The Home Improvement Thread

Almost all doors are up, and I definitely feel like I walked into a real kitchen, not this sterile place where the cabinets blended into the walls! The previous owner used 2 paint colors in the house: one for the ceiling, and the other for everything else, trim, cabinetry, you name it. I actually like the color on the walls, but kitchen cabinets should stand out IMO. Can you imagine a completely white kitchen with white walls? Nope.

Crickets at my house while we wait for our doors to show up. Originally the contractor said we’d be getting all the shelving done this week and now suddenly the doors need to be here first. Doors are supposed to be here next week Friday and then we’ll need to wait for the closet people…and then the painter. We have family and friends staying with us starting Friday Oct 2nd. Visits can’t be moved.

Mirrors in the bathroom turning into a huge problem because the faucets now need to come out because of the way the upper towers were designed. Hopefully next week.

It feels like it will never end :frowning:

@momofsenior1 - what a cute dog!

We just visited my Sis-IL right in the middle of their remodeling project. We had put off seeing them in July and August because of it, but everything got pushed back, you know the drill, and there it was.

We weren’t there very long but we all had a safe place to sleep and there were plenty of restaurants to visit so all was well. You’ll get through it!

We’ve already warned everyone that it wont be totally done. My goal is to have the guest room clean and usable. right now it’s a staging area for the furniture that needs to go in the den, which is currently our bedroom. Dinner reservations have already been made!

Like you, this visit was pushed off multiple times already :frowning:

Owww!!! So sorry that your problems keep piling on.

The kitchen is looking awesome! All that is left is crown molding (we are going with flat) on top of the cabinets and a few mismeasured doors and a panel above the subzero. Their craftsmen are very good, the designer is very good, but the project manager might have had an extra drink the night before coming to measure. There are no 49 inch fridges!

I’m back from 10 days in CA. Now, while it’s getting cold at night here, the wait for the plumber to come back with the electrician and get the new boiler working. I texted her to coordinate dates. No answer yet. But we do have lots of hot water, from the new tank. And nothing paid yet.

Oh, lol, I did save myself a bunch of work by deciding I like the DR and LR colors. Excellent, because I will repaint the foyer and 2nd fl hall. This peculiarity I have about color shades pays off when I hit the right tone…I like it forever.

The question is the kitchen. It’s now a kitchen-y light terracotta/tangerine. Everyone loves it but I have to repaint cuz of where a leak was fixed and replastered. I do like tone on tone, walls that are same family as cabinets (an ivory shade.) I have to decide if I want to make that leap.

.I have made a list of all the tools I will need to tile my little 50-square-feet bathroom myself. Haven’t priced them yet, but the list is long and it may be cheaper to just pay someone to do it!

My house is seriously cursed. I went to get ready for bed last night and there was no power to the entire back of the 2nd floor. Went down to the electrical panel and everything was in the right position. Turned the breaker on/off to no avail. Checked the GFIs and nothing. The electrician was here yesterday labeling the panel so no idea what he did that would have killed the power. That part of the house has all brand new wiring :frowning:

@momofsenior1 Honestly, I can’t believe it. This is too much.

Meanwhile, I have to get my act together and call the plumber today. Should have done it on Monday.

The ramboards and plastic are gone! All trim is up, and the place looks gorgeous despite missing a few doors that were mismeasured. The kitchen guys really appreciated a token gift of Rombauer Zinfandel. They will be back in a couple of weeks to attach the missing pieces.

Off to dust the kitchen!

Contractor said we have a ā€œbadā€ circuit in the panel. Electrician coming Monday. Basically something is up with the entire second floor as we went into the guest room yesterday (aka the staging area), and only one of the three lights turned on. Hopefully we can get it all remedied :frowning:

Good news is that the movers are back today and we’re moving into our new master bedroom. Hooray!!! We will still be missing one closet and the interior doors, but it gives us the opportunity to properly set up the office and guest rooms, and finally be finished on the first floor as we have some den furniture down there.

Next week will be the electrician, bathroom mirrors, and the interior doors on Thursday. Hoping the closet organizer company can come Friday to install the shelving but we’ll see. The following week the painter will be back for the last time. Praying we will then finally wrap it up!

The flooring is complete on the main level! It looks great!

And the electrician showed up this weekend and installed the very cool ceiling fan:

and the very contemporary light in the foyer:

And the backsplash is about 70% finished:

After 51/2 months, we can finally see the finish line.

Awesome @notrichenough!!!

Great choice of a lighting fixture for the entryway! And love your ceiling fan a lot. The backsplash was worth waiting for.

Oh wow! I love all three!

Those are all great!

I like the fan, does it work more or less strongly than a regular one? Coralbrook needed to see your light for her MCM redo. The backsplash is absolutely stunning, I love it!

Thanks everyone, we are pretty excited. It’s always fun when the neighbors come over and gush about the whole project, too.

We didn’t really crank the fan up because w didn’t want to blow the dust around (and there’s a lot of dust).

Would you consider that light to be in the MCM style? It wasn’t described that way in the catalog. We just thought it looked cool.

Looks great - I loved that fan, but it wasn’t rated for damp locations so I couldn’t use it on my porch. Everything looks great. The light is great. I don’t know that the light fixture is MCM - but it’s definitely compatible.

Your entryway light is one of @BunsenBurner favorites

Just going to throw this out there…the plaid dorm couch in the great room is probably going to have to go after all this work to lighten up the space)
