The Grandparent Thread

Well, first there were the adorable plushy lambs, then the little water games to use quietly during the seders, then the sticker books, then some puzzles…

I’ve never thought of Passover as a gift giving holiday and never heard of anyone shifting it from Chanukah. It sounds like these gifts were just seder-related items to keep the kids entertained.

I guess we run in different circles, because it’s huge for us!

ETA: also for adults, with book exchange etc.

We didn’t do gifts for our kids for Passover but at the Seder each kid had a wrapped afikomen prize. It was always a nice hardcover book. The hosts always took great care in choosing something special for each kid. One highlight of my kids growing up was the Passover play. My husband’s aunt and her teenage boys would gather all the younger kids and they would write a simple play, raid the closets for costumes. They would perform the play during the Seder. I can’t wait to continue that tradition when my grandchildren are ready.

A Friday/Saturday of GS fun. We did our usual Friday routine of DW and I picking him up from daycare and then having dinner at his house. We planned to come over today and he said “come to my house, tomorrow and eat eggs, OK.”

D2 is visiting for the weekend so we went over for breakfast and had scrambled eggs that he helped stir. We had a blast playing all day with D2 getting some quality aunt time. When he went to bed, he said “thanks for coming to my house today.” it was very adorable

Children’s requests are so special. When our older DD was between age 7 - 9, she asked grandma and grandpa (DH’s parents) to come to visit us for her birthday. The retired grandparents came with two of grandma’s older sisters, driving 850 miles with overnight stay on the way (the two widowed sisters were good for having a ‘road trip’ and the family activity). I was a SAHM, and we had two extra bedrooms with queen sized beds, each with their own full bath, so the home accommodations worked out. Before they left us (mid-morning), I arranged for our priest (who was in his 70’s but younger than the grandparents/aunts) to meet us at Cracker Barrel (DDs were at school and DH was at work) and they all enjoyed that time - our priest said he enjoyed being with people that were his peers that also were active - they could share stories from the past and good family times.

The one widowed aunt had made a cloth baby blanket along with grandma for each of DDs when they were babies - larger size for multiple uses. I imagine they did each during a visit together. Grandma was the youngest of 7 sisters, and she had 5 brothers (one brother younger than her). Very close to her siblings.

I called DD1 yesterday to check in on the boys’ clothing needs (I help DD1 with the dressy clothes - good slacks, good shorts, good shirts for church) - Kohl’s has 30% off until April 4. The boys are currently age 6 and 4 (birthdays in July and Aug); I outfitted them well last year, but the older one might be going up a size with pants/shorts. The older granddaughter might also have some needs, IDK. I told DD1 I can get whatever the kids need for clothes. She takes care of all the school uniform needs and shoes. DD1 manages to organize the clothes pretty well - she just doesn’t have much time to really shop for clothes outside of online (works FT and 5 children ages 1 - 7), and she doesn’t have Kohl’s shopping card like me. I have also gotten all the kids’ swim needs through Lands End, coordinating with DD1.

D1 and D2’s families went down to Disney this past week. They are on their way back now.
D1 worked with a coordinator to plan all of their activities - tickets, fast lanes, eating with characters and when were the optimal time for all events.
They looked like they had a great time, especially GD1. They took a video of riding the tea cups. Even GD2 was laughing.
As far as traveling, both of their flights out of LGA were cancelled, but they had backup flights out of JFK. As far as security, they said lines were very short. This morning they had 5 people in front of them at the Orlando airport. D1 is annoyed that they spooked everyone to get to the airport so early.

DD2’s BD was March 20th, and she traveled from her home in Orlando to DC with a friend for a long weekend March 19 evening flight and back Monday or Tuesday evening. She got through TSA easily both ways, but allowed for a little more time in DC.

No need to be annoyed being a little early, although when traveling with children, one doesn’t want to add travel time when not necessary to avoid meltdowns. One doesn’t want to miss flights due to not allowing enough time.

This DD is the family expert on Disney World, having lived in Orlando since Summer 2021, and an annual passholder. Last year she even had pictures to re-enact some of the scenes from her first time there as a 7 year-old. Poised with Pluto again. It doesn’t get old for her.

My GD called on FaceTime yesterday. She told me about her music lessons and that she was singing. I asked her to sing and she started to sing me a song. She stopped part way; I said, “don’t stop singing.” Her response—”you have to subscribe if you want more.” DD and I cracked up.

Just checking in here. Love it when I get a message from DS#2 and/or DIL that the 4 yo wants to do a facetime (well we use an app that lets us read/play games/color, etc while talking and seeing each other in real time). But when we read bedtime stories with him (he can read so we take turns reading the pages which he then turns on the screen) we get tired and are ready for bed!! Seems like it’s our bedtime story!! In fairness, they are on the W coast so it’s 3 hrs later here when we are reading bedtime stories.

This long weekend is when GD2 is going to get potty trained. She is 18 months. D1 asked me to take GD1 for the weekend. We are going to the Central Park zoo, Aladdin Broadway show, and going to D2’s place for lunch. I also ordered Easter eggs decorating kit. My mom asked me why I had so many things planned. I said if I didn’t she would expect me to play with her the whole time. There is no down time for GD1. To be fair, I am looking forward to those activities too.

Luckily, they got 17 inches of snow in the last two days after there being virtually no snow at the mountain this spring break. Wish I was there with them.

Soon to be 3 years old Little Miss Mess with her mom stopped by our place yesterday. I was impressed how LMM handed her noodles! She even knows how to eat spaghetti properly with a fork! Not much fell to the floor this time! As they were leaving, I said something like, “Oh let’s put the boots on this Bebe!” To which LMM quickly replied, “No Bebe! I’m a big girl!”
:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

My GDs (5 & 6) were on spring break this week so I went down to entertain them for a couple days. Monday it was warm so we went to a fun park with a splash pad. Tuesday we went to a county park with several playgrounds, some trails, a butterfly garden and a rope bridge. We had a lot of fun. Today is my regular gig of watching my 1.5 yo grandson. He was playing in the backyard having a grand time with the garden hose when he got stung by a bee. He only cried for a little bit. I got the stinger out with a credit card and washed it with soap and water. I tried to ice it but he wouldn’t cooperate. It is a tiny bit red but otherwise he seems fine.

GD1 is staying with me this weekend. This morning when I was doing some online shopping, she came over to ask me if I could get her few dresses. I asked her what kind. She said she wanted black dresses. She picked out some fairly sophisticated dresses. I ordered them. She is definitely an nyc girl.
We went to see Aladdin today. I thought it would be too long for her, but she really enjoyed it.
