The Home Improvement Thread

Your second link goes to “page not found.” Re: too light. Have you tried painting a small section to see how it really looks? Like the grey, too.

Dang it:

[Life At Sea](Life At Sea M510-2 | Behr Paint Colors)

Yes we got some samples and put them on the wall. The Vaporize color is too pale for my liking.

ETA: That Behr tool is neat, but the color representations on the monitor are not all that close to what they look like on the wall.

I was surprised that paint chips of colors other than off white or beige look way different than paint on the wall, so I highly recommend painting a section. I like Life at sea, too.

Ooh, don’t paint a section of wall! Paint a large piece of wallboard, that way you can move it all over and see it in the different lights plus you don’t have to worry about those patches showing through once you paint. I picked up many paint chips that looked all the same at 1x2" but painting a 6x8 or larger and the pale color showed it’s green/blue/gray/brown undertone.

I would love induction and gas on a burner. It is the best of all worlds. It isn't very common though on standard options.

If you do what somemom recommends, make sure the wallboard is textured and primed the same way the walls are, and that includes mud, and if you hang it, make sure it is absolutely flush with the wall… because otherwise the light will reflect differently. I found it to be too much trouble. Painting a chunk of the wall here and there was easier. But for a small bathroom, I suspect it will not be a huge issue.

I am guilty of painting about 17 swatches on one wall and then the finalists on every other wall in the room, we have really changeable light from outdoors. There were some tense moments when I could see the squares showing through, but a little extra paint took care of it

The highest grade (thickest) Kilz is a worthwhile splurge!

I would put a sample of that Vaporize up on the wall. It looks like it might come out too much like baby blue.

We did put up a sample, it very much looks like a baby blue.

DW is afraid of color, for some reason. It is very difficult to get her to agree on anything that’s not very light-colored or pastel-ish.

Although I like the Vaporize color, I agree that it might look too light. I would use it to paint the inside of the “white friend room” if there is a separate toilet closet in the bathroom, and use a darker color on the bathroom walls.

Speaking of light colors. I found the most amazing color I though… painted it on the house, and it looked very light. Almost off-white. We are going with a darker color. I doctored the FA color a little, so now it will be a SW “match.” We have our own color name for it.

Dang. Here goes my weekend of painting. Rain is in the forecast. Guess I will be washing the deck and painting the inside walls where I can.

I have not read this entire thread, so please forgive me if this has been discussed. I am slowly updating my 1978 kitchen. So far, I have painted the lower cabinets white. That’s it. But I have discovered they now make a low-profile over-the-range microwave that will fit in my space! I don’t use my microwave often so I don’t need a large one.The normal ones will not leave enough space between the bottom of the microwave and the stove-top. I am now motivated to get back to this project!

Wow, I love that. Who uses anything bigger than a mug in a microwave anyway?

Very nice looking microwave. But take your coffee mug and some other things with you to a store and see if they fit in there

Update on my project:

It has been 11 weeks since construction started.

We have spent about $82K or so, so far. I’ve been charging so much stuff my CC company put a security block on my card, I had to call them to get it lifted.

Done so far:

Demo is done.
Foundation work is done.
Framing is done.
Windows and exterior doors installed.
Rough electric is done.
Rough plumbing is done.
Framing, rough plumbing, and rough electric inspections are done.
New front porch is done.

Lights are purchased.
Plumbing fixtures are purchased.
Appliances are 1/3 paid for.
Kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and tops, and mirrors are purchased.
Wine fridge is purchased. We would up getting a 15" wide one.

Next week:

Insulation gets installed (mostly foam I think).
Fireplace gets chopped. I’m a bit nervous about this.

Week after:

Dry wall and plaster! This is when it all starts to come together IMO.
Exterior siding (we decided to re-side the front and back, since the old siding got all messed up because of the window and door work. Jury is out on the rest of it, we have to see how the budget goes.)

Still to buy:

Countertops
Backsplash
Bathroom tile
Stove hood
Flooring
Railing system
I’m sure I forgot some stuff

I uploaded the final kitchen cabinet layout:

https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/32532343@N00/43100122431/in/dateposted-public/

I wound up getting four new cabinets to deal with the mistake on the blueprints, and I decided to give up the cabinet symmetry on the stove wall. Oh well!

I’ll use a couple of the cabinets in the laundry room, and I’ll find somewhere else to use the others, they won’t go to waste.

Here’s what we picked for vanities:

Master bath in white: https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/birch-lane-48-single-bathroom-vanity-bl23090.html

Guest bath in grey with a quartz top: https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/kitchen-bath-collection-abbey-42-single-bathroom-vanity-set-kbcl1327.html?piid=24299156

We decided for budget reasons to get vanities that came with tops. Maybe someday if we get bored with the tops we will replace them with something fancy, although honestly I suspect that will never happen.

NRE, we got $5,000 in Visa and Costco Exec rebates last year. Yeah, I had to unblock that darn card. So. Many. Times. Hope you are getting some nice points or rebates out of all that spending! Great progress!

Another new thing I found while surfing the net this week is a new color of appliances. Not sure if anyone but Whirlpool makes it and I have not seen it in person, but I am intrigued. Sunset bronze: https://homedepot.com/p/Whirlpool-33-in-22-cu-ft-French-Door-Refrigerator-in-Sunset-Bronze-WRFA32SMHN/302692276?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cG%7cBase%7cD29A%7c29-13_REFRIGERATION%7cMULTI%7cNA&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI68m0xsz62wIVwUCGCh0yAQhsEAQYASABEgLfsPD_BwE&dclid=CJ2iq8rM-tsCFQV7AQodU5QI-A

Musicmom, I like that color, but I wouldn’t want to be limited to all Whirlpool appliances.

Not rich enough, I especially like the master bath vanity.
