The Grandparent Thread

Both twins adore clams–which are one of the few meats they are allowed.

Twins always ask for linguine alle volgole for their birthday dinner. Twin B loves to go with mom to the fish counter to pick up the [pre-ordered] clams and bring them home to cook.

(Grands are also allowed to have mussels & oysters, but I don’t think they’ve ever tried them.)

My kids really like shellfish and liked them always. They loved oysters Rockefeller which we let them try when they were toddlers in New Orleans, at restaurant where they originated. Didn’t have them often when they were little because they were expensive but now they order them and recently D discovered shrimp is very easy to prepare. (I never made them since I’m allergic.)

@WayOutWestMom: Why can’t the twins have meat?? Sorry if I missed it –

The household is vegetarian. Mom and Dad lean toward vegan.

Grands are allowed eggs, honey and dairy, but not meat or fish.

Shellfish are the rare exception because clams, mussels and oysters lack a developed/centralized nervous system and presumably aren’t able to feel pain as we humans understand pain.

No shrimp though….

The Parent Trap had twins exchange places. My D’s loved that movie. They’re not twins but both the original and remake are fun.

@rockymtnhigh2: I thought you were referring to your daughters as the “original” and the “remake”!!

How did things ‘settle out’ from the one-day deception? As much as they knew they could get away with it with teachers that only knew them for a very short time, it is not a good idea to repeat.

I heard a story by an actor with an identical male twin; the brother needed an ‘extra credit’ for a particular college course to obtain a better grade - the challenge was to present a lengthy dialog which he selected one that his brother knew (it was perhaps for an English course). It was at a large CA public campus. The brother agreed to do it and made sure he dressed in his brother’s clothes and the mannerisms his brother had; the teacher was impressed with his presentation and perfect dialog. They got away with it. The acting brother talked about it 10 years later.

BTW, clams are seafood - so the twins are meat-free in their diet.

I went to school with a lot of twins, and I could tell the identicals apart in all but one case. Those freckle faced, red haired boys were sooo identical, except one had a chipped tooth in the front so if I was talking face to face, then I could tell.

OTOH, I was shocked to find out two of my classmates were twins! I’d known them both (in school) for a few years and even though their names were Debbie and Diane Last name, I had no idea they were twins. Lots of kids in our school had the same last name (often cousins) but these two were so different in looks and personalities.

DH’s cousins did this all the time – and the teachers knew, and started calling them a third name (not either of theirs) until they stopped it. Their parents assigned one of them all the chores normally given to the two of them, alternating between them until it stopped.

My twin brothers used to enjoy switching classrooms in early elementary school. Once they got a little older, though, they weren’t interested in being mistaken for one another. They wanted to be known as their individual selves, so the games stopped.

During his 32 years of teaching 500 kids/year, H saw plenty of twins and triplets. He said he could always tell them apart, except for 1 pair. Never could tell. And as the PE teacher, he weighed/meausred them 2x year for 6 years. He said every time they were within 0.25” and 1 pound of each other.

The twins are non-identical so the switch will only work with teachers who haven’t met them before. Twin B is 2 inches taller and has long dark blonde hair. Her sister is shorter and has shoulder length brown hair.

Personality-wise they couldn’t be more different. Twin A is an introvert and a perfectionist with a beautiful singing voice. Twin B is very outgoing and a natural leader; she also loves being the center of attention.

Btw, when I was in elementary school (grades 1-8), I had a set of twin in my class. The same family also had a set twins in my sister’s class and another set of twins who were a year behind my brother in school. The family had 8 kids altogether: 2 singletons and 3 sets of twins. The oldest was a singleton and the other singleton was in my brother’s class. Mary; Jean & Jane; Tim & Tom; Jack; and Peter & Paul. Jean and Jane were identical twins. None of the boys were identical twins, but Tim & Tom looked so much alike it was hard to tell them apart.

I was a youth orchestra mom with a gal that was the youngest of a family of 9 kids. Her dad had 3 technical PhD’s and was a retired Navy Admiral. Her mom was a high-ranking military nurse - they had immigrated in young years from Russia and both smoked, and both lived into their late 90’s. The mom had to resign every time she was pregnant/had a baby, and then Congress would re-appoint her. She had 3 sets of twin boys. Between hired help and family organization/high achieving. This daughter had two technical master’s degrees. I enjoyed hearing the story when she was 16 and she went with her mom to the officer’s club. Two of the wives (their husbands had equal rank to this lady, and they both worked for her husband) were sitting at the senior officer table, and were kind of acting snotty to the lady, until she told them her rank and who her husband was. I just love those kinds of stories.

Crowd sourcing ideas….

Twin B is tall and very slender. She really needs a size 6 slim, especially in pants.

Does anyone know of any sources that sell that size besides Gap?

What kind of clothes does she like?

Twin B tends to be a pink and unicorn kinda gal. Nothing frilly, though. No lace, ruffles or netting.

Jeans & T-shirts. Dresses without a waist—-like polo or t-shirt style dresses—or dropped waist styles. Leggings and tunics. Some rompers or shortalls might work. (But she has to be able to get in and out of them by herself at school. Her teacher has already vetoed most jeans style overall/shortalls because of the dressing/undressing issues.)

She’s slender enough that even leggings with elastic waists don’t reliably stay up if they’re long enough to reach her ankles. I’d take in the elastic if I had my sewing machine set up.

Mom buys Twin B 6 slim jean at Gap, but that’s the only place I know of that has expanded sizes. And only for jeans. Not for other color, non-denim pants.

I found that Primary clothes run slim. Nordstrom sells this brand with 90-day free returns.

Also, The Children’s Place has a somewhat limited selection of slim fitting clothes.

Some of Target’s Cat and Jack pants have elastic with button adjustments, but if she is long legged, she might have a problem there.

Here is a pair of jeans as an example. Girls' Mid-Rise Floral Embroidered Bootcut Jeans - Cat & Jack™ Light Wash : Target

We went out to dinner with D’s family last night. GD7 and GS5 are such a pleasure to be around. Engaging and well-behaved, know how to politely order their meals, happy to draw and do puzzles on provided materials. They are NEVER handed screens, so they are used to low-tech ways to keep busy. I was sitting next to GD so we had some excellent games of tick tack toe, and we worked on a search a word together. (After we’d find a word, she’d reach for GS’s paper and mark it for him, apparently with his assent).

I remember how much my Mom loved taking my family out when my kids were little–it truly is one of the top grandparent perks!
