The Grandparent Thread

If the Nuna is too expensive, my D has the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 and loves it. Very easy to use and navigate. Fairly light weight. She got hers used, and it’s now on the second of her babies, and holding up perfectly.

We bought Evenflo strollers (one for the parents, one for us): Strollers Collection | Evenflo® Official Site The one we have is the Pivot model. We bought Evenflo car seats as well. They’ve held up well and are easy to use.

It’s been a long time away from CC, but I’m back to share that S2 and DIL (our pandemic wedding couple) are expecting in June! They waited to tell us until the first trimester had passed and all genetic and chromosomal testing was complete. We are so excited that our other 2 grandchildren will have a cousin so close in age. DIL’s sister and brother are also expecting kids (their second) in the next 4 months so DIL’s mom & dad have a busy year ahead!

As for strollers, S1 and DIL used a City Mini for GS but sold it and got “the beast”, an UpaBaby double stroller, when GD was born last April. They’ve since moved from an apartment with an elevator to a house in Brooklyn with about 10 steep steps to the door, so they’ve moved to a scooter for 3yo GS and a Mountain Buggy stroller for the baby. They found they were locking the stroller to the railing (they own the house) because it was too heavy to manipulate with 2 kids.

Congrats!!!

Yeah!

My daughter and son in law are in the 20 day countdown. Why can’t I get the Pointer Sisters song “I’m so excited” out of my head?

Daughter has 6 weeks maternity leave but then I will be the full time caregiver (72 hours a week). We aren’t having any luck finding me an apartment in their area, so getting a bit stressed. I know things will work out, just wish it would hurry up!

Wow 72 hours a week!

I don’t think I could do 72 hours a week. Kudos to you. Are you moving to where they live, or getting a second apartment to be close part time?

I wouldn’t want to be the primary caregiver while my daughter works. I’m willing to do 2 or 3 days a week.

My daughter and son in law are both physicians, one in year 5 of a 7 year residency and the other in fellowship. So yes, the 72 hours a week.

I am moving to where they are, they are getting me an apartment plus a salary. I’m a good deal, in Boston they priced out daycare at $7,000 a month. Also, my daughter wants me to raise her son so she says, “you have to raise my son so he turns out as perfect as I am.” O f course, just in jest!?

Wow – 72 hours a week! You definitely will be raising him. It’s wonderful they can rely on you.

I love spending time with my granddaughter, but I am only good for a weekend. When I babysat her for 5 days while her parents were away, the babysitter came from 8-6.
We are going to Cancun next week. D1 is wondering if I could take the baby down for breakfast by myself so they could sleep in. I am a bit upset with lack of trust there.

D1 and SIL said not to buy any Christmas toys for the twins since they already have “way too many”. Plus they’re sure that various well-meaning relatives on his side of the family will send toys anyway.

So my gift to the twins was to establish 529 accounts for each of them. Not very exciting but eminently practical. (Or as D2 said, “They’ll thank when they turn 18.”)

But I couldn’t resist. I saw book this morning while I was browsing and just had to order it for under the tree: “How to Babysit a Grandma” by Jean Reagan. I got the board book version.

The book sounds adorable. I can’t wait to buy books. This afternoon I’m going to a local, baby shop with my daughter to look around and get ideas for her registry. My daughter and son in law went last weekend and bought a Nuna car seat and the Uppababy vista stroller. Many car seats are back ordered and the stroller prices are scheduled to rise in the new year.

We found an apartment for me that is about 1 mile, 15 minute walk from daughter and SILs apartment. I could definitely use the exercise walking but it’s good to know there is a bus available for heavy rain or snow.

It is an apartment share with just one other female in her 50’s who is a concert cellist. Seems like a good fit for the two of us.

Daughter has 14 days to go and is hanging in there, but a residents schedule is grueling, pregnant or not.

We set up a 529 for our granddaughter for the same reason - parents don’t want an over abundance of “stuff,” and she’s only a year old so won’t feel slighted.

I gift kids money (write a check for kiddo or my relative, so either can deposit. I don’t specifically do a 529 or Roth IRA, since the kids are nieces and nephews (or greats). I try to also give something small the kid can touch and enjoy. The book would definitely fit that category.

My GD has that book. It’s charming!!

And Yeah, I’m the 529 grandma. I just give a couple of gifts for b’day and Christmas. The main one is the deposit into the 529.
