The Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2014 Thread

@KeepHopeAlive: Thank you for the tip! However, I cannot find my regional admissions officer via the link. O-o

@2014Harvard, call admissions or email college@fas.harvard.edu and ask them who your regional rep is or how to get an update letter to him/her. They are very nice and will tell you.

2014Harvard: call Monday AM to get an email address which could be generic; put your name and school in the subject line so the email will get directed to the right person soonest. The waitlist has been whittled down quite a bit, so your info will get to the right person quickly. Your guidance counselor should know the name btw; it’s not a secret.

I have been following this forum since my daughter was put on the wait list. She finally got up the nerve to call Admissions today and found out she is definitely on the extended wait list. So, with that confirmation, I decided to come out of hiding! She has put her deposit down at University of Texas.

Welcome Latida!

I’m putting college of matriculation in brackets. Please state your own and I’ll add it!

If your name is in bold PLEASE come out and say hi so we can confirm that you are remaining on the waitlist! Thanks! More people should come out and join us!

Last Year:
16 reported being accepted by 05-26-2009, post #1053. Everyone who was accepted from the thread heard on the 19th, 20th, and 21st which was a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This was probably the first wave.

Next wave seemed to happen on the 12th of June with about 6-10 more students from the thread accepted from the 14th to the 29th of June.

Was there a first wave of rejections prior to that?

Hurtlocker: it seems that the pattern was exactly the same last year with most rejections going out in the first wave. BUT it also seems that the rejections were sent out by snail mail which delayed the responses on CC… Their transcriber (master-list-person) was… (ahem ahem)… not thorough.

Note: their first wave seemed to have started somewhat earlier (14th-17th of May) and trickled onward over the next week instead of our seemingly coordinated one-day wave.

thank you HurtLocker and dar5995 very much! I am still on the waitlist.

does anyone have a sense (perhaps from previous years?) whether anyone taken off the waitlist at this late date will be asked to take a gap year/ (zlist?) Is there anyone on the extended waitlist who is a legacy?

Next wave seemed to happen on the 12th of June with about 6-10 more students from the thread accepted from the 14th to the 29th of June.

In last year’s thread the Z-list acceptances were scattered and seemingly random (although probably based on hooks which are impossible to confirm).

qizixite – We don’t know if any of us will make it off the WL, but with your work ethic and attention to detail, you deserve a spot, and you’re bound to have a lot of future success with or w/o Harvard. Thanks for keeping us so organized and well-informed.

Live, thread, live! LIVE, so that I may read you and tremble in fear/anticipation of the next wave.

Yup, this thread is faltering. I think that everything that could be said has been said in the past seventeen-hundred posts and now it is just time to wait… and wait… and wait… Five weeks until we are definitely free!

I have a question… does all this waiting without a lot of hope create warmer or colder feelings towards Harvard. I received a very classy letter from Caltech saying that they hope I will consider them again for graduate school…definite warm feelings…when the likely rejection comes from Harvard I wonder how I will feel. To be so close, but so far!

@floridahopeful:
I have to say that i am relieved that my Daughter was turned down flat after the waitlist. I feel a bit ??? for the kids that are still hopeful, and although a few might make it to Harvard, most will only endure the torture a bit longer before getting the same result as a rejection back in April.

Dadwonders, was your daughter on the waitlist this year?

Floridahopeful, my feelings have definitely gotten “colder.” I love Harvard but as time has passed there are certain things which rub me the wrong way (sorry, I had to use the cliche). I am liking U. Chicago more and more. As I said in an earlier post, it is really hard to love one school enough to attend for four years only to be willing to turn your back on it (ack! another overused phrase) for another school.

The thread is nice just because it makes the time go more quickly.
How about a new sub-topic? Does anyone have exciting summer plans?

dadwonders is probably right that most of us are just going to get dripped on a little longer before we’re finally flushed for good.

Like qizixite, I find I’m reluctantly falling out of love with Harvard, and leaning more and more toward loving the one I’m with – Dartmouth, in my case. One reason is it’s hard to lock in summer plans until I know where I’m going in the Fall.

Ya, summer seems increasingly shorter as Harvard decisions take longer and longer to come out. I don’t have concrete summer plans yet, but perhaps an internship or job.

Redlinetoharvard: I wonder if our minds would flip back the other way if we were accepted to Harvard. Ahhhh Psychology; not wanting to go to a college which doesn’t want you.

It’s funny how our minds work. Princeton was my dream for two years, but within days of their rejection I had myself convinced that I would be at least as happy at Harvard as I would have been there. Now I see myself more at Harvard than at Princeton or MIT, which was originally my second choice. At this point I really feel like I can succeed and enjoy myself at either of my choices (the other being Michigan).

In other news, I submitted my update by email yesterday and this morning I received a form response saying that it would be printed and added to my file.
