The Grandparent Thread

Our 3 YO GS2 was in love with various girl stuff when we visited with family over Thanksgiving. He was enamored with some girl bracelets. All in play being sparkly or novel or mimicking what he would see the older kids wear (not even thinking it was a girl thing). He loves boy stuff, like Batman and boy clothing – he has Batman like his brother (one has all black attire, and one has some gray attire, so we know which one belongs to each boy). He is all boy.

Dad with one son certainly is wanting his son to be ‘all boy’ - and that will come. With twin sisters, your grandson has the sisters’ influence, seeing what they ‘like’.

Yea, our S wanted nail polish, so we all put on clear nail polish. After awhile none of us liked it because “it stinks” when you put it on and take it off.

Both kids (S&D) loved stuffed animals, capes, swords, and building things. Neither liked pink but D loved velvet and lace dresses and would climb trees and play sports with them (with shorts, of course).

My boys (grown and apparently straight and cis now) all loved bright colors, pink/purple, and sparkly things. Inherently, I think they’re nicer to look at than all the gray/black/camouflage(!) that is sold for little boys. (On the subject of our Culture of Patriarchal Oppression, did you read the thing about how even dinosaur clothes for infants are often marketed as the carnivores for boys and the herbivores for girls??)

My DS20 famously had a Barbie lunchbox and was excited to bring it the first day of Kindergarten, which was in a liberal private school. In line to enter his classroom, some other kid in the class jeered at him, and my son calmly turned to the teacher and said, “I was under the impression that sexism was not permitted in this school?”

In preschool, S sat in dinosaur corner and had the carnivores kill each other off and happily played with the herbivores and omnivores. He’s happily an omnivore himself. haha! The teacher said she never saw anything like it. She called him one of the 2 kids who were 3 going on 40. She was impressed he knew all the dinosaurs by name and the times each lived.

Speaking of color… I’m a new grandparent to be (expecting in a couple of weeks), and I’ve noticed all the baby stuff is in muted colors or neutrals with lots of brown, white, and ivory. Zipped lips here, but what a difference from the bright primary colors our kids had.

Young people today favor those colors in their homes, and they extend their decorating sensibilities to their children’s rooms. It’s just the changing tastes.

Lots of the organic baby clothing is neutral colors. Hanna Andersson has colorful outfits for kids.

I buys GD1 a lot of clothes. I tend to buy her more dresses and sweaters. D1 seems to like them because I see GD1 wear them going to school. I like pastel colors for GD1 because she is rather pale.

I try to buy things in bright colors that are gender neutral—green, red, orange, blue, purple. I avoid pink because D has long hated it and I know folks love or hate it.

Rough day in grandparent world today. One was in the hospital and one got injured in a rollerskating accident with her mom. Lost some teeth (one is a front permanent one).

I hope that the one in the hospital is okay.

As for the tooth - poor kid! I hope that it was a clean knock out, at least, rather than a break off with root remaining.

Nope, unfortunately it was the latter. Broke off the tooth diagonally and exposed the root, which is being treated with antibiotics. Why did you say that? I suspect she’s looking at a root canal and a crown. But they are wondering if they might be able to bond the tooth. I’m not sure if the tooth is sitting in a glass of milk or not. They go back tomorrow.

My S’s friend broke a tooth skateboarding when they were young. He broke off his tooth in such a way that he had to have a root canal. I can’t remember details because it’s been so many years. I just remember his mom really concerned when he needed a root canal. That may have been due to the expense, though. I kind of think that they were able to bond his tooth, but I am not sure.

My niece ran into a glass sliding door and broke teeth when she was on a family vacation—not sure his old she was. She had to have one or more root canals. So sorry for all the gkids—hope all are better ASAP!

It’s been a challenge to bite my tongue, but I did it!
The sibs have been informed, via photo, in our family chat thread.
Grandson was sitting in his Big Bro t-shirt holding some sonogram images.
It’s gonna be a long wait to Labor Day for this new little one.

Oh dear! I am sorry to hear of the tooth and hospital troubles! My DS fell at preschool on his second birthday and jammed both front teeth up into his gums. It was a rough time, and he had to give up the pacifier, one of them abscessed and had to be pulled, and they damaged his permanent front teeth. Not fun at all. I hope the little ones heal well and quickly!

I’m so sorry… hugs to all.

Happy announcement.

D2 is expecting her first child in August. She just had her first trimester US and everything looks good. They’re anxiously awaiting genetic testing results right now. So cross fingers everything goes well on that front. :crossed_fingers:

I’m very happy for her. She had a miscarriage w/ complications in August. She is also a breast cancer survivor. (Double mastectomy, chemo, long term hormone suppression) So this baby is especially precious.

Congratulations @WayOutWestMom and @bhs1978 :tada::tada:. I hope everything goes as smoothly as possible in the next months and look forward to hearing updates.

I’m also excited to join this thread, D2 is expecting a baby in August too. Though I hadn’t completely given up hope I didn’t think this (grandparenthood) was going to happen for us so it’s lovely news.
