@lithpool Just a note on Columbia College of Chicago as a safety. My info may be dated but this is what they said during D’s audition season (she’s class of 21): “At this time, we do not audition prior to enrollment. All students who are accepted to Columbia begin as a BA student and then audition for the BFA in MT Performance their first or second semester.” So, maybe not a sure thing, though I imagine getting talent $ would indicate likely success in the audition? Anyway, Chicago is a great theatre community so it would be a lovely choice if you are OK with a little uncertainty. Best of luck to your S!!
@MTMomma13 Hang in there! My S got 2 nos to start things off, followed by 2 yeses, with 3 yet to come. What a rollercoaster we all are on! Best of luck to your D!
@MTMomma13, don’t get discouraged! There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to which schools say no as opposed to yes. We used basically the same videos for all the prescreens and got 2 no’s (CMU and UCF) and then a bunch of yes’s (FSU, Pace, BOCO, Shenandoah) (still waiting on Elon). Hopefully you will only get “yes” from here on in!
@CentralOHmomof4 Thank you for that info. I think I knew that, but forgot it along the way. I think that we may have picked it as a safety for that specific reason…that at least he would be studying MT, with a chance to get a BFA…but, honestly, I can’t remember anymore! He also got accepted into his other safety school, which is also a BA, but it looks like the other, North Central College, will be a better fit for us financially. (He got a great merit scholarship & is auditioning for them just before Chicago Unifieds for Talent $). It’s also just outside Chicago, which was one of my S’s requirements for a safety, if he didn’t get accepted into a BFA MT somewhere.
@MTMomma13 @frisbee3 @FlaMTmom @minicp Our first prescreen was a no too. That was a tough day, as it was from his top reach school. BUT, the day got better bc he received notification in email & in mail that he was accepted into the BFA MT program at Florida Southern College. (And the talent $ made me happy too!). And then the next day he heard from Columbia College Chicago with an acceptance into their program, with an extended offer to join the Honors Program. So that was a big hit in the household too! The highs/lows of this process is cray-cray! But we are anxiously awaiting to hear from his other PS, and are hopeful that at least one will be a yes. Fingers, toes, eyes, etc are all crossed.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! May your day be filled with turkey, laughter, and funny stories to revisit next Thanksgiving! (And no MT for a day!) Gobble, Gobble!
@lithpool My D is auditioning at Florida Southern in February. She was accepted academically and received a nice academic scholarship. I take it by your post that they also award talent $? I was trying to figure out how to PM you but cant seem to do it.
Passed Rider - yay!
@minicp my son is auditioning at Florida Southern next Saturday. He was academically accepted in September and we received a nice merit award last month. There is talent money available there as well.
@lithpool, did your son audition at MARCAS? I believe next week is their first on-campus. Did Dr. Roll let him know right away? This is one of my son’s first choices.
@NYKaren Thank you for letting me know, as it is a private school, the more $ the better lol. My D was hoping to audition sooner than February, but unfortunately, that’s the only weekend that she doesn’t have some sort of conflict. BAL to your S on his audition!
@minicp I hear you! Thank you and BAL to your daughter as well. It’s kind of nice to have this weekend off from auditions! We’ve been going hard at it since October – 4 done (Fairleigh Dickenson, Emerson, BW and Nazareth) and 2 more to go before Christmas (Florida Southern & Hartt). I’m mentally drained.
@MToverload Congrats to your D on the Rider prescreen!! We’re (still) waiting to hear from them.
A question for those of you who submitted to Rider. Their website instructions include the following words:
Slate your name and pieces you are performing at the beginning of each video…Each video should be no longer than 1 minute in length.
Reading that, it seems the 1 minute limit is stated as applying to the whole video, and the video must include a slate, which means the actual piece has to be limited further - if the slate is 5-10 seconds, the piece itself has to be 50-55 seconds. Which seems different than what I see for many other schools - other schools typically state the song or monologue must be limited to x seconds.
We have songs and monologues submitted for other schools that are exactly 60 seconds, but when you add the slate it becomes 65-70 seconds. I guess we need to make new versions just for Rider?
@FlaMTmom Thanks - it seemed like we waited forever for that one, and she was so excited! Good luck!!
@junior72 I just went and looked at what D submitted to Rider, and her videos including the slate were over 1 minute (songs themselves were about 1 min each plus slate). I think you’ll be fine submitting what you have.
@junior72 Ditto. My son’s Rider videos were just over a minute including the slate. (That said, we haven’t gotten the prescreen decision yet!)
Does anyone have recommendations for inexpensive, but clean place to stay, while auditioning, at university of Michigan? Close to north campus, I guess?
@junior72 I was told that if you go 5-10 seconds over, it’s completely fine. So I wouldn’t worry about editing a different version of the monologues.
mt summer help ~ Microtel fits all those requirements… nothing fancy but clean, close and cheap!
@NYKaren @minicp My S was verbally accepted by Dr. Roll at MARCAS. She was very nice, and the program sounds great! She had him submit more work for talent $, which we heard back from this week. This ones a front runner for my S too…I’d like to hear more after your visit if you don’t mind sharing. BAL to your S next weekend!
@MToverload Congrats! What a good way to start the holiday weekend!
