The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

If anyone has been waiting for the additional boco dates to go up they are all up now… unifieds etc

@frisbee3, my daughter and I visited CNU last year and liked both the school and their theatre program, but honestly had just enough time for a surface visit (e.g., tour, interview, etc). Here’s what we learned. They are housed in the gorgeous Ferguson Center. They have scholarship auditions (I think) in February. They offer classes in dance, acting, and music and really have great facilities for all 3. They do 4 mainstage productions and one musical, plus some student led productions. Students are cast in shows regularly (most students are cast every year).

The town of Newport News is small and close to the beach. The students were getting ready for commencement and they seemed pretty engaged and happy.

We got to speak to Greg Lloyd and he was very nice and gave us a facility tour and answered questions.

It is a liberal arts school and there are traditional campus activities like fraternities, sororities, clubs, and sports. They have a leadership program and an honor program that a student can integrate with a theatre major.

Anyway, hope this is helpful. Good luck to you!

Hi @BWmama My daughter is a freshman MT at Webster this year. She is taking 18 hours total. I’m not looking at our final statement at the moment, but the classes you mentioned are not outside of the university and I don’t recall additional fees. Music classes and Dance classes are in their respective departments that are not technically part of the Conservatory. I know that next semester she will be taking a full load and auditing some classes at the same price point. (It gets a little vague after scholarships, grants, loans, and our monthly payment plan subtracted from a long list of university fees as is typical for most colleges.) Yes, her days are full- and she loves it! The conservatory faculty has been great helping her select classes and with overall time management. The process has been much easier than it was with my older children not in an arts program. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

@artandtechmom did your daughter end up applying there? Trying to figure out other than Muhlenberg what are some good “back up” programs that are still good programs. I’ve heard CNU, Muhlenberg and Hofstra. If you have any others you’ve come across I’d appreciate the suggestions.

@Mark80 actually one of the students in my d’s CCM classes went to Xavier so I have heard of it but honestly don’t know much about it. My d also has friends at or graduated from Ohio Northern and they love it. Best of luck to your son!

@frisbee3 By doing a blind curriculum ranking, my S also selected North Central College in Naperville, IL, (just outside Chicago), and Columbia College Chicago as his safety schools. He was accepted at NCC with nice merit and has his audition for talent $ scheduled just before Chicago Unifieds. Still waiting to hear on CCC, but it was a later submission, and he submitted his prescreens for talent $. (At least I think that’s how it works!) He had CNU on his list, but visited the area, (not the school), and wasn’t thrilled with the area, so it came off his list. (Although I hear the campus is beautiful…and it would’ve been closer to home…)

@frisbee3, I second the blind curriculum review and/or a campus visit or talking to somebody in the department through phone or email. If you go to this thread, you can see a huge list of schools including those that don’t require an audition by state. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/801037-big-list-of-mt-colleges-by-state-p17.html. There really are so many choices and it really depends on what your kid wants. If you want to message me and tell me what your criteria might be, I’d be happy to see if I can suggest something for you (if I know about it :).

@lithpool - Can I ask what you mean by a blind curriculum ranking? And thank you for your suggestions.

They mean removing the college name from the documents and making the choice based strictly on the curriculum without knowing which college you are ranking.

After the blind ranking, it might be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the schools policies within the university as a whole and the major itself. How are late night load-ins handled? What is the attendance policy? What are the GPA requirements within the major? etc

Wow @beachymom - do any of the MT programs have GPA requirements to proceed with the major? I hadn’t heard that, I’d only heard of cut/no-cut programs.

@CaMom13 - Yes, there are schools that you have to meet a minimum GPA or you can be asked to leave the program. Some schools not only consider juries, but also whether the student is applying themselves in their coursework. My D’s is that way. They are put on probation and given a chance to improve, but if not then they are asked to leave the program.

@CaMom13 I think the requirements will be given upon acceptance. For the one artistic acceptance that my daughter has received so far, it was detailed out as far as GPA expectations within the major. Her scholarship renewal was also contingent upon meeting those requirements. (I think it was a 3.0 - nothing crazy or unable to attain)

That makes sense @carriemc95 - I don’t think my D’s school sent anything like that with the acceptance but they did mention at Parent’s Day that freshmen who weren’t making a certain standard for grades would get a letter mid-term and would be expected to meet with the Dean’s office to figure out to get their grades up. But I think that’s for the whole school, not just the MT program. I didn’t ask what the cut off was but I assumed it was pretty low because many freshmen do have a rough time acclimating to the college workload.

A comment on the CSS profile - based on our experience last year. BoCo doesn’t require it. Berklee College of Music does, but BoCo does not. Very confusing.

Has anyone heard from Rider or Milliken?

@CaMom13 - the schools totally vary in their policies (and not just GPA). @carriemc95 makes a good point about scholarships - make sure you know those, too!

Hi, we heard back from BOCO on Friday and have the audition all set up but today my D received an email regarding an interview over the computer…is this something new? Has anyone done this yet?

@minicp I did it a few weeks ago. It is bizarre, to say the least. As far as I remember, it is 6 timed questions, 5 spoken/video recorded and 1 written. If I am correct, you have 30-45 seconds to prepare an answer and 45-60 seconds to answer (I’m not quite sure, but I think that’s it.) And I believe 5 minutes to type the written response. Also, Yes. This is the first year they’ve done it.

@apfulmer … thanks for answering so quickly and … oh wow. Yeah she had never heard of this before so she was kind of caught off guard. This whole process just gets more and more complicated.
