The Grandparent Thread

GD1 is quite slim. She wears a lot of Hanna Andersson stretchy pants. They also have some nice casual dresses.
Zara also has some nice clothes at reasonable prices.

My GD is 5 and is very tall and thin. She has lots of Hanna Andersson stretchy pants and tops. They fit well. She also wears the stretchy shorts under dresses.

D1 was trying to get a nine month photo of very active GD earlier this week. Only 15 more days until all the cuddles in Bermuda!

I have taught many pairs of twins in my career, but only one I couldn’t tell apart. I had to just assign them the same lab group and return their papers in a pile in the middle. Which also always had the same grade (a very good grade). They both played soccer at S and had identical-looking player photos on the website.

I was shopping for some clothes for the grands in the kids department of the local Nordstrom and saw this display of World Cup-themed toys. I proposed buying these adorable red and yellow cards for the soccer fans parents so that they could show their kid a yellow or red card when the kiddo misbehaves.

Super fun day with GS We went and visited Ferry Farm which is where George Washington lived from ages 6-22. The site has a replica of the house built on the original site (thanks to cool archeology work that found it). Followed it up with lunch, hanging and his house and watching the England game.

One of the highlights was him wanting to play restaurant in the toyroom and he walked around, took our orders and then cooked them in his play kitchen.

Family went to Wolftrap tonight for their one of their movie play-along concerts. The National Symphony plays the soundtrack to the movie live while the movie plays on a big screen.

Tonight was The Little Mermaid. Kids had blast and even sat reasonably still for the entire length of the concert. Big hit with everyone–even Grandma.

My daughter’s family lives near the town where Spain is staying for the WC Final, and D just sent a video of the kids beyond excited to wave as the Spain buses pass by on their way to the hotel.

Air quality is bad here. The grandkids’ day camp canceled all outdoor activities. Even pick up will be indoors instead of an outdoor car line. (Not sure how that’s gonna work, but I guess I’ll find out when I go to pick them in a half hour…)

Swim club closed the pool due to air quality issues. It’s too smoky for the lifeguards to work outdoors safely.

SIL took puppy to doggie daycare today because the smoke is so thick they can’t take her out for the long walks/runs she needs to be reasonably calm in the house.

I’m running my air purifier in the basement level (where my bedroom is) and running a second purifier on the main level where the kitchen, living & family rooms, and kids’ bedrooms are.

So no Friday night food trucks at the pool for supper tonight. (Homemade pizza instead…)

I predict the kids will be wild when they home from camp since they’ve been cooped up indoors all day and will be cooped up indoors all evening. Mom and Dad are allowing an extra movie night tonight (usual movie night is Saturday) because of the smoke.

Air quality is also bad here. It was cute this AM because D texted us “GS wants you to come for dinner and to pick him up from daycare.” We were glad to comply.

Air is supposed to be better tomorrow and we will head down to have an afternoon at the pool. It is D and SIL’s anniversary tomorrow so we will take GS to dinner and do bed time while they go out for dinner.

Getting in as much time as we can this week because we leave on a 3 week trip to the UK on Monday.

We pick two of the local kids up from preschool most Friday afternoons. Yesterday the school had an afternoon play date on the playground and it was cute to see how they interact with their friends. It was also interesting to listen how the parents talk to the children. We took them back to our house for playtime, dinner and bath. It’s one of my favorite things in my week.
We leave in a week for a family vacation with all the grands. It’s very cute to see how excited the grandkids are to see their cousins.

we travel to meet our 3 wk old GS this weekend – we are responsible, by choice for all the food and cooking for the weekend. I’ve made and frozen a variety of S2/DiL favorite meals and sides w/ the guideline of “can eat with one hand”. These are for their freezer, for later use; I’ll do the rest there (I have DiLs blessing on that)

What other ideas do you have for making ourselves useful? We can mow, not sure DiL is comfortable with us doing laundry but we also said we are available to take GS for some wee hour shifts so they can sleep. I know to keep all opinions to myself!

We’ll be back again for several days in another month, at their request, to help with some medical stuff.

@greenbutton -you can run errands and do some light cleaning if DIL and S are comfortable with that. Also pet care ( if they have pets).

I think doing the cooking and bringing frozen meals is a huge help.

Enjoy your visit!

Something for the future visits… maybe help with laundry? Little kid appreciated when I did their laundry and folded the stuff! Babies can generate a lot of laundry!

Have a wonderful time with your GS. New babies are just the best! I would plan on helping out with whatever the new parents request.

Our GD was 100% breast fed so the only thing I could help with during the night was diaper changes and making sure D1 had plenty of water and a few snacks for middle of the night feedings.

I know most of GPs on this thread are not like this…but I have heard some complaints from D1’s friends that when some GPs show up they behave as if they were guests and expected the new parents to take care of meals for them. I think some GPs behave like that because they don’t want to overstep what they are allowed to do. I think it is best to show up and be prepared to do whatever the new parents want you to do - laundry, food prep, errands, holding the baby, changing the diaper, etc. I would also include looking after the mother, to make sure she has enough liquid and food.

I made it really clear that we are not coming to visit, we are coming to help. The visit is only 36 hrs because I know better than they do that they are tired, and having other people – even ones you love — is exhausting. We are the first to see the baby and I would rather they wish we stayed, than wish we left. (Ask me about my inlaws…)

Enjoy every minute, greenbutton!

It is so kind of you to bring meals. One thing D always appreciated was a little solo time, even in the middle of the day. I would hold the baby and she would go to her bedroom to rest, read, or take a long shower.

I know people are different, but I am team “don’t do someone else’s laundry unless you know them very well and know how they do laundry.”
I will never forget when my ex-MIL “helped” by doing laundry and ruined some of my nice (dry-clean only kind of thing) clothes. Of course I couldn’t complain bc she was trying to help, but I was not at all happy.

Of course one has to offer and not be offended if that offer is declined. Thankfully, baby stuff is all meant to be washed in hot water and tumble dried! I forgot how much laundry those little things generate! And we are not talking about cloth diapers, just regular clothes!
