The Courtauld Institute of Art

What is the diffrence between The Courtauld and Oxbridge academically and which is better to apply to for an art history degree?

Thanks

From what I know (someone who did undergrad at Oxford and postgrad at the Courtauld), the Courtauld is THE place for Art History. If you want a career in the field, it’s the best place for networking, training etc. My contact’s MA course had a lot of Americans on it, fwiw.

If you’re just doing AH for the interest, and plan on some other career, Oxford gives you name recognition in the wider world.

But they’re both really tough to get into. Apply to both, see if either accepts you, and if you’re in the fortunate position of getting to choose between the two, you can agonise over it then, by which point you will hopefully have had a chance to see both places.

I agree with Conformist1688, apply to both and see if you get in before making a decision as to which is better.

There are four elite places to study History of Art in the UK, Oxford, Cambridge, the Courtauld and UCL. The University Glasgow has a really interesting HoA programme where you spend the first two years studying in London at Christie’s and then two years in Glasgow. I’m not an art historian so I can’t give a lot of detail as to which is best, but each will have a slightly different course structure so you should look at which one you prefer.
