The Grandparent Thread

Congratulations! Even though she isn’t feeling well today, 2 year old GD was the most delightful part of our day. Happy holidays to all us lucky grandparents!

Congratulations, @mom60! Yes, best gift ever! Enjoy every minute of your snuggling!

Agreeing with you, @kelsmom. Our dear grandchildren were the very best part of the weekend. They were so excited about everything! We had a lovely Christmas Eve with our little family, H, S, D, SIL, GD, and GS. D and family spent Christmas morning alone and then we joined them for brunch, presents, and lots of playtime.

Happy Holidays!

Santa brought Nashville GD (2 & 1/2) a mini Target cart and wooden cash register. She spent the day having me, her mom & dad check her out and then filling her cart again with the items she bought to take to her car. She evidently loves to help swipe/insert the credit card when they go for real. The wooden cash register set up came with a pretend credit card and pretend coins & bills. Hope the credit card isn’t lost by next week, but she’s a little obsessive about organizing her toys, so it stands a good chance of not being lost too soon.

We got a play kitchen for GD. She is battling a bad cold and (another) double ear infection, so she was feeling under the weather yesterday … but she really perked up when she saw the kitchen. She made lots of soup, and she pretended to drink from the faucet (the dog drinks from the tub faucet …). It was pretty cute!

My granddaughters LOVED the Target cart. With all the chaos they haven’t tried the TonieBox yet.

If you stay in a hotel that uses plastic entry cards for the room–the kind changed for each guest–save them for her. They make great pretend credit cards. Sometimes you get offers in the mail and there will be a fake credit card with “your name here” on it. Those also make good pretend credit cards.

My DIL is at her parents for Christmas with her sisters; my son goes today as the Jewish doctor always gets call on Christmas! My GD took her Tonie box with her, and she received a few more toppers. Her cousin was getting a Tonie box as a gift, as well as many toppers. DIL sent a picture of the 2 girls with their boxes sitting side by side; one playing music, the other a story! I think the adults grew tired of listening to 2 playing at once; the little girls could care less!

Great ideas, @jonri ! GD got a new topper for her Tonie box in her stocking. D commented that it was 30 minutes of peace if GD would leave it on the box.

No Tonie boxes here! But Twin A did get a skateboard (plus knee and elbow pads. She already has a helmet she wears when she rides her scooter or balance bike).

D2 and her husband made it here safely on Friday, although their flight arrived an hour late. They’re scheduled to return home later today (departure scheduled for 6pm). When D2 checked in online last night, the airlines were offering a$500 gift card each if they would rebook to later in the week flight. D2 can’t because she’s a doctor and has to work tomorrow, but her husband has off all week. He said if/when the airline offers $1000 for his seat, he’ll take it, but otherwise plans to accompany his wife home. The two of them will be flying to Indiana on Friday to visit his parents over the New Years’ weekend.

Christmas was great–until it wasn’t. Too many gifts led to two toddler meltdowns because they were overstimulated/overwhelmed. Mom finally declared a moratorium on opening new presents and put 4 or 5 away until the next holiday. (Valentine’s Day?) Dad is going to limit relatives to only 1 gift per child next year.

The twins will be sorting through their toy boxes later in the week to select toys to donate to the local children and women’s shelter.

I have vivid memories of S’s Christmas Day meltdown almost 30 years ago. I am very conscious of making sure not to overstimulate GD as a result!

We gave our very active GD a mini trampoline. She hasn’t stopped bouncing since she got it.

FYI - if you are looking for a special outfit for your grandkids therealreal.com is a good source. It’s a designer resale site. I just bought few Bonpoint, Petit Bateau dresses for GD for $30-$40. They are in very good condition because most kids only wear those clothes once or twice and are usually few hundred $ if new.

I have one GD that gets sick every time the family travels or tries to travel, yet she is the one family member that has avoided Covid so far! When they were here for Thanksgiving, she had a horrible ear infection and the flu. Now in the UK for the holidays to visit SIL’s family and friends where she ended up having breathing difficulties and was in the ER for half a day. Feeling better now, but missed out on part of their plans; she wanted to see the sites that she knows from Peppa Pig! While she hasn’t been diagnosed with asthma yet, it is a possibility; kids with food allergies and eczema like she has, or more likely to have asthma. She always ends up wheezing when sick and has an inhaler.

Daughter mentioned they were going to register her in the UK so that healthcare will be easier; not sure if that means they will go ahead with a UK passport. She is eligible for dual citizenship, but they just hadn’t bother to applied as there really wasn’t a reason to do so.

If I had the opportunity for dual citizenship somewhere, I’d be all over it like white on rice.

@snowball , :hugs: :hugs: :hugs: Hope she is well from here on and that the RSV vaccine materializes by next winter so she doesn’t face a repeat episode.

Both my grandsons (from same parents) have eczema - no family history of that. Son In Law cannot easily digest cow’s milk (goat milk is fine) - has to do with a specific protein issue/genetic (a few relatives have this issue) - neither grandson has an issue with cow’s milk. I wonder if there is anything in the future with other medical things for grandsons…

I have not heard about the RSV vaccine (which DH and I will be happy to take as we both have had bad upper respiratory issues recently - I was on 8 days of bedrest, and got 2 shots, a breathing treatment, and other medications to help get over this – which I still have some daily coughing and body aches 21 days after onset). Currently they are testing on animals and may have available next fall a flu shot which covers all 20 variants (current flu shots are with 4 most expected variants).
