The Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2014 Thread

I am having such strong AP Statistics flashbacks that I think I need to go lie down…

Wow. This thread is incredible. And very informative.

qizixite: You realize that you are going to love the University of Chicago? And that you probably belong there? (Not that you couldn’t belong at Harvard, too, but this whole effort positively screams “Chicago”.)

All of you: Really, it’s time to start letting go. Almost every one of you will be going to a fabulous university or college. Harvard is merely a great university, not magical, and if it is indeed the greatest university the difference between it and all of these others is a tiny increment on a huge base of fundamental similarity. A single undergraduate is unlikely to be able to tell the difference, and could easily have a better experience at one of the others than at Harvard. A year from now, you won’t care, unless you decide to poison your own life.

JHS, I know I’ll love U. Chicago! I’m babysitting right now so I decided to fiddle around with some numbers. And don’t worry, I am not poisoning my life, just enjoying it.

stressed23, what I did is really really shoddy statistics so I wouldn’t be too worried.

So on April 1, maybe 1500 of us got lottery tickets, which gave us a shot at an unknown number of grand prizes – four years at Harvard (with or without some or all expenses paid). If the odds of winning were 1/20, that was a little worse than the prior odds of getting a prize instead of a ticket on April 1, but still better than you get in Powerball.

So, 7 weeks later, an unknown number of the prizes have been awarded, and we think most of the other lottery tickets have been voided. Our data mavens believe that the expected value of the tickets that are still in play is on the upswing: odds of 1 in 10, maybe even 1 in 5.

Does that mean those of us who still hold active tickets should be thrilled – things are getting better all the time?

I don’t know about you, but I am not that thrilled. Still, great metaphor/analogy!

Sorry for all the parenthetical statements and exclamation points

@ EnoughAlready: thanks so much (keep reading. . . )!

Hey guys, for those wondering, I called Princeton and found out I got in! I’m really excited, though I really hope to still be allowed to take a gap year (I asked about that around April 1st and both Harvard and Princeton said it’d be okay to defer if accepted off the WL, but I found out I have to ask permission from the dean – nerves.)

You guys and your unbelievable statistics (I don’t care how shoddy you claim that they are) are really impressive, and I hope they foretell good things for everyone! I wasn’t in AP stat [yay calc. . . which I failed miserably], but rejecting some kids definitely gives you better chances (hehe). Keep us all posted!

Hurray! Have fun at Princeton!!!

That’s amazing, ilove11alot. Congratulations. I am basically going to hang around the thread a little, though definitely not as much because I have no more emotion invested in the process.

@iluv11alot

Congrats!! Have a wonderful time at Princeton. It is a fabulous educational opportunity and a beautiful campus.

iluv11alot: Congrats – Princeton’s a great school! It’s pretty hard to find places that can match it for the undergrad experience.

i’m also on the extended waitlist, good luck to us all!

just called, and apparently i’m on “waitlist hold.” guess this just means more waiting.

I got a letter in the mail that said I can’t be offered admission so I’m out.

@sanguinity, did you also get an email, or just something in the mail?

so i’m still in limbo,
but from everything i’ve read about past harvard waitlist cycles thats usually what happens. they start weeding people out about mid may, a few get accepted and alot get rejected. then as they hear back from the people they’ve accepted they continue the process. in the past june 6th has been doomsday, when they send out all of the final decisions. though this year may very well be different i was told to hope not to get a letter/ notification until june because thats when most of the acceptances went out.

not sure if that helps at all but it might mean that being on the extended waitlist isnt such a bad thing, or at least it wasnt a bad sign in the past.

has anyone heard about the z-list yet? or are we still waiting on that one too?

I called them today and they told me I was on the extended wait list. They also said that committee is meeting this week and next week, and that the final decisions would go out the first week of June. That’s only two weeks! Good luck everyone!

Called the admissions office just now - I’m still on the waiting list.

Very grateful to still be in the running at this point, and good luck to everyone else in the same position!

Is anyone sending in another update? I can’t decide whether that would be pestering or informative.

-Optimism!

I sent in another update today, but only because my school had its award banquet last night and I won a couple things.

Did anyone else get a type of form letter when they sent stuff in?
