Do you guys think Master League in Starcraft 2 counts for anything?
(Ethnicity: Korean)

I’m an anteater @ above poster

Aware of me of this “anteater”.

Our views on life differ, you have your goals, I have mine. Do not pleasure your self over getting better scores, grades and ect than me. That is where you and I are different, our world views are different. To me, you do not have the respect that you think I would have for you. Sorry, I see you merely as a victim to the system. But I praise you on your accomplishments. Good for you, now what matters now is what you do with it. Good luck to you sir and farewell.

Anteater reference http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/im-an-anteater</a> nsfw language, (obvious once you see the img)

Wait what I didn’t mean to offend you at all, I pray I didn’t come off like that. :frowning:
I mean… It’s a communal chance thread…
/GUILT_TRIP

Oh, it was all a big misunderstanding? I assumed it was some CC lingo. As you directly referred to me, I felt that the whole post was directed towards me.

@KTK: Master League in Starcraft you say? If you really are THAT good then you shouldn’t even worry about college and just play Starcraft competitively for the rest of your life. Bronze leaguer right here. haha.

Unless you’re winning money and an internationally ranked competitive SCII player-- please don’t even suggest to an Adcom that you spend your time like this. To gain that ranking you’re playing instead of sleeping, eating, and living your life. Everyone who is 13 - 24 plays video games- -big whoop.

CMU wants tomorrow’s well educated leaders-- they aren’t going to bring you in b/c you play so many hours of SCII that you’re proud of it as some of sort of accomplishment. With all due respect to gamers-- this is a no brainer for college admissions.

I’m sure you’ll get that advice throughout CC in any school forum.

While I’m waiting for results, I figure I’ll give this a go.

CIT - Mechanical Engineering

SAT: 760 CR, 800 M, 770 W

I disagree. I guess this is different for me because game design is my intended career field, but I put some of my ranked gaming achievements on my submitted resume. I also wrote my essays about gaming and how games are the literature of the future. So far I’m still here. :p

If a student is planning in doing CS or something related to games, why not put that you play them? If you’re planning to be a biologist, wouldn’t biology research be a good resume boost? If you want to be a writer, having written some fiction online is a good thing, too. It’s the same principle.

Not to mention - to the uneducated, sure, SCII looks like some cheesy game. However, to anyone who knows something about games (which I expect at least one adcom does,) they’d know that SCII is like digital chess on crack (with a time constraint.) It’s enormously complicated, extremely fast-paced and has a very sharp learning curve. It’s ten times more impressive IMO to be ranked in SCII than it is to be the chess master of your local high school,

A Georgia Tech admission officer told our tour group to most certainly put game rankings on the application. She shared a story about an applicant who had few ECs but was otherwise impressive. She called the student to get more information on why he seemed so uninvolved outside of school. She said he was reluctant to mention his gaming skills but she asked more detailed questions and was quite impressed at what he had achieved. She said because of that, he was admitted.

All starcraft comments aside… what are my chances at the moment?

Kate - not disagreeing-but cautioning.

As you know, I am a college admissions consultant. I can assure you in my conversations with many adcoms, Video game playing is not an extracurricular activity. Gaming is only noteworthy when accompanied by significant and widely recognized accomplishments-- tournament play and international ranking. Playing DDR at your local “raise money for our soccer team” contest and winning a $15 itunes gift card is not worthy of mention.
It’s all relative–and should only be noted if in a recognized noteworthy venue.

golden: looks like a good applicant but I don’t know what division you’re applying for; some are more competitive than others. Leadership slightly lacking but leadership is pretty overrated in most instances, you gotta like what you do - that’s key. The EC department is slightly lacking, I would say, but I don’t know where your interests lie.

And SC2’s “Master League” represents the top 2% of all players of SC II in North America, and this isn’t a small userbase either. I’d say it’s as good as you’re gonna get asides from Top200 or joining a pro team (most of whose members make up the top200)

I would generally agree with mom2012 on talking about video games. But if the accomplishments really merit it, and you’ve spent a decent amount of time… Go for it. I ended up not. Maybe if I were Top 200, sure. :P
