My grandson starting to crawl yesterday at just over 5 months. DH asked them if they were in good enough shape to keep up. D is a marathon runner and son in law is a swimmer and skier, I think they can if anyone can! ![]()
At 5 mos? Wow
That youngster looks like he’s ready to take on the world with his helmet. Haha! Very stylish!
He looks really strong!
GD had an art piece chosen, by her art teacher, for the school district’s ‘Art Show’. This is being held at the public library. There was a reception for the children and their families. It was lovely and she was so proud! It isn’t always easy following her big brother who is a talented student and athlete. Way to go, GD!
Looking forward to Easter brunch with D, SIL, GS, and GD. ![]()
Expecting our first grandchild in late June – when did you first get to hold your grands?
D1 and SIL were living here in town when our GD was born 6 months ago. The hospital she was born at is less than 2 miles from our house. I told the story here before that I took my SIL a sandwich for lunch while D1 was in labor. As I was walking into the hospital SIL was texting me saying D1 was fully dilated and ready to push. When I walked into the labor/delivery room to leave the sandwich D1 asked me to stay. I saw GD’s birth, but left soon after to give D1 and SIL time with her. H, D2 and I returned later in the day with dinner and we all got to hold GD then.
My GD was born during Covid. We weren’t out gallivanting around in the wild, so we got to hold her the day she came home from the hospital (which was the day after she was born).
Both of my grands were born in a hospital about a mile from my house. GD spent 6 days in NICU so I didn’t get to meet/hold her until she was released. When GS was born, GD and I were able to visit the next day (I was taking care of her).
Just wanted to add that the first couple of months GD was at home D1 and SIL really limited contact with people. They of course let H and I and D2 see her as much as we wanted as well as SIL’s parents who came from CT to meet her when she was 3 weeks old. My brother and SIL brought my mom to meet the baby when she was a few weeks old. Mom lives 100 miles away. D1 and SIL asked my younger brother with young kids to wait to meet GD until she had her first vaccinations.
3 weeks. That’s when my dil felt comfortable having us come
I met our first grandchild at three weeks and our second at maybe four weeks or so.
I got to see, but not hold, 1st GC in the NICU hours after he was born. Met and held, masked, 2nd GC the evening she was born.
Met and held 3rd GC the day he was born; and the 4th GC, the day after he was born.
For #s 1, 2, and 4, I was asked to be in town to help (I’m a pediatric nurse). DD and SIL were living in my town when #3 was born.
My niece had us come over and hold her babies one or two weeks after they were born. She says we are her favorite aunt & uncle. ![]()
I got to hold my niece’s oldest in the hospital, the day he was born. (It’s ironic, though, because he has health issues that have caused his parents to very strictly limit who gets to interact with him. I didn’t make the cut, and I haven’t seen him in more than six years.)
My nephew and wife are having a baby the first week of July. Her sister is getting married Aug 1 and his sister is getting married on Aug 27. I think that baby will meet a ton of people before 7 weeks old.
I was in the room when my daughter’s sons were born so I got to hold them the day they were born. For the older son (almost 4) they had Covid rules of one visitor a day so I saw him when he was born and the other grandma saw him the next day. For my son’s kids, we were in the waiting room with the other grandparents when the oldest (almost 7) were born and we were able to hold her that day. My son’s second and third were born during Covid restrictions so we saw them when they got home. The now 5 year old was several days old because she spent a few days in the NICU and the 3 year old came home the next day.
For my middle sister, it was 18 mo. Niece and her H were stationed overseas and it was the beginning of Covid. H was in Germany the very end of Feb 2020 and traveled from Frankfurt several hundred miles to visit them and see the new baby.
My youngest sister saw all four of hers on Day 1. She lived four miles from them at the time. Now she is two doors down and she is immersed in the boys and their sports.
With S1, my mom came up three weeks later. Dad saw him at 8 weeks when I drove to GA with S1. With S2, they didn’t see him til 3.5 months, until I made the trip south (with two kids solo, 15 mo apart).
My FIL came to both bris ceremonies, MIL came to S1’s. We did not tell either set of parents that I was being induced. Called them afterwards. Both sets are far enough away that coming to the hospital was just not happening.
My parents didn’t meet our firstborn (who was grandchild #3) I think until he was a couple months old, but he was born in the winter and they were 3 hrs away. They met the next baby when we brought him home bc my mom was staying with us right before (I had toxemia) to help with S1. My inlaws came to the hospital both times, despite being asked to wait.
I asked, because our grandbaby to be rule is no visitors at all until 1 month, and then they "will let us know when " after that. S/DiL are 4 hrs from us, we are the only grandparents. S assured me that we will be the first to meet the baby; I said in the event they do need help from their friends (nearby, already parents of 2) for heavens’ sake don’t worry about what order people are in, get help.
My inlaws are unhappy about the timeframe and also about needing masks and TDaP boosters. I get why those are necessary but am staying out of the inlaws fray. I assume these things work themselves out, right?
Both D’s OB and my doctor said that parents and grandparents should receive the TDaP vaccine (or have received it within a certain timeframe in advance) in order to protect the baby. Apparently, pertussis is more common than we might think, and it can kill an infant.
