The Grandparent Thread

@tx5athome, Congratulations!

Thank goodness for the happy events!

I just went online and bought some clothes for the baby. I bought quite a few items, from hat to sweater, sleep blanket, sweater pants etc. I haven’t bought baby clothes in a while. It was fun. I found this pink sweater hat with sherpa lining. It was so cute.

GD #3 (baby #2 for S & DIL) was due on Friday. DIL’s mother arrived on GD #1’s birthday, 10/9, and is scheduled to stay a few weeks. I wish this baby would hurry up and get here so they have an extra pair of hands the first few days. GD #1 was 2 weeks late and they had to induce, so hoping DIL can avoid that again. Agree with many posters above, new babies help redeem 2020 and all the challenges it has brought.

Lots of Covid babies!!
Can’t recall if I mentioned, but my 3 yo granddaughter is getting a baby brother in Feb!

So a Sketcher Outlet store was opened in our area, and GS age 1 needs shoes to grow into. I bought a range of sizes up - as those little feet grow fast. GD (age 2) had some supplied by me and some from her cousin’s two girls. Now I am on-line with Sketcher’s (free ship once you set up an account). Having the shoes will definitely save DD1 on her search/shopping time.

Saw a good friend this morning - her oldest, a son is a lawyer in Singapore and married a gal from there last Nov. They are expecting a baby girl but sadly grandparents to be here can’t get into the country due to Covid. This is their first grandchild.

@oldfort. Sounds like a fun shopping spree. I’m constantly perusing online sites and now they all conveniently pop up for me. I’m pretty sure the only reason I’m still working is so that I can buy cute clothes for my 8 month old GD.

@jym626, Congratulations!

I rarely buy clothes for GS and GD, as D is a ‘super shopper’ and their drawers and closets are full. Sometimes when something is getting a bit small I will comment that I am going to miss seeing it. D will often reply, “Don’t worry, I have it in the next size.” ?

I buy GD some clothes. My favorite is to buy festive pajamas. Usually Hanna Anderson’s.

I got to keep 18-mos GS today. He is just so sweet. Several times he leaned into me for a hug. Melts my heart.

I would love a little girl someday to shop for. I see such cute girly things!

I’ve stopped buying clothes for grandkids. I got tired of buying clothes for GD that she outgrew so quickly, and S and DIL don’t believe in buying up in size. They got a ton of clothes for GS from a friend with a son a year older, so he doesn’t really need anything.

Yesterday I had a 40% off coupon deal at kohls. I asked DS and DIL what they needed, and I picked out a few outfits that were cute and super inexpensive with the sale and coupon. Turns out their baby carseat “expired” (I guess no longer has safety approval???) Anyway while the one they like didn’t qualify for the 40% off deal, it was on sale for 20% off, so I got it for them. It gave me $30 in kohls cash so I’ll get them some more onesies (now called “bodysuits”, lol) since DIL said she gave many of hers away.

My DIL has many friends with sons older than GS so they have a lot of clothes to take him well into toddlerhood. However, shoes are another matter and even though I know he’ll grow out of them before I’ve paid the credit card bill, I cannot pass up the chance to get him cute sneakers. First pair (infant size, don’t think he ever wore them except for a photo-op with his grandpa wearing the same ones) were classic New Balance and I just dropped of the last pair, shark-infested Converse, yesterday! @oldfort, it’s addictive.

I wanted to buy GD clothes, but they got so many from friends that it didn’t make sense. She hardly wears each more than a few times. Sad, because I love little girl clothes, but a huge waste of money for me to add to the pile. She’s 2, and has enough to take her into kindergarten.

I do take time with her to pick outfits. She loves finding “matches”.

I loved buying my kids Hannah Andersson clothes. When they were older, they told me they hated the stupid striped clothes I bought them. I couldn’t help myself–I ordered GD (due at the end of December) a bunch of cute sleepers and a fleece bear jacket and hat from Hannah! None of these had stripes.

I consult with my D to see what basic “holes” need filling (leggings, socks, hoodie, etc) and then usually fill them in with items from Primary.

For the most part, D has an amazing pass around system with both local friends, and out of state ones. Packages of clothes are forever going from one house or state to another. D is also a “curb alert” aficionado. She is not affluent, but lives in an affluent town, so her finds are amazing.

I found some tiny toddler New Balance in a tie dye pattern and they’re not made in the PRC. Better yet, the size I wanted was less than half price. Sometimes Amazon’s odd pricing works out. I was tempted to order a pair in a “big kids” size for myself to use as house shoes this winter.

Stride Rite was a disappointment, especially since our kids wore many pairs of their shoes. Most of the US-made toddler shoes I’ve found have either been soft mocs or smooth soled dressy shoes, neither of which would work well for us.

My sister still hasn’t met her GS, born last December in Germany. My niece and her H are active duty military there. Sis had hoped to fly there this summer.

Oh that must be so hard, @CountingDown – I sure hope they can get there!

Your sister’s experience puts things into perspective for me. I haven’t seen my grandkids since Feb, but at least my GS was 3 mo old at that time. My heart breaks for your sister.

My sister figures it will be next summer at the earliest. The military also enforces social distancing and travel (as ChaotieMom knows), so it’s not just up to when my sister can fly over there. She also can’t stay for more than a week because of her job, so if there’s a quarantine, she’s out of luck.

Niece, her H and baby are supposed to PCS back here next summer, but nearly everyone has been getting extended tours.

Such is life in the military!
