The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

S submitted to Emerson on 10/29 and heard back on 10/31.

There was no pre-screen for Emerson last year.

Prescreens are new for Emerson this year, and it’s only for MT.

not sure if this info will help anyone, but hope so…likely just more repeat info that most of you already know…
was at the Penn state Arts day today…

Prescreens submitted before 9/30 were notified already
prescreens bw 10/1-11/30 will be notified Jan 7th

last year had 1800 applicants, 456 made it through prescreens target a class of 12-14.

only other thing of note it seems as if they try/plan to notify auditioners within 2 weeks off accepted, rejected or deferred till all auditions are completed.

very well run program, very impressive…was unable to stay for the main stage production of Clybourne Park.

hope that is helpful to some of you??

We still haven’t heard from BoCo. She sent her prescreen on September 23rd. Any advice? Should she call them?

@MToverload Any word yet from Rider? Sounds like our kids submitted about the same time. We’re still waiting…

I think everyone who has heard from BOCO so far checked “early action”. (someone correct me if i’m wrong) They have not posted any spring audition date options–the only options are for the Dec. dates.

D heard that Boco might be letting everyone who has not heard know on 11/15 but who knows!

@MTMom2019 I was wondering if I should contact BOCO as well. We submitted Sept. 28.

We have not heard either but submitted in September, as well–we also did not “early action”…so maybe @MTJourney19, you’re onto something.

@FlaMTmom I just got off the phone with someone at Rider actually lol. He said that there were still a few people who needed to view her videos but that we should hear pretty soon?

Now, I realize CMU was a longshot, in every way, but I just went on their website to look at potential scholarship $ and saw this…and there’s nothing else listed…sigh…

ATTENTION INCOMING STUDENTS: Beginning with the 2019-2020 academic year, the Presidential and Carnegie Scholarship Programs will no longer be awarded to incoming students.

If anyone from the West Coast is applying to Muhlenburg, their dates for Los Angeles and San Francisco auditions (scholarship purposes) are listed on their website now. You can sign up for your slot online. Hope that helps someone as we have been waiting for the dates to be listed ourselves.

@lithpool - CMU has always been known as being a bit more stingy with aid, and this definitely won’t help that perception any. Yikes.

Thanks @MToverload for posting the note about Muhlenburg. Does anyone have a sense of how genuinely “optional” they are? Anyone who’s visited able to share impressions? Thanks so much!

@212121 what does “optional” mean? My daughter auditioned at Muhlenberg, was accepted with a talent scholarship, but chose another school. I’m happy to answer any questions about our visit.

@collegemom2000 Auditions are required, just recommended, especially if a student wants to be considered for scholarships. (Which it sounds like your daughter received - congrats!) Seems as though as long as we can manage yet another school visit, my son should go for it. Can I ask what you liked, didn’t like, and how your daughter made her decision?

@212121 correct you do not need to audition to be a theatre major there. The audition is for money. However, it’s a very competitive college to gain acceptance to so by auditioning, your son is also showing legitimate interest in the school which can only help when it comes to admissions. Many people use Muhlenberg as a safety school and they know it.

As far as what we liked, the program head was incredibly kind and welcoming. The performing arts facility is very nice and they seem to put a lot of money into their arts programs. The MT program has a pretty good reputation and we liked that, too. My daughter, however, did not like the area at all. It’s a very small town in the middle of an economically depressed area without much to do as well as a very small student body. She wanted to be in a city with a thriving theatre scene and access to a lot of activities outside of campus. The other reason she didn’t choose the school was that she knows people who are not happy there because of the lack of performance opportunities (they seem to have higher than average number of students majoring in MT, likely because it is non-audition, which means you could spend four years there and never get cast in a show.) I definitely wouldn’t let that scare you away. It’s a wonderful school, just not what she was looking for.

Thanks so much for all this information - really helpful! Looks like we’ll be making the trek to Allentown at some point soon.

My daughter had a wonderful time at her audition at Baldwin Wallace last weekend. Everyone was so friendly and nice, and the whole day was very well organized. The students were great and the whole program was very impressive. That being said, my daughter, plus anyone else she spoke to, sang two one minute songs for five people (including the head of the program), did her one minute monologue for one person and participated in an 80+ person dance call. Can you really get an acceptance based on that? They spent so little time with her, I am thinking we should just write this one off.
