I don’t think is the need-aware colleges. On wiki, it says the colleges are ones that do not consider your financial need during admission. They only consider merit.

Correct me if I’m wrong. =)

The list does not apply to international students.

For example, Stanford will reject internationals who need money if they have no money to offer.

OTOH, MIT meets fullneed but will only have 100 students in the final pool because there is a cap for international students.

err,
are the need-based full-need FA colleges just for domestic students?
…and there are need-blinds for internationals? (Like HYP).

So, as to say, the need-blinds are the only hope for the internationals, like indians, who want full ride FA? and there is no such thing as need-based full-aid colleges?

thanks texaspg…
Do u have any info about U of H giving decisions regarding the applicants. I applied in the first week of march and i have not got any answers from them. They do e-mailed me in the last week of april that they will take a decision by 1 of june probably. Is it a bad sign for me?

Faisal - Keep after them. If you are a good student, admission should not be too hard at U of H. The aid usually comes from the department and this is usually quite late for aid consideration since they hand them out in March.

I read some previous post where one wants to do the ACT in September. Is it really done in September?

Paayas- nope.
ACT cannot be done in September! Atleast not in India. I checked up the dates as well. The next one is in October.

Rew seriously? Daaamn.
When exactly in Oct?

[ACT Registration : Test Dates in the U.S., U.S.Territories, and Canada](<a href=“ACT Registration | ACT Testing Dates | The ACT Test”>ACT Registration | ACT Testing Dates | The ACT Test)

I am guessing the dates match India dates except for September and some locations not having all dates.

@Paayas- No, need based colleges are those who don’t see your financial status during admissions. You asking for aid has no effects on your application in these colleges.

One the other hand need aware are those who do give out aid to students but your financial status plays a role in your application.

The correct term is need blind, isn’t it??
phreak: When are you heading to MA??

@North: I think 20 something. Check up.
@phr34k: Thank you. I am not familiar with the terms yet. :)

@Mrinal- Sometime around 20th August. Orientation’s on 28th August and classes start on 4th of Sept…

And yep, the actual term is need blind!

@north: ACT is on Oct-22…

GUYS, am confused even more.
i know what a need-blind is and i know what a need-aware is.
some colleges claim to be need-based and yet give full aid to internationals? like williams. middlebury and amherst (which is already a needblind)?!
Correct me if i am wrong or i got the wrong information.

any 16er care to answer it?

also, i have 1000+ volunteer hours ( 2 years of worth).
someone said that i should reduce this number for it sounds very fishy.
what should i do?

^ Did you count travelling time / waiting time in those 1000 hours?

If so, remove them.

Also, instead of reducing the reported number, just divide them up by activity in the additional information section.

–

Need based is a type of aid. Usually written as need based aid. Basically means that you’re not eligible for aid if your parents earn a million dollars a month.

@rew2402- Need based and need blind are the same. Williams and Middlebury are the two of the most aid friendliest non need blind for international students. Your asking for aid generally has no major change, but it is taken into account.

Amherst is need blind BTW. Your financial status has NO effect on your application whatsoever.

Need based is a term used to distinguish between the types of aid being given out. Like merit based aid would mean you would get aid based on your merit, even if you can afford it. Need based means it would depend on your proven need for it.

Need blind and need aware are used to define what are your admission policies pertaining to aid, whether you take into account an applicant has asked for aid (need aware) or not (need blind). UChicago is need aware so if you apply for aid, you are placed into an even more difficult pool of applicants. MIT or Harvard turn a “blind” eye on whether you ask for aid or no… Hope this clears your confusion…

And yeah do as Tizil, said; split your 1000 hours into different activities in your application…

@Tizil7: I have way over 1000 hours working on the same thing, how do I go about that?

In your applications, there will be different slots for your activities, divide the hours based on different activities you did and/or purposely reduce the number of hour shown…

Anyone? 10char
