^Gawd, who do I think I am??
idream is going to Stanford too, not that I don’t envy her.
idream, you will need to PM me everything about Stanford campus.

Just so you know, I am a domestic applicant now
I will be moving to NY now.

^ Good good :D

You really are going places aren’t you?

Mrinal, sure I will. And wow! You’re gonna have it so much easier than us
Plus so many colleges will now be need-blind for you! And NY is amazing. Will you be in NYC?

Menial, while you may be a domestic applicant, do you have a PR or something of the sort? Because most of that need blind aid is for citizens and PRs.

@mrinal-Are you being serious? Cuz Im not getting it. :P

I haven’t even started my essays. I’ll start them in a few weeks. I have school exams now.

Congratulations Mrinal2207!

I will be in NYC now.
Lets just say that my mom got transferred to NY and the company worked out the specifics.
@pratyush: Already got a house at NYC. So, I think that will make me a PR.
@Tiz: Lol, You are going to Cali

^ Omg NYC!!! I love that city. Who doesn’t, though. You, Mrinal, are one lucky guy.
But wouldn’t it be a little hard? Making a shift to the other side of the world in the middle of your class 12?

Wow Mrinal, lucky you!

Hi guys! I’m back from my hiatus. Working on my common app essay. How is everyone doing?

Mrinal- I don’t think just staying there counts as being a PR. A PR entails having a green card and also maintaining it. Are you a Green card holder? If so then you would have aid benefits regardless of where you attended high school, in NY or overseas. The only thing different is that the context in which your applications is evaluated (country-wise) changes. In your case its a good thing because internationals that get accepted usually have more impressive stats than domestic ones (in general not always).

If someone needed a visa to get into US, they do not become permanent residents. It is an arduous process when applied through work and takes about 5-6 years. So unless a family member in US sponsored several years ago and the paperwork just completed, it is not easy to become a PR just by moving to US. I have colleagues who have lived here for 10 years or more who are still in limbo waiting on PRs and some have kids going to college in 2013.

One advantage to living in US and paying taxes etc - the state where one resides in may have rules allowing the children to pay in state tuition within the state at the state resident level. They have varying rules in each state but most states have 1 year residency requirement although some may have longer terms.

The private schools OTOH still treat you as an international applicant for financial aid. However, if one can get into some of the ivies which claim not to discriminate based on nationality for FA, then it is easy. However, many schools do treat you no different for FA than being from India. One of my colleagues who has the PR problem has been asking each college when they come and present and this is usually the most common answer - for application we treat you as in US but for FA as Indian.

A note of caution - Asian males in US have some of the worst admission outcomes. So in some cases being from India is much better.

congrats Mrinal!
thinks will be a tad more easier for you! :)

@idream, when are you going for EPGY?

@texaspg, is it so?
(your note of caution)

rew, my course starts on July 16th! I’m so excited
What are your plans for summer?

yes - an example would be a full pay for Stanford from India vs a fullpay Indian from US with similar qualifications.

idream, i got into EPGY last summer, but didnt attend it. Low FA provided.
I got a 15 days summer holiday which i utilized preparing for my School exams which started the day school opened and learnt french.
gosh, i hate my school.

I just read my last post over. lol. Sorry Mrinal for the Menial thing, Auto-Correct sucks.

Umm, I should get a green card in a couple of weeks. Basically, its my mother’s company sponsoring us so think that should work out.
That is not a big deal I think, except that more colleges are need blind for me. :)

How long ago did they file the paperwork to sponsor?
