I think you have a good chance of getting excused or postponed , since you are a main caregiver for your grandchild. Especially, if it would be a hardship and/or cost prohibitive for the parents to have to make other arrangements. Good luck!
Thanks for asking, @hrh19. She’s been on antibiotics for a couple days and feeling much better. Still maybe a little less energetic than usual, but almost there. I took her out for a couple hours today to the park, so her mom could get some WFH done while little brother napped. Unfortunately, brother (1) seems to have it now, too, so he’s also not feeling well. Thank goodness for antibiotics, though. GD should be able to go to school tomorrow.
Twin B had a terrible experience on Sunday that ruined an otherwise really good day.
After mom got home from works, we took the twins out to a local ice cream parlor where they got their OWN cup of “chocolate cream” to feed themselves.
(Huge mess! But they enjoyed themselves. Grandma had to go into Starbucks and buy an overpriced bottle of mineral water so we could wipe off enough sticky to put them back into the car…)
When they got home, mom & dad took them swimming in the backyard pool, which they absolutely love. While sitting on the edge of a pool, Twin B got stung on the lip by a bee. Poor little thing!
Mom (who is an ER doc) took her inside, removed the stinger and poison sac, and held her to comfort her. I was tasked to go buy some Pediatric Benadryl. (Had to stop at 3 stores to find some. I don’t why I even bother looking at CVS for anything. Whatever I need, they’re always out of…)
Poor baby had angioedema over her entire right side of her face, but luckily it didn’t extend to her airway. Mom says that because she had a rather strong reaction for a first exposure, we need to keep a close eye on her for more severe allergic reactions in the future. Mom said she might write a 'script for an epipen to keep on hand “just in case”.
That’s really scary. My SIL had never been stung by a bee, and it finally happened a couple years ago. He had difficulty breathing & D rushed him to the nearby urgent care. He has an epipen now, but he is scared of being stung again. The first thing he did was get a lawn service! I hope GD isn’t allergic, and if she is … I hope I’m not the one watching her when she gets stung the first time.
Benedryl is your first line of defense for allergic reactions. Since her dad has serious allergies, it may be a good idea to have some on hand for GD.
@WayOutWestMom ~ Scary! I’m glad it turned out okay.
I think someone mentioned ‘Tonies’ on this thread. GD has one and really likes it. The box itself is $100, but today it is on View Your Deal for 50% off. I am not familiar with the actual bundles of Tonies offered there, but the box itself is a great deal.

@hrh19 Thanks for that link. We are at the beach with our kids and grandkids and were just talking about how my son’s daughter needed a box. My daughter’s daughter already has one with several add ons, but she ordered the Gruffalo bundle as GD loves the book; son ordered the box.
THANKS! Bought one for GD. Wasn’t familiar with them before.
Since we are recommending toys. I bought this for GD when she came to visit me. She loves to put one on top of another. She then figured it out that you could actually blow into it and make noise (music). They are good for travel.

One feature of the Tonies is a create your own; you can record a song, story, or just talk and record. My daughter’s in-laws have done this for my GD; I have not done so yet as we FT almost daily.
My youngest GD has had hers for about a year, and it has been worth the money. I hope my other GD enjoys hers as much.
Yay, FDA approved vaccine for little kids!!
I don’t know if your SIL would qualify, but there is immunotherapy for bee sting allergies.
I got a random call from the CDC Center for Immunizations last asking me to participate in a survey. Since I live in a household with children between the age of 1 and 4, I was eligible for the study. However, once they learned the my grandchildren are twin girls who had participated in the Moderna clinical trial for covid vaccines AND their mother is a physician, they really, really wanted to talk with my D because she’s source of some very good data. D was putting the twins to bed when the call came in but they’re calling back today at a specific time to interview her.
And now that the Moderna vaccine for young children has been approved, the clinical trial results get unblinded and we’ll know if both, one or none of the twins got the actual vaccine and at what dose. Whether they got a real vaccination or not, both twin caught the covid omicron variant in January. This was confirmed by PCR. Both twins were sick, one moreso than the other, but neither required hospitalizations (which is how the CDC defines seriously ill).
Speaking of toys, certain 4 and 2 year olds LOVE this bouncy horse I got for them. We will keep it at our place (per mom’s request ), and today we had to order a companion for the horse so the little ones would not fight over it.

D has appointments for 3 and 1 to get vaccinations! So thankful we are finally there!
My brother texted me yesterday to tell me they got an appointment for my youngest nephew (who’s 2) to get vaccinated this week. He and my SIL are so excited that all 3 of their kids (older ones are 5 and 6) will all be vaccinated.
I just ordered one. I am going to bring it to Italy in 2 weeks when we travel. It’s inflatable, so it should pack well.
D1 left with GD for a month to go to Europe. I am not certain what’s her plan about vaccinating GD. It would be helpful if people could post their grandkid’s reactions to the vaccine here.
Well, that was fun! Went downtown to do some errands, ran into D with stroller full of two just vaxxed small people. They were smiling so far; GD3 was pretty proud of getting her “pinch” and GS1 seemed ready for a nap but otherwise fine. @oldfort --if I hear of any reactions I’ll report back. I’m just so glad they finally got this protection. As I was sitting on a bench chatting with them, one of GD’s friends came by on her way to getting shot. D says all her friends are making appointments for their littles as fast as they can get them.
My S and D are getting their daughters vaccinated this weekend. Son’s 3.5 yo is getting Pfizer, while daughter’s to turn 3 year old tomorrow, will be getting Moderna. My daughter’s pediatrician is reserving vaccines for the under 3 crowd, so GD will miss out, but has an appointment at the pharmacy.
