The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@MTOverload we are also waiting a long time on Rider! Submitted 10/7. I just looked at their website to see who to email and other than the general admissions email I could not find a contact. Did you call admissions or the theatre department? We know we won’t hear back from Elon and Penn State until later, but Rider is the last of the others.

Has anyone heard from TX State?

MT MOM 2019:
Thats a standard amount of time for auditions. When auditioning you can make a decision very quickly almost as soon as the person opens their mouth to sing:) The staff at the schools are "pro"s and see thousands of kids auditions and get very good at choosing. You said almost everyone you spoke with had the same amount of time in room? Did anyone get asked to sing a third song or move to a diff room? That would show above and beyond interest…otherwise I’m sure your daughter has a shot.
Remember the prescreens are in the thousands, live auditions only in the hundreds and the final choices are below 20 in most BFA top tier schools.

Be prepared when auditioning in NYC for B’way shows you may only have 8-16 bars at chorus calls. And sometimes they just “type” people in to audition which means you line up in the room and they choose based on looks who they want to stay to sing.

As far as Muhenberg they have 400 MT kids in their program. There are Seniors in their program who have yet to make it onto the stage in a MainStage production even as chorus members. That said, I think I heard that if you are a scholarship student you are guaranteed roles- can someone confirm this??

@carriemc95 , this is what we got from TX State via Accepted:
“Please be advised that we will be sending callback decisions to all applicants following the December 1st, 2018 application deadline. Anyone who submitted before the Dec. 1st deadline should receive notification no later than December 4th. Anyone submitting on the deadline will receive notification within 7 days.”

Thanks @MTlizard ! That wasn’t the message from Accepted my son got in early October (it said “you’ll hear shortly” but to call if more than 2 weeks). Sounds like they have updated that deadline on future responses. Makes sense!

@LIMTMom HI - I called the number that is on the getacceptd email after you submit your prescreen. Go to Getacceptd, then messages, then look at the Rider email.

@lithpool @stagedoormama So far my D’s only pre-screen No has been from CMU, after seeing your posts about scholarships, (though she would hate to hear me say it), I’m kinda glad it was a no, lol. She was a little down after the no from CMU, but she has passed the pre-screens from FSU, Shenandoah and Pace, so that made that rejection a bit easier to swallow. Still waiting on Elon and BOCO…

@mamaboyz I was speaking with the head of the Muhlenberg theatre program at a college fair last week and we were discussing the performance opportunities considering the program is so large and that you don’t have to be a major to audition for the shows. He said casting is based entirely on talent level and the casting needs of each individual show, so it definitely did not sound like casting is guaranteed for anyone.

@mamaboyz my daughter was offered a talent scholarship to Muhlenberg. The letter said nothing about guaranteed roles. 400 students! That is insane.

@MTMom2019 Last year I think there were around 4ish acceptances at BW from fall auditions as well as a handful of WLs (My kid was a WL). So yes - it does happen. And as someone else said, this is a pretty standard amount of time in an audition. Fingers crossed for you and all who had their BW auditions last weekend.

@mamaboyz where did you get that number of 400 kids in MT? My daughter just auditioned and she was told of much smaller numbers. In fact she was told that while many start out as Mts, they often switch and by the time Senior Showcase rolls around there are only a handful of MT majors.

Per Muhlenberg’s webpage they have no MT major and “over 250” Theatre majors. But their Senior Showcase seems to present only a couple of dozen students.

Some feedback on the numbers and odds for programs. During a side conversation during auditions at Wright State this weekend, one mother and I spoke with a current student who works for the staff in organizing auditions and how they evaluate students. She said they’ll have about 600 auditions and this year’s class will be 14-16 (up from the normal 12-14 because of a smaller class last year) - however, she said 250 auditioners are eliminated almost immediately because they are completely unprepared (music not marked, monologues not memorized, etc). I get the feeling that would not be an issue with most in this group…

She also said a big determining factor for them, while you obviously have to be talented, is personality. They want people they want to work with and not someone they perceive will be a challenge to get along with for either the instructors or fellow students. She admitted a couple “difficult” personalities sneak through, but not many. Seems to further support the theory of WSU being a very supportive environment.

@CaMom13 you are correct that there is no “MT” major at Muhlenberg. Students can basically create one by majoring in theatre and then minoring in both dance and vocal performance.

@afterp89 - just a (now) funny comment on that - my D completely forgot her monologue in the middle of her first audition. She was prepared but… these things happen.

@MTMom2019 that’s it for BW. And they do make decisions from that! My S graduated this year (2018) and D2 was on the wait list for 2018. Sometimes, they will ask for your third song, but I wouldn’t say that is the norm.

@MToverload thank you so much! I called and at first they said her decision was on acceptd but I told them it was not and they put me on hold then said there were 2 more faculty who needed to review it! Hopefully soon!!!

My S also just auditioned at Muhlenberg and the director was very clear that there are no guaranteed roles for anyone. He said it twice and clarified it again after someone asked a question about the policy. He also said that with all of the productions at the school, there are hundreds of roles every year and most kids have plenty of opportunities to be on stage.

Thanks to everyone for all the info re: Muhlenberg - very helpful!

Hi everyone! Late to the party here, but I’ve been religiously following CC boards for the past year and as a student auditioning this year, I decided I it was time to post. I’m a pretty nontraditional MT applicant as I did two years studying political science at a small liberal arts college, did a life 180, and am now taking a gap year and doing local theater while I apply to MT programs. While super supportive, my parents know nothing about this crazy process, so these threads have been a godsend during all the times I had questions and felt like I was going it all alone.
