The Grandparent Thread

Interesting. My 7-year-old-going-on-13 GD would probably like that. I just sent the link to my son and DIL.

Some of her friends have them so they can call each other up. They can’t call anyone who hasn’t been programmed in by parents, and same for anyone else calling them.

So D ran a 5K this morning and there were some fun runs for the kids. GD ( almost 4) ran the kids mile and the. The 50 meter dash. Afterwords they went on to a preschool party and she played with friends. She said her favorite part of the day was running!

@garland I just found out today that my local GD has a Tin Can phone when I asked about getting one for her birthday next month. Seem my other GD is waiting for the color she ordered to be shipped in June. If you order now, it looks like they are not available to ship until July.

My D is only using the free version, so GD can only call other Tin Can users, she can not call a normal 10 digit phone number. A few of her friends has the phone, so she can talk to them; it will be nice during the summer when they don’t see each other at school.

Yeah, D opted for the monthly fee so kids can call relatives. But the free kid to kid is great!

I am not sure if I would get the phone for GD1 because I would be on her speed dial. She is a chatterbox, just none stop talking.

SIL sent a video of 6 yo GD chatting with a friend on her Tin Can phone. She is standing, while twirling the cord around her fingers. He added the comment-Phone fidgeting is genetic, not learned behavior! Funny to see her with the phone when she has rarely, if ever, seen or used a corded phone.

Takes me back to the days of my princess phone!

My son-in-law sent a video of the 4 year old riding a pedal bike. He’s been riding a balance bike for awhile and they put the pedals on tidy and he just took off.

Lots of awesome GS time (and stories) this weekend. Friday night was wine fest at Mount Vernon and he was there with his parents and DW. He had on one of his George Washington shirts. When he met the actor playing Washington, GS said “I have you on my shirt–on a horse.” Later after they had done tour of the house, he told George “I saw your room.”

Saturday SiL and I took him to a historical event when he colored, and got to play drums. Afterwards DW and I took him to dinner because SiL had to work and DD had a work event. At dinner after we told him the choices, he ordered his own food.

Today everyone except me (I was coaching) went to the Udvar-Hazy Center (Smithsonian Air and Space annex with big planes and ships). He was excited to tell me about seeing spaceships. Weekend ended with dinner at our local Mexican place.

Weekends like this make me very happy that they live close.

GS has rizz.

When we lived in CA, I used to take baby GS to the nearby small town and walk around carrying him or holding his hand as he toddled once he learned to walk. I was constantly getting stopped by older women who would admire him and tell me what a good looking/well behaved baby he was.

We called him “grandma catnip”–the older ladies just couldn’t resist him.

Yesterday, I had GS most of the day because older sisters had different places they needed to be.(3 kids going in 3 different directions.) I took him to the local county botanical park which was having its annual Spring Garden Day–lots of booths selling plants, a few more selling crafts, plus a bake sale. He was doing great, behaving well, admiring but not picking the flowers, staying on the paths, holding my hand so he didn’t get overrun in the crowds.

I got stopped at least 5 or 6 times by women who complimented how cute GS was, how well behaved. They were even more charmed when he felt bashful & would hide behind me when they spoke to him.

So GS’s still got “it”.

That red hair is wonderful

I am off to babysit the grandkids today while the parents go on a vacation. The other side of grandparents are showing up on Friday to take over until Monday. I am actually on in the morning from 7-8 am and evening from 6-7:30. I am looking orward to it. the kids are older now, so it won’t require me watching them every minute.

I took DGS 6 swimming today…working on getting him completely swim competent before summer camps. Boy, is he a jumping bean and live wire in the pool. He saw a friend of his there, and they spent 10 minutes chattering and splashing and talking to each other in a screechy make-believe language. I asked him later what they were saying. He earnestly said, “It’s interesting. We don’t understand each other, but we UNDERSTAND each other.”

We are returning from 4 1/2 days with family. SIL’s whole immediate family which included his parents, brother, SIL who is 6 1/2 months pregnant and their two daughters. Our grandchildren are ages 1. almost 3, almost 5, almost 7, and just turned 8. The kids have had a grand time together. The older kids had a big time in the pool with the two dads and DH including ‘chicken fights’ with kids on the men’s shoulders. The next day with the two dads, a little calmer time in the pool. The kids, the two adult brothers, and SIL all went to Sea World most of Friday while grandparents flew in and DD1 had the two wee ones.

Will see the grandkids in Dec, and possibly in Nov for Thanksgiving.

My granddaughter will be here for five weeks this summer (starting right after Memorial Day). I’m excited. She’ll spend one week at a nature camp (which is run by a local Conservation Trust organization). It’s pretty much all outdoors (weather permitting) for 5 hours. GD’s a city kid, so this should be a fun experience. My two daughters also went to this camp when they were kids. So far, GD thinks it will be fun to go to the same camp as Mommy and Auntie K.

What ages and how far away from Mom? We have 4 and 6 yr old GDs. We live pretty far away. Going to them to take care of them for over month this summer. But, wonder what age would be good for them to come here.

GD was 5 last December and she’ll start Kindergarten in August. She goes to a pre-school/day care currently, so she’s not afraid of being away from her parents. My D and SIL live in Indiana and I live in MA, but they will all be here with me for a month. D and SIL can work from home, which is what they’ll do at my house. GD seems pretty comfortable being here. Our house is probably 5 miles from the nature camp.

Have your grandkids stayed with you when their parents weren’t there? I guess that’s the key. Are the parents OK with you taking care of them for a month?

I’m hoping when my out of town grandchild is a bit older that we can have her for part of the summer. I’m imagining the cousins going to day camp together. We did a 3 night sleepover earlier this year. She did great but said next time she wants her mommy to come.
