@hstauss2019, we did not do USC but I can relate. Focus on the live auditions. You guys have a lot to look forward to and focus on. Let the “no’s” go. Advice per my DS. He says it’s their loss!
@PugsleyAddams, we didn’t pass Otterbein either. It’s definitely an up and down process but keep focused on the ups!!
Thanks @NYKaren I know… he got a yes from other prescreens, but it seems like the latest one is the one that sticks with you until the next “yes”. Thanks for the positive thoughts!
@SoCalPops my daughter is a freshman at LIU this year. She received and informal acceptance in October from LIU when they were in our region doing auditions. She received a letter December 7th from the theatre department offering her a place in the program and encouraging her to apply for the school.
@socalpops POST. Brooklyn campus doesn’t have the theatre department. They were actually two different schools operating separately until recently. POST is on Long Island obviously. It’s a beautiful campus. Look up the history sometime. It’s very interesting.
@SoCalPops my daughter loves the program. She can’t speak highly enough of her teachers and has made great friends. She’s close to the city as well so in the weekends she’s has taken a few trips to see shows, etc. there has been a lot more writing than she expected. Seems to be pretty intensive and she has learned quite a bit but she said every academic assignment has been important and taught her something as it relates to her craft.
@jollyballoon We are still waiting on Marymount Theater notification too. My S called his admissions counselor yesterday. He was told he would hear this week.
@SoCalPops I would reach out to them if you haven’t. My daughter did get an artistic acceptance letter from LIU Post from Maria Porter back in November after her verbal acceptance during MARCAS.
@jollyballoon A friend of my daughter’s must have done EA for MMC because we ran into them this weekend and she said she’d been accepted to their BFA MT program. My D is auditioning for them in SF on Friday! Her first audition of this whole scary process!!!
Can someone walk us through what a unified audition day looks like in Chicago? My D has 7 auditions from the Sat to the Thursday inclusive, a very packed schedule. Most are at Palmer House, some in scattered locations nearby. For the Palmer auditions, just some advice would be appreciated. Does each school have a sign-in table? Are they easy to find? How far ahead of an audition should she show up? Is there usually a warm-up space, or are they all just sitting around in a room waiting to be called? In your experience do auditions tend to run on time, or do they get very behind? Some schools ask for sheet music, some “may” have an accompanist but ask that you bring recorded music as well. Do they have a wired or Bluetooth speaker in that situation, or do kids bring their own with them? Do they typically jump right into song/monologue or have a few questions first? Are there any pre-audition or audition tips or details, about the layout and process, that your kids wished they had known ahead of time?
Stupid question, do the auditioners like to shake hands? Do you hand paperwork and headshots to the auditioners or to the sign-in people?
Are there questions that the faculty might ask that she might be better prepared for? She will do some research to know about each school and program, and know the background of her monologues and song choices; any curve balls that she might watch out for?
Also, as she is staying at the Hampton Inn down the street, are there changerooms for switching between dance outfits and audition clothing, or do they just use a public washroom?
Just trying to cover the bases as an informed supportive Sherpa. Thanks
My D got into MMC! Very happy day!!! @CaliMTdreams It’s a BA in Theatre Arts with a concentration in theatre performance/MT. It ends up looking a lot like a bfa degree with their curriculum.
@CanaDad These are some things I remember about Chicago Unifieds from when my daughter attended 2 years ago.
Each school does have a sign in table. They will be in the hallways outside of the audition rooms. The students wait in the halls and it is crowded. They are pretty easy to find once you find the lay of the land. My daughter went for a walk in the evening to find everywhere she needed to be the next day ahead of time.
We made a manila folder for each school she was auditioning for with the time, place, requirements (bar cuts, monologue time, etc.) notes about the school or questions she would like to ask if there was an opportunity. It was nice to have a hard copy to look over and focus on while waiting to audition. She would just grab the folders she needed for the day to take with her.
When you get to the Palmer House Hilton, look for the Concierge table. They will have printed copies of schedules for what schools are there and their location. This is very helpful!
Give yourself extra time for elevator delays and use the stairs between floors if you can to avoid the elevator waits.
Bring sheet music that is clearly marked. Also bring a copy of recorded accompaniment and blue tooth speakers just in case. If the school does not have an accompanist, it will say. Mine brought these things mostly for walk ins. I honestly don't remember if she used the recordings.
-The Palmer House is large. When we arrived our room wasn't available yet and she had an audition scheduled. I remember her using a large restroom to the left of the Hotel Check in area to get ready for the audition.
After the first day, my daughter took off on her own and absolutely LOVED the experience! I hung around the hotel and was available if she needed something, but for the most part, she owned the process herself. I remember playing the Hamilton lottery hoping to win tickets for the evening shows while I killed time, lol.
We had an absolute blast and I will always remember our trip to Chicago Unifieds. Enjoy the experience!
