The Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2014 Thread

I’m trying to decide whether to send in another update. My honors convocation was last night, and I somehow received five honor keys (highest honors in academic fields, chosen by teachers) in distinct subject areas. This isn’t unprecedented (one of my friends who graduated last year got that many, and there have probably been others in the past), but this year out of about 1500 students I was the only one who got more than three. I also got two scholarships for academic excellence, only one of which I applied for.

Personally, I think this is pretty impressive, and it shows that people who have actually seen me in class found something special in me, but I’m hesitating for two reasons. First, there’s the constant worry of bothering admissions. Second, it doesn’t represent a new accomplishment, only the recognition of four years of hard work (which should logically already have been seen in my application).

Any ideas? Thanks, and sorry if I sounded conceited in this post. It was actually sort of embarrassing to have to walk up to the lectern so many times.

nickwasy, I would send it in! Here’s my last update until tomorrow;

Welcome! I’m putting college of matriculation in brackets. Please state your own and I’ll add it!

If your name is in bold PLEASE come out and say hi so we can confirm that you are remaining on the waitlist! Thanks! More people should come out and join us!

First Post from an obsessive parent. Feel like I know all you young people well now…this has been an important window into internet based relationships for me!

Anyway, my son has neither been rejected or accepted at this point, so I guess that would put him on the extended waitlist. He has accepted a place in the NYU Stern BPE program but is still hoping…the other student at his school (private school in the Bay Area, CA) on the wait list was accepted on Tuesday when it appears that all the acceptance calls were done. We were kind of surprised that they kept him in the running given that it would seem unlikely that Harvard would accept two kids from his small school given that they have accepted maybe one other in the history of the school. It’s not over until the fat crimson lady sings…

Good luck to all of you CCers still waiting!

nickwasy: Highest honors in 5 subjects voted by teachers? Send that in immediately! Worst case is it gets ignored. But it might just help.

fatstraw, any information you can share as to the profile of the accepted student from your son’s school?

Hoomaikai received the “official letter” in the post today with a reply postcard that is due at 86 Brattle by 4.30pm, June 2nd. I think that means that by that next day they will know how many more they will accept.

I don’t think there is a date in which requests for “gap years” are due–so that might continue to cause additional places (BTW, my S IS going to do a gap year–he had already gotten permission from Chicago and has the year set up, so his “acceptance” shouldn’t cause a “problem” for any CC’ers on the extended list. :slight_smile: ) The regional rep mentioned 54 as the number – but he doesn’t recall if she said that is the final figure or just the figure for the May round…

Best of luck to everyone regardless where the dice lands-- you all will do brilliantly, I am sure.

STMOORE

In response to your question, my son’s classmate looks alot like most of you in this forum, bright, high achiever, championship debater etc…although I will tell you that when she decided to stay on the Havard waitlist rather than accept her admission to Brown he was not happy as he viewed her as a superior candidate to him…but clearly there is no formula as to who and why Harvard accepts and rejects candidates.

nickwasy, Send the update in asap and have your guidance counselor follow up on Monday confirming your details. It may not change the ultimate outcome, but it can’t hurt. Send it to the admissions officer who covers your school. Good luck!

My guess is that decisions will come out again next week, maybe around Wednesday, same as this week.

I don’t think so…I think it will be more like Thursday/Friday June 3/4 or Monday June 7th.

Hello- my D is on the extended wait list. Northeast area. I agree with Noaflora- my D called on Thursday and was told that decisions were due from the first wave of accepted WL students on the 26th. Further acceptances would be made after that date, so possibly the week after? I wonder if all the spots were offered in this first wave, or if only some were? Does anyone know?

Welcome Karmak! I’m putting college of matriculation in brackets. Please state your own and I’ll add it!

I wouldn’t expect a second wave until after June Second (Thanks EtonDad). Any alternate opinions?

16 reported being accepted by 05-26-2009, 02:52 PM * #1053 everyone heard on the tues.wed.thurs 19-20-21

next wave on the 12th of June Aprroximately 22 admitted by the 14th.

WL rejected.

Hi everyone. I am the parent of a Harvard wait list student who was admitted last Tuesday, May 18. She recieved a phone call from her regional admissions officer in the evening on her cell phone. She was given until Wednesday May 26 at 4:30 PM to reply but did so earlier and accepted the offer. She received an email confirming the next day and a large envelope from Harvard yesterday. (She is out of town so it has not yet been opened.)

We have both been watching this thread regularly for several weeks but she never wanted to post. Just FYI she has withdrawn from Brown and is delighted to be going to Harvard. We have been surprised that there are no other Brown students on your lists…

To those who ask about submitting other honors - I would do it. My daughter sent an update to her regional admissions officer in early May by email, which he acknowledged. It listed her accomplishments and activities since she submitted her application. She also restated that if admitted she would definitely attend Harvard. I don’t think it can hurt at this point and it might help.

I want to wish those of you still waiting the best of luck. You sound amazing and it is clear to me that Harvard could double its class with talented, passionate scholars if it had room for everyone. Good luck!

Thanks Adhbhs!

@adhbhs or anyone else

Do you know how to find one’s regional admissoins officer’s e-mail?

WL reject. Going to Yale though and would be REALLY happy if Yale beats Harvard at The Game 2010 :P

2014Harvard: We got his name from her college counselor. We had to ask how to contact him and were given his email address. You might be able to get it by calling the Admissions Office; as others have pointed out they are incredibly nice on the phone the one time I called.

thank you adhbhs!

@2014Harvard: If your college counselor doesn’t have the info, or if you don’t want to wait until tomorrow, a little creative googling will usually get you to the name of the representative of Harvard who speaks at prominent prep schools in your geographical area. Once you have the name, you can get the email address here: <a href=“Harvard Web Directory”>Harvard Web Directory;
