The end of summer blues...

Anyone feeling a little sad because it is Labor Day? End of summer?

I live in the northeast and we are about to enter our probably most beautiful season. But it will be over by the middle to end of October. Then 5-6 months of blah scenery and cold, grey weather. A good snowstorm is beautiful and exciting. But they actually do not happen very frequently. Mostly grey sky’s and a dusting to an inch or two every night or so.

H and I have been dealing with this the last half dozen years by going somewhere warm in the middle of winter. Florida Keys, Cancun, Jamaica. Somewhere where it never gets cold!

Any of you feeling sad about summers end? How do you deal with winter?

Definitely! Cold weather seems appealing only because it will kill the mosquitos.

I am beginning to flip through HI real estate listings again… Not looking forward to November through March season.

Had the blues a couple weeks ago when we had to return to Asia to work. So hot and humid here. Dreaming of leaving here for good in a few more years and enjoying that northeastern fall, and yeah, winter. I guess it is a matter of perspective.

Yes, I’m feeling it. It wouldn’t be so bad if winter weather actually was just 3 months. But the leaves are all gone by the middle of November and do not really pop out again until the end of April…not flowering trees but big ones. i dislike the month of April. Most of the time it’s still cold.

I didn’t have the best summer (for multiple reasons), so I am ready to move on. What I will miss most is the longer days and being able to be out running/walking before work. To cope I am thinking of fitness alternatives to keep in shape during the upcoming months.

I absolutely LOVE the end of summer. No more hot, sticky weather. No more scrambling around at work to cover for people who are on vacation. And where I live, no snow for at least another three months. I think fall is the best time of year. (I live in the Washington, DC area, where fall seems to last three months and spring seems to last a week. I have no explanation for this.)

I was in K-Mart last night, and they were removing the outdoor furniture display and putting out the Halloween candy. Yay!

It takes a while to feel like fall in Atlanta, but I really will miss the long days and all the color. Everything is pretty drab here from november to march, and the sunshine looks like it’s coming through a glass of water.

The one thing I’m looking forward to about this winter is that I’ll be working in a ceramics studio, and those are ALWAYS warm because of the kilns :D. Last year I was in a dank basement with no windows all day and I lived in my down jacket, and was miserable. Can’t stand cold and dark.

The gray skies are so dull!

But looking forward to the end of mosquitoes and the beginning of pumpkin spice everything and fall leaves!

I really like fall and I love winter. We do a lot of snowboarding and I own a fat bike which is a mountain bike with huge tires that lets you ride in the snow. I used to live in Florida. Moving back to New England convinced me I needed to pick up some winter hobbies or I’d kill myself from the winter blues.

Now my least favorite season is spring. The weather stinks, it rains all the time, mud, bugs, humidity, pollen etc. Tons of yard work to do. I really hate spring. I like summer, but wish it was about 4 weeks long, and then go straight into fall.
The key to enjoying winter is to get outside. If you dress warm you can do all kinds of stuff. It’s really just mind over matter.

Not looking forward to it at all, but trying to enjoy the last, lingering days of sunshine. To me, the shorter days are the worst part. Leaving work in the dark seems so much worse than in the light.

I am OK with November and December as the holidays are fun. It is January and February that really seem to drag. By March, the days are getting longer and most years the snow is gone and there is the anticipation of spring and summer. I love to be out of doors, but never really invested in skiing as it was always so pricey and a bit of a hassle.

I guess it all depends on where you live. For us here in Southern California we love this time of year. Tourists are gone from the beaches and the weather is beautiful. We will have our paddleboards out most every weekend for the next 3 months enjoying the fall here.

Not at all. Fall, winter, and spring are the best seasons for being outdoors here. Summer is the season of $400+ electric bills!

Love the end of summer no more 90+ degrees with 80% humidity. I was imprisoned indoors most of July and August.

I live in New Orleans and soon the weather will be getting nice again. I have little tolerance left for winter but I remember it can be quite beautiful. Like @RightCoaster said, you need to embrace it and get outside. I think cities and suburbia look quite gray and depressing for 6 or more months but if you go out into nature it’s a different story. A walk in the woods after the leaves have all fallen can be so beautiful and filled with light that you can’t see at other times of the year. It’s not all gray, because you’ll have a brilliant blue sky, the warm gray of trees, a cool gold color of dried grasses or grains and this has it’s own special beauty, even without snow. It does last a long time - just like my hot and sticky summer.

That being said, I’ll stay here and keep my socks in the drawer where they belong, as long as I can!

I love the time between March and October. Love the bigger days where it is sunny till 8:30pm. I am sad that the pools are now closed though the temperatures are expected to be in the 90’s all week. I don’t like cold weather, shorter days of sunlight, icy and slippery conditions. That is when I wished I lived in a place like San Diego where the weather is nice year round. The warmer weather definitely makes me energized and puts me into a good mood. I am not a winter person at all in fact I don’t mind just skipping Jan and Feb and heading straight to spring. The idea of bundling up in layers of clothes and winter coats does not appeal to me. The worst is when I call my Southern CA sibling and she tells me she is in shorts and its 80 degrees while we are experiencing snow.

I wouldn’t mind autumn if it led back into spring, but nope, we won’t see warm weather again until the end of May in most years.

I don’t mind the change in seasons. Don’t like hot weather and I don’t like driving in snow so those things kind of cancel each other out. I’ll be sad to see baseball end for the season but my favorite activity starts up in September. I love having a fire in the fireplace on a cold winter night.

I’m with you OP! Definitely not ready for the change in seasons. I LOVE hanging out on my deck, drinking coffee/reading the paper in the mornings; eating dinner outside. Won’t be able to do that much longer even though the days remain warm…

I had my last outside swim yesterday, started swimming inside today. Other than that, there are no other changes in my day. The weather is about the same. I only get sad at the sight of the first snow, I hate to drive in a snow and I cannot go for a walk either, the snow brings a significant change, the Labor Day does not do it for me.
