The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@MTdreamz Being from Maryland, if it weren’t for CC I would have never known Ohio was the center of the MT universe… seriously, my D has applied to 5 schools in Ohio and considering walkins for a couple more.

@afterp89 LOL that’s funny! My d only applied to 4 in Ohio (and 1 was a walk-in) she refused to apply to 3 more I suggested. By the way she ended up at Ball in Indiana! :))

Penn State prescreen decisions are expected on 1/7.

we already auditioned at BOCO!! just antsy to hear back. my D loved her audition there as well.

Thank you @CaMom13; @katzenbogen; @NYart15. I will post updates re. USC experience since it is all new and may be of interest to next year’s group too.
Wishing all of you so much success with upcoming auditions! The support and info shared here is truly helpful.

@SoCalPops A word of caution. What you say about taking a chance and not worrying about “annoying someone” or “wasting their time” is not sound advice. I understand that it seems like it’s not a big deal, and maybe they won’t remember one student in the mix. But they have the student’s headshot and resume on file after all. AND – these college faculty have been doing these audition events for years TOGETHER so they know each other and they talk to each other, they know coaches and even casting directors and other professionals in the business.
If a student applicant annoys one of them by blatantly disregarding the rules they’ve set up, then that student risks getting a bad rep among a whole community of auditioners and professionals. Remember, they have a HUGE pool of talent, most just as talented as the next, who are basically interchangeable in the eyes of the BFA faculty at these schools, so you don’t want to risk leaving a negative impression with even one of them, if you can help it.

Adding on to what @daughtersdreams wrote above
They also ARE professionals in the business. Every one of my son’s MT instructors are directors of summer stock and regional theaters such as The Muny, PCLO, Wichita, Walnut Street Theater, Goodspeed etc.

@artsmomof4 - Love your post and wish you success. My S and I tried some of the tactics you had mentioned. We visited 10 schools over the summer and ultimately decided to apply to only 4. He attended a summer workshop as well as a 2-day audition prep program in NYC. He has one acceptance, one rejection, and 2 final auditions this month. Even though the entire process is still stressful, I think initially shrinking the list down was the best decision we ever made. He’s actually been able to enjoy the process.

Hi everyone! My D and I just wanted to take a poll of what everyones top school is! We’re just nerds who find that kind of stuff interesting :)) Ours Is Baldwin Wallace!

Does anybody know if Royal Conservatoire of Scotland does walk in auditions at Chicago unifieds? D has some interest, but not enough to apply ahead of time (-:

@3Blessings Our turn around at Steinhardt was very quick - one week. Materials were submitted 12/13 and received a pass prescreen by email on 12/20. My son’s case may be different because he had already done a prescreen and was passed at NYU-Tisch. He decided to switch to Steinhardt and submitted a new prescreen to them. I’m not sure if the previous pass had any bearing on that. Best of luck!

It seems like the “debate” regarding whether to try to do a walk in audition at a school that rejected the applicant’s prescreen is suffering from disparate set of assumed facts. Yes- we all agree the hypothetical is unlikely (prescreen schools don’t generally accept walk ins), but let’s go with it.

The student loves school X, got her prescreen rejected, and now finds that they are accepting walk ins. The crucial fact that is not being discussed in this debate is whether the student discloses her prior rejection when requesting the walk in audition? If she discloses this information (perhaps explains that she’s changed her repertoire and this is her first choice school), etc, I think there is nothing wrong with making this request. If she fails to disclose her prior rejection-and in effect acts like she is a completely new candidate for their program- then I think she is demonstrating dishonest/unethical behavior. It’s not the attempt to re-audition that bothers me, it is the non-disclosure of relevant facts.

So everyone who is in favor of trying to get that audition - the question you need to answer is whether you are in favor of not disclosing the prior prescreen rejection facts when the candidate requests the walk in audition.

@MomofJ5 The prior prescreen will already be in their system when her name is entered, not to mention that the auditors may remember the student from the prescreen. So, you can’t assume it is only up to what the student chooses to disclose or not during the walk in.

@Mark80 unless one is a non audition program that your kid would be happy at, that is a risky proposal! Especially for a girl! LOL Glad it is working out for you but definitely would not suggest that method to anyone. My d refused to apply to a non audition program (or even a less competitive school) so just applying to her 4 favorite might have produced a GAP year or going into a program as a BA and re-auditioning the following year. Actually, now that I think about it, she did get into one of her top 4, but was rejected by 15 others so she got lucky (and she didn’t even end up choosing it in the end!)

Did anyones child apply to JMU for their BA in Musical Theatre and complete the slide room portion? My daughter is filling it out now and they ask for your portfolio… are they asking for your cut prescreen videos? Full videos of singing and dancing? They don’t require a prescreen so not sure what they’re looking to have her submit under portfolio… Thanks for any advice

If no one else responds @KatMT may be able to help you out @frisbee3 - she’s CC’s resident expert from JMU.

@MTMomma13 i suspect that some people might be reluctant to answer your question, only from being superstitious (like us ?) and not wanting to name their “top” choices, only to magnify the disappointment if rejected. I’m sure there’s a general sense about how competitive each program is, with increasing odds of rejection going up the tiers. BW is certainly in that top tier, and best of luck! I think my D’s top choice will be the one she gets into! and it will be a great bonus if she has more than one school to choose from.

@soozievt - I am not assuming that she’ll get away with it if she doesn’t disclose. My point is that the essence of what’s wrong with “going for it” is that not disclosing is essentially a dishonest act on her part. I am all for being a tenacious advocate for yourself, but being dishonest is crossing a line that is wrong - she might get caught and that will have long term negative consequences, but even if she isn’t caught, it can have bad consequences. I felt that the debate wasn’t focusing on that piece of it.

@KatMT - I was told you were the one to ask a JMU application question. My D is working on her slide room submission for her audition. She is at the portfolio portion. What are they looking for for this section? Cuts of performances from Musicals, Dance Competitions? Prescreen like cuts of acting, singing and dancing? Thank you for any advice. D couldn’t seem to find any requirements for this portion.

@frisbee3 there are no additional materials required to be uploaded for Musical Theatre applicants. We use the same slideroom for Musical Theatre, and Theatre (including Design Tech, Theatre Studies, Playwriting, etc… ) so the portfolio portion is more for those. However, applicants are welcome to upload an additional video if they would like. It is optional. Let me k ow of you have additional questions.
