I LOVE this thread. I have wondered if there were any normal people that get into USC, or just the people that think a 2200 on SAT is bad, or an unweighted 4.0 is mediocre. Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled for their academic achievements, actually in awe of them. Certainly though, some emphasis has to be put on EC’s, community service, etc. Wouldn’t admitting some of those amazing people, the ones that perform poorly on standardized testing, but do well in school be beneficial to the student population? Certainly there are many diamonds in that rough.

My daughter fits tornados’ description perfectly. She has a 3.98 GPA, tons of ECs like volunteering, clubs and part-time work experience related to her major (business.) But her SAT and ACT scores are just kind of in the middle or low end of middle. She’s a hard worker and extremely motivated (as well as social) so I know she would absolutely love USC and thrive there, but we think acceptance is about 50/50. She did an interview though with USC which went extremely well, so maybe that will help? It’s hard to keep waiting but not too much longer!

haha unweighted. and when i applied, my gpa was a 3.4 (i did really well first term senior year)

and people tell me my SAT is a great score, and while it’s not bad, too many people have higher scores in my school :P

How do you know you got in? have they sent out RD decisions yet? Or were you notified of scholarships?

So, since I am semi familiar with NYC private schools I know many of the schools are extremely rigorous. The most brilliant person I ever met went to Dalton and the to Bronx Science (public). He finished the whole course of study at Dalton by 15. But then again, a friend of my daughter’s went to a NYC private that was very progressive. She, the kid said, it was the easiest academic time of her life. Artic…the score is very good.

Soonemptynestor, I heard the interview is HUGE and a major advantage to getting in. I didn’t even know they were doing them. I didn’t turn my thoughts toward SC until December and the deadline to apply in January. I initially listened to everyone who said, don’t bother, it can’t be done, your SAT’s aren’t good enough, etc. I finally just said, “I can do this, I know I am capable of succeeding at USC.” But my delay caused me to miss the 1st round of everything. Ah well…

For the record, I have a 3.5 unweighted and my SAT’s are in the “low” area, not even middle-low, I mean rock bottom, embarrassing, humiliating, etc… I don’t test well because of extenuating circumstances and explained why on my essay. Hopefully, that matters to them and they are willing to take a risk on me.

I really do want to post here that I was accepted. Then, and only then, will I post my SAT’s and watch you all scream, “OMG, I didn’t think they scored anyone that low!!!”

Tornados - don’t lose hope! When you post your acceptance, I’ll post my daughter’s! I REALLY hope you both get in - like you say, there are many kids who work hard and do well in school, but for whatever reason don’t do that well on standardized tests. Great that you talked about that in your essay. Although I’m sure your scores are as low are you described with several adjectives . . . So, chin up!! Or rather “Fight on!” :-)

Yikes - meant to say “NOT as low!”

Bronx Science is the rival of my school haha… Of course, I say mine is better
I kid I kid

Yeah, I know that it’s a great score… but some of the kids I know haven’t gotten in yet and their stats are way better than mine.

Tornados - I did not interview. My admissions officer for my region actually said its better if you do not, because only rarely will they help. In most cases they will not affect your application in any way, or might actually hurt it.

Well below 1000/1500…

Hey, it’s ok…the guy is a lot older than me. And I am, I suspect, ancient to someone in your age group. He did rather well for himself btw.

And speaking as someone who has had poor architectual input into our house…we need good architects.

*below 1000/1600…typo

Shocking huh? The snowball I sent rolling towards hell has already melted. I won’t get in, but this has been fun.

I’m really glad everyone is enjoying this thread. Just to clarify: the acceptances are from LAST year, not this year. So no, the next wave has not started yet.

Let me start off the next wave, then:

GPA: 3.92 UW
SAT: 1840 (590 M 630 CR 620 W)
Major: Computer Science (Games)
How do you think you got in?: Not only did I get in, I also got in with a Dean’s scholarship. My GPA def helped, along with the fact I’m an int’l student applying from Sudan and that may have made me stand out. I heard my recs were fantastic and I think my essay was good stuff. I dare you to find someone else on College Confidential who gets into USC’s engineering school with a math SAT score that’s below 600, and having not submitted any math or science subject test scores.

tornados

i know how you feel. My SATS are similar to yours. I guess the only thing keeping my hopes alive are my SAT Subject test scores in Spanish and US History. Just don’t even worry about it and enjoy these last 3 weeks. If anything you might be surprised to see the big white envelope.

dbroncos23, Thanks! I have to be honest, I am really enjoying being on these boards. It is an intimidating time for all of us and it is fun to share with people who get that.

I hope the best for you, good to hear I am not the only one with unusual stats (isn’t that a nice way to put it??? lol).

tornados, thanks! I hope the best for you as well. It is sometimes crazy to see some of the scores on here. For example, I’ve seen a couple people post 700’s saying it was a bad score.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen this video but I saw it a couple of times during college football season. This also is giving me hope lol.

[YouTube - Our Choice: University of Southern California](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4WMLg2oHuM)

this brings me some hope
thank you for this thread!:)

Lmao dbroncos, that video is SO cheesy. I love it.

Magicalmalik, you are so not underqualified for usc! I’d kill for your gpa.

In reference to the interview, uhoh? I interviewed, but at this point I’ve heard it can help you a ton and also that it barely helps or even hurts you. Hmm.

When I was on campus we also talked to this kid in the marching band (if I get in, of course I’m doing marching band!) And he said that a lot of the people he has met interviewed. He said that it seemed to help a lot. But maybe he was just trying to make me feel better about the whole thing.

Anyway, I don’t know what the interview does at this point. (:
