agonizing wait for most kids until mid-to late March (or longer!) for decisions. That to me, if where this site became invaluable for moral support. I couldn’t bear to post last year - it was just too intensely personal. But I definitely lurked. So I hope I can pay it forward a bit this year.
At the end of February I can post the date we heard from each school and how our daughter heard the artistic admit decision (student email vs. school portal vs. snail mail.)
@CaliMTdreams @MTlizard “Only some schools require the CSS profile. Check each school. Usually they will send you an email to remind you if you have already applied. Univ of Michigan, Boston Conservatory, Elon and Manhattan School of Music ask for you to complete the CSS Profile. I’m sure there are others. They use it for determining private NON-federal aid at the school (not federal aid - which is what FAFSA is). The CSS profile asks way more financial info than the FAFSA does.”
Adding U of Miami, Fordham, CMU, Emerson, Northwestern, NYU and Syracuse to the list of schools that request CSS.
@DramaLlama18 One thing that is not accurate about your numbers in post #921 is that the number of slots available in the class does NOT equal the number of people accepted at MOST schools. Most programs accept more students than the number of slots available because not everyone accepted is going to enroll (most students have more than one acceptance) and so the numbers you cite are the numbers yielded or slots available and not the number accepted, which should be a greater number.
@DramaLlama18 So was this the list of schools your child applied to and out of that she got 15 prescreens?
What schools was your daughter admitted at @DramaLlama18 ?? Thank you for the info!!
Congrats @carriemc95 ! It must feel good and relieve a little pressure to know that your D has that first acceptance! That school was on my D’s original list, but we live far enough that we had to cut it due to the cost of auditioning.
@carriemc95 Congrats to your D! What a wonderful feeling! Even though it may not be her ‘dream’ school, I know my S floated on it & felt a bit of relief for quite some time when he rec’d his acceptance to his safety. He was like ‘I can go to college!!!’ So happy & excited for your D!
@BWmama I don’t believe any of S’s schools had a deadline of today. Without knowing your D’s list, it’s tough to figure out. I sent you a PM.
@Mark80 my d went to the weekly CCM MT intensive class and loved it. I didn’t think it was the best fit for her because of limited dance options but she was so sad when she didn’t get in. The teachers are not the same and I’m sure the classes are different than a camp atmosphere. Curious where he did apply. And only a guy can get away with 4 apps unless one is a non-audition safety ?
@soozievt yes - you are correct re: yield. I did account for that somewhat by dividing the pool of prescreen applicants by 3, since many of the same kids are accepted to multiple schools. Even if you double my 8% (again! very rough math) still crazy odds,
@frisbee3 @elledaspitzer She did have 15 auditions after prescreens, and we were so optimistic, even knowing the crazy odds. NYU and UCLA were on campus and then she did all of the rest at Chicago and LA Unifieds. After auditions there was one quick BFA MT yes (LIU at Chicago Unifieds) followed by 4 or so redirects to acting and lots and lots of heart-breaking no’s. Finally, two more BFA yeses from Utah and U of Miami in late March. The BoCo yes came at the very, very end of March. Waitlisted at UCLA. We had visited a lot of the schools but NONE of the ones she had offers from. We came to know and love all the “yes” programs and studied the fit and the finances. Quickly re-directed a spring break trip to Boston and BoCo is the one - class of 2022. We did have fun along the way, but that wait through the month of March was rough. Happy to answer any and all questions. And cheering for all your fabulous kids and the class of 2023. If you’re planning to visit BoCo, my daughter would be happy to meet you.
@MTdreamz - He ended up applying to Northern Kentucky, Xavier (one of the best theatre schools you haven’t heard of), Ohio U, and Ohio Northern. We did quite a bit of homework last spring and summer so we were ready when we visited all of his initial choices (which included an additional 6 schools). We also headed to an audition workshop in NYC which gave us a completely different perspective on the number of schools where he should apply vs. everything I had previously read (which was then echoed by some respected faculty members at local universities). Since he narrowed his choices early, he’s now been able to really immerse himself in the audition process and actually enjoy it.
@Mark80 Very cool! BFA at Northern Kentucky, Ohio U and Ohio Northern? @MTmommers wrote a great summary of Xavier Cincinnati on this thread back in early Oct if any of you want to go back and look! Newer BA MT program that does indeed sound very impressive. Keep us posted on your process.
^^Agree the odds are still small! Just wanted people to realize that the number of spots in a class is not the same as the number accepted. Acceptance rates are based on how many offers of admission out of number who applied. It’s not based on how many enroll.
@Mark80 my D was accepted to Northern Kentucky. She ultimately decided not to go there it is rather far from us etc but again nicest people we encountered there. I have heard the shows they do are also quite good. We not get to see one when we were there unfortunately. She also attended a tap class while there & was happy with what she saw .
I also heard about the new MT degree at Ohio university. Sounded interesting and I think they said they are going to Unifieds?
During admissions talk at BW on the admit/yield question --they admit 30 with an ideal yield of 17-20 (but last year had more enroll so have 22 in class 2022).
I noticed Webster Univ has this statement on their website for Years 1 & 2 students: Required courses outside of conservatory include: Music theory, Musicianship, private voice and piano, and dance (ballet or jazz). They don’t have that statement for Years 3 & 4. Does that mean they want you to pay out of pocket and outside of the school day?
Does anybody know anything about the non-audition musical theater BA at Christopher Newport university?
@DramaLlama18 - Correct on BFA at NKU, OU, and ONU. BA MT as Xavier, but he’s also very interested in doubling with their Theatre Education track as well if that is where he ends up. And I went back to read the post that was made on Xavier and it’s spot on. My son was fortunate enough to have been taught in a masterclass by Stephen this past year and he thought the world of him. We’ve now seen two productions and are heading there again this weekend (and they are all top notch). The small school size is also very attractive.
