The Class of 2025 -- Sharing, Venting, Discussing! MT

@OutOfMyMind21 Which state is imposing restrictions on visits?

@msraeder Congrats on the BFA Acting offer at Marymount!! Can you share how you scheduled an in person visit? Thanks!

Thank you! My D got an email that allowed us access to schedule one. They are not posting it publicly so you need to ask your kiddo to go back through emails and see if they received one (I’m sure they did but get so many that they probably overlooked it).

I would just tell everyone that emotions run high & nerves are raw right now, you can go look at my history around this time last year where there were a few " spats" I will say however , IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, one of the biggest value of CC is the reflective knowledge of the old timers…the class of 2025 just like the class of 2024 and all the classes before us are at their wits end around this time in the process, but we should ( again my opinion) value those who come back like @singoutlouise or @soozievt , our kids are in school, in some cases have graduated & they are only giving of their time and their input to pay it forward, as I hope each of you will for the class of 2026, but lets not shoo away the "old folks : :slight_smile: even if self proclaimed retired…if you read my final decision thread from last year, without those who came before me, I dont know if I would have made it through. Everyone here is in it for the kids, even when we dont always agree, ya know?

@MTMom26 final decision ?:slight_smile:

New Jersey is restricting visitors. Rider specifically states when you try to sign up that they are respecting the restrictions and you must be from NJ, NY, DE, PA or CT to visit in person.

I 100% agree with this assessment. My D was in the same boat (didn’t make into final 30, but got the email saying she was still in consideration at that time), I think that is great affirmation (and especially for you @theatremom1314 since your D was in the last 30) regarding the talent level of our kids! Fortunately for us, CMU wasn’t my D’s dream school; if it had been, I’m sure I’d feel differently. I do believe that each kid will end up where they’re supposed to be.

Hey folks,

I’ve been on CC for 19 years. There wasn’t even a MT Forum on CC in my early years here, but one very very long thread on the topic of MT colleges. I was instrumental in having a separate MT Forum created here, and it became one of, if not the, best online MT college resources. Things have changed in the last couple of years as the overall CC forum has made format changes and the participation level on the MT forum is way down. It is mostly people, ironically, participating on this one long thread, rather than separate threads for different related topics. And there are way fewer people participating. Many old timers have left with the format changes.

I, and others, have stayed on CC all this time and have given back to those who come after us. This forum would not be as good with all newbies. That may be a good support group, but it is new people leading other new people in the process. There is great value learning from those who went before you. There is also great value to hear from people who attend the programs you are applying to, or their kids do. Myself and MANY other have given back voluntarily to assist others on CC. My post count on CC (though it keeps getting recalibrated every time there is a format change on CC) is in the 5 figures. Now, I am reading posts by some parents of this year’s crop of students practically shooing away the old timers who have stayed on to help, and whose numbers have decreased dramatically, and was always part of what made the forum so informative.

I, for one, am glad that a parent from the UMich has shared some FACTS, not just opinions, since an anonymous blog style letter circulated on here. I have no horse in this race. My own kid was denied at two BFA programs, one being U of Michigan. Clearly, U of Michigan’s BFA in MT program has admitted a significant number of students of color in this year’s cohort, and in other years. In terms of 3 kids being admitted who work with a particular coaching team in southern CA, this is no different than in other years (likely this year too) when more than 3 kids have been admitted who work with particular MT coaching teams. I understand the appearance that gives off. I don’t think it is about that particular college coaching team at all (and for the record, I never heard of them until the posts here). The only way around the ā€œappearanceā€ this gives off is if the college program faculty would stop giving workshops to private coaching groups of clients, as well as privately held auditions for those clients across the board. In my view, that is on the faculty of all these programs (not just Michigan) and not really on the coaches. I’m a college counselor and I have zero contact with college admissions or faculty personnel on behalf of my students, which is how independent college counselors operate. This is not a University of Michigan issue. I posted examples in an earlier post on this thread of the number of students enrolling (doesn’t even add up all who were accepted) at particular colleges who all worked with one particular coaching team (I used two different coaching teams in my examples, both well known). U of Michigan was far from the only MT program who accepted multiple (more than 3) students from one coaching team. Just saying.

With regard to the head of the Michigan MT Program stepping down to being on faculty and not directing the program, these kinds of decisions are made WAY in advance to their being made public, and so it is very doubtful it has anything to do with a recent anonymous blog letter floating around.

I participate on CC less now than in the past, but continue to try to pay it forward. I am the parent of a student who had pretty successful MT admissions results, attended a well known BFA in MT program, and now has a pretty successful career in NYC In the MT world. Come to think of it, she taught at two BFA in MT programs soon after graduating college. Further, I have been an independent college counselor the past 18 years, including a specialty in MT college admissions. Please try not to shoo away those who have stayed on to try to help those much newer to this MT college process and all that comes next in their kids’ journeys. Believe me, we understand the stress this process brings and are happy to welcome you when you get to the other side of this process in a couple of weeks.

I think there’s a huge value in ā€œold timersā€ coming on here to offer empathy and encouragement during this process, sharing both their kids’ successes and failures. You’ve been very open about your daughter’s ups and downs, including her disappointing prescreen results. Thanks for that! However, there are others who are here to defend this obviously problematic process and certain programs, based on their own child’s success navigating this process…success that was achieved in a very different environment than we are experiencing in 2021. That’s not very helpful. And I don’t think you can defend ā€œif it makes you sleep better at nightā€ and other mean/condescending things that have been said in recent days. This forum is for the Class of 2025 and we can feel any way we want about our own uniquely challenging experience this year. We don’t need validation or permission from people who clearly don’t share OUR experience. Or have zero empathy. I would suggest that those wanting to promote certain programs could move to the ā€œacceptancesā€ forum and offer their advice to those who have been accepted to ā€œtheirā€ program.

The location of The New School was really, really nice. Everyone was friendly. It had a lot of opportunities student led productions and a very small feeling all around. It was an exciting option for my D, but financial aid just isn’t where it needs to be for us, unfortunately.

@BroadwayBanana My D is a sophomore Marymount MT. She lives with 2 acting BFA kids near the school. If your student would like to connect with current students I could arrange that .

This includes people who have been vaccinated. I talked to a counselor who said we were welcome to do their self-led tour around campus but that we could not sign up for a guided tour because we are coming in from Texas, even though we have been vaccinated. I understand, because NJ still asks for voluntary quarantine from anyone not in the immediate states, though it is not enforced. The state’s requirements haven’t changed, even though New York’s and others have. It’s OK. We’re still hoping to meet up with a current student and look around and enjoy the area.

@soozievt @NYYFanNowMTdad and @singoutlouise I wanted to thank you for continuing to come on here and pay it forward. I’ve read many posts by all three of you, and your breadth of knowledge and willingness to help is very appreciated. I’m really disappointed in how down the usership of CC has been this year. I’m glad that I had a couple years of reading all of your posts. If I just happened upon this site this year, I don’t think I would have been prepared to navigate this process. It’s also disappointing that so much air time is being given to an anonymous blog post put on here by a brand new user, who obviously just joined to spread the lies and stir the pot. This is a difficult time for a lot of parents and students right now, so I hope this thread can now turn the corner to helping those that need guidance!!

With NYU decisions just days away, @soozievt, your input will be invaluable for many!!
