The Grandparent Thread

Just finished an order from HA. Not sure if I should be thankful for reading about the sale here or mad at you folks…

I texted my daughter to tell her about the sale and told her to hurry up, CC grandparents were on a buying spree!

Congratulations @WayOutWestMom
I love HA. I’m not looking since I think my grandson has plenty of clothes. My other daughter is due in December but she has been gifted so many hand me downs that look brand new that I’m trying to not go crazy.

Obviously turned into “Best Buy of the Day” thread.

Congratulations!

@WayOutWestMom congratulations!

We are totally obsessed with Free Birdees pjs. My daughter loves the joggers that match them for her and we are all getting matching Christmas pjs from them! Even my son and his financee found a set (with bandanas for their cat and dog) they wanted! They are bamboo and the best quality we have found! Gs even has the bamboo sheets and pillowcases and blankets that match or coordinate (they make solids too). We do have Monsters Inc Hannah Anderson though!

Gs is back from his dad’s and started day care today. He is very clingy right now though. He ran to his mom and never looked back. He still won’t talk to the judge to fix the communication issues. They have been separated for a year (never married) but really only lived together for a year. She was here the first six months. He has never been interested at all and never calls to talk to the baby when it isn’t his time to have him. At least we are to every other weekend from now til Christmas.

I think as time goes on, GS will be able to verbalize his wishes to the judge. Very helpful DD was never married to her son’s father - judges ‘see’ that the situation was not truly a ‘family situation’ from the get-go, and one or neither parent wanted marriage based on the situation not working out. Sure the dad will get visitation rights - and hopefully there will be some kind of ‘normal’ w/o a negative impact on GS. Hopefully the dad will make efforts to have his son be his first concern when his son is physically under his roof.

You and your DD are absolutely right to be very concerned and protective of GS. 0 - 5 is such a critical developmental time for children, and your efforts to help him do well will have GS do well.

I couldn’t resist the peer pressure. I have 2 grandchildren. I got them each a pair of pajamas and also matching Christmas pajamas. I manage to muster some willpower before I looked at the rest of the site.

Speaking of holiday gifts, I always keep an eye on Nordstrom. Their Mini Boden line of kids’ clothes is well made and cute. Since I was in the gift shopping mode, I got this for the oldest of our science nerd kids:

Peek (Aren’t You Curious) clothing has some great science (and history) nerd shirts for toddlers and children.

We have bunches (because mommy and daddy are both science nerds and the shirts a pretty gender neutral) bought on sale at Nordstrom Rack.

I knew it was going to happen sooner or later–

Tonight after the twins had been put to bed, D1 heard the Alexa in their room, playing Rockabye Baby over and over. She had told Alexa to play it once when she told them goodnight. (It’s part of their bedtime ritual.) But not over and over. She though maybe she had accidentally set it on repeat, but nope…she stood quietly outside their bedroom and when the song ended, she heard Twin A say very clearly, “Alexa, play Rockabye Baby.”

Gonna have to look up how to childproof the Alexa. Otherwise Twin B (who is the more clever of the two) is gonna be ordering stuff off Amazon any day now.

I think that is why D did not attach her credit card to Alexa.

GD likes to look at pictures on my iPad with me. She knows how to swipe left and right. Her parents do not appreciate it.

That’s so familiar. We put some Sandra Boynton and Dr. Seuss books on an old iPad for GD, and later added a bunch of photos. While she likes the animated stories, she was totally delighted to see the pictures of herself with us and couldn’t wait to show mommy. Her parents won’t allow her to have an iPad at home. So much for my Xmas present plans.

My GD (20 months) loves the scratch and sniff books–she’s got all the Pat the Bunny books and my D recently bought Daniel’s Apple Picking Adventure and Daniel’s Sweet Trip to the Bakery. (It’s Daniel from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.) D sent me videos of GD reading them–she jumps up and claps each time she smells something!! It’s so much fun to watch.

My GD lives 800 miles away and I think it’s so great that I can see what she’s doing just by picking up my i-phone. D and SIL send us photos/movies via text message almost every day. We also Face Time with GD every day or so. This technology is so much better than talking on a landline phone. I remember trying to get my kids to chat on the phone with my parents when they were toddlers–it wasn’t very satisfying. (My kids are now in their 30s.)

GD starts daycare Monday (3x/week). They had an early-start 2 hour trial day today for the kids who were new to the daycare. GD cried when her dad left, but they sent pictures of her playing in the “calming area.” She was okay during her time there, but she was pretty quiet. It was the first time she had ever been left with anyone but her grandparents, so it must have been pretty confusing for her. She’s just 20 months, so she doesn’t really understand yet. We all know she’ll get used to going to daycare every other day, but that it will be a process of adjustment.

DGS almost 3, started morning preschool a few weeks ago. So far he has been out sick twice, and missed more days than he has attended, but he loves this school, as do his parents. These poor Covid-era kids have not been exposed to the normal range of colds and viruses. I figure he will be out sick quite a bit, as will the other Covid-era kids in his class. Baby sister has already had several mild illnesses, caught from big brother. She is still nursing, and perhaps that is helping protect her from more serious illness.

Living in the south, it is not as uncommon for head lice as it is in the north (DH and I grew up in WI; GKids in AL). We raised DDs in AL and avoided head lice. DD told me her 4 YO and 3 YO both got lice - spread at daycare. No reflection on excellent daycare (they get hot breakfast and hot lunch; long established church daycare). Once it is seen, everyone gets head checks. This was first time for them (GD has been at this daycare for 4 years). 1 YO spared.

DD/mom in her nursing training (they went to homeless shelter for some of their community based care) witnessed not only head lice but also bed bugs (bites on her patients) - she would immediately strip her clothes on entering her apartment - get her clothes in the washer, and take a hot shower. Had to keep from anything coming in. Made sure to inspect and clean her shoes.
