@toowonderful Yes, correct. Someone mentioned they knew someone who was admitted artistically (I think to Chapman) and then not admitted academically. That wouldn’t happen at Michigan. I was just speaking to that part it the process.
@toowonderful Are you sure Emerson is all or nothing? It could have changed to that, but when my D applied to Emerson EA for the BFA in MT, she got accepted in the EA round academically and then deferred to the RD round artistically and then eventually was denied artistically. So, it seemed you could be admitted to the college without being admitted to the BFA program, which of course would be of no interest to my kid. But we also were naive back then because when the think envelope with all the congrats and bells and whistles came in mid-December from Emerson we were excited she had gotten into her first and only audition at that point, only to read the fine print that she was deferred for the BFA and accepted to the college.
@collegeboundSam glad you liked my Jeter Analogy & congrats on the early acceptances!
@soozievt - adding it to list was based on a kid I know (high stats - should have been a shoo in for academics) but have no personal experience. Then again, so much has changed - Emerson wasn’t a prescreen school my D’s year either…
@elledaspitzer I always like to plug University of Minnesota - Duluth Campus (BFA MT) for little known programs. My son received an offer from them, and we loved the program, the people, and the campus. He just was ultimately drawn to a different program. They are very tied into the Minneapolis/St. Paul theater scene as well as a professional theater in Duluth. When we were there, the acting chair was a Yale grad who was in the same MFA class as Sigourney Weaver and a few other big names. The person that was heading up recruiting had many professional credits and an MFA from Rutgers. A couple of additional northern midwest schools that we did not look at, but you could look into are NDSU and UND. Both have BFA programs. UND is at the NYC Combines. I’m not sure if NDSU auditions anywhere other than on campus.
I took the dive…and called USC! (Makes me nervous…even though they all say “call with questions”.) They informed me that they “needed a bit more time” and no MT information has been sent out yet…but would be sent out by 5:00 PST today. Best of luck to all who are waiting!
@MThopeful99
May i message you about the gap year process? I would love to hear more about your experience with the application process after the gap year
@elledaspitzer - some ideas. We have heard of people looking into all of these, although have no personal experience with any of them. But may be worth looking into. I really don’t know anything about any of them so could not tell you if they are truly safeties or not. But I do think they are lesser know than some other programs. I would try to talk to someone who has been there and can vouch for the training etc… to see if they are places in which you could be interested.
Western Kentucky University (I believe you audition for BFA in 2nd year)
Northern Kentucky University (it is an audition school but perhaps lesser known than some others on these boards)
University of Kentucky BA with musical theater certificate
Wooster - good drama department
Kent State
Bowling Green State
University of Alabama BA with Musical Theater Concentration and a BFA Musical Theater
University of Mississippi BFA with Musical Theater Concentration
Western Carolina
Anderson University (South Carolina) BFA Musical Theater
West Virginia University BFA Musical Theater
Lipscomb University (Tennessee) BFA Musical Theater
University of Memphis BFA Musical Theater
Shorter College - BFA Musical Theater
Piedmont College - BA Musical Theater
Brenau University - BFA Musical Theater

@luvbloominroses …tks so much! My s isn’t on the edge of his seat but I’ve been trying to plan! We’ll sit tight.
Good luck @luvbloominroses @212121 and anyone else waiting on USC MT prescreens!
Mine just got a no from USC. Good luck to everyone still waiting.
My D just now received an email from USC, and it was a “no.” Better luck to the other applicants!
@toowonderful When that happens, which generally comes first? Academic or artistic? Or does it vary for each school? Great info, btw!
@Notmath1 Usually academic comes first, and you wait for the artistic.
@Notmath1 - for the schools with rolling academic admissions we got most acceptances pretty quickly - the records was set by BW, offered IN the admissions office while taking the tour in summer ;). Ithaca was unique. If memory serves D was denied about a month after she auditioned at Chicago unifieds - and then got a big “Congrats” message from university a few days later.
Anyone get a formal BFA acceptance from LIU? My D received formal academic acceptance and scholarship offer, and an informal artistic acceptance by email back in late October. But we still haven’t received a formal BFA letter though. Thought we’d have it by now…
Ugh. S didn’t pass Otterbein or Ithaca. I hate this up and down.
Just heard back from USC. Sadly a no. ‘Yes’ to Boston Conservatory, Colorado Boulder, and Emerson, so far. No’s from USC and OU. Already accepted to Long Island, Lindenwood, and UTA. I have auditions for Roosevelt, Montclair, Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma city, and Northern Colorado, as well. Very scared for this process!
My son got a reject to ED school in NC and i was crying like crazy and my son was all, oh darn, and started eating a sandwich?! Ok maybe it was a school of mom’s choice rather than the son :))
@hstauss2019 - you are doing great. No one gets in everywhere, just keep plugging along. We found the prescreens to be the most difficult and frustrating part of the application process. BAL on your upcoming auditions!!!
@legomania - that is toooo funny! My D was rejected by her ED school and we were all sad but a year later, we’re grateful! These things do have a way of working out.
Sorry for all the USC “nos” - after a long wait that’s got to be annoying. But again - new program. Hope someone got a yes!
