The Indian Thread #21

He can! If he has good grades and EC’s and one should not let go off their spirit whatever happens. And yes, he can always retake.

2080 is not a bad score. It obviously isn’t something that will stand out in his application, but if he manages to compensate it with rigorous academics, stellar EC’s and some great essays, he definitely stands a chance at the top schools. If he has performed well academically, throughout his four years at high school, the slightly low score will just be an indicator of his test taking skills.

Hey guys, help me out a bit.
I have to give me subject sats in Oct, well one of them anyway.

So that leaves me with the Nov test date if I wanna retake sat1.
Would you’ll reccomend -especially idream, and mrinal
If I should consider act in September instead?

North, I think you should definitely consider taking ACT but unfortunately the September testing date is available only for students taking it in the US. I’m not sure if you’re a domestic applicant, though? If you are eligible, definitely take it in September. You never know, you may end up performing a lot better on it than you did on the SAT. The October date isn’t too bad, either. You will still be able to apply early to some universities.

Most Ivy League colleges accept November scores.

Speaking of the ACT, share your test scores??

Wait, idream, what do you mean by domestic applicant? I’m a citizen, so does that mean I can give it in September?

The ACT September test is only administered in the US. Anyone can take it provided he’s in the US at that point of time.

@aditya - Oh. hen unfortunately no, for me. :P

So, who all finalised their list of colleges?

Not even started narrowing it down honestly :P

Me me…I am done :D

Hello to all!
My brother, an aspiring '17er, just got back his ACT scores. He has a composite score of 34, with 35 in English and Science, 34 in Math and 32 in Reading. To complement this he also has a SAT score of 2150 (760M, 690CR and 700W). Both scores are first attempts. Is a retake required for being a competitive applicant to the likes of Harvey Mudd, CMU, Cornell, Stanford and UC Berkeley? Responses are appreciated.

On a side note, it looks like I am headed to Georgia Tech come August.

Raptor, it depends on the rest of his application. Assuming it’s strong, a retake wouldn’t be necessary. Also, his ACT score trumps his SAT score. So send just the first one?

Also, congratulations on Georgia Tech! I have quite a few friends going there this year.

Thanks Tizil!
He has mediocre grades (about 80% till class XII), but has some great EC’s.
Grade 7 qualified on the classical guitar from the trinity guild hall (Pursuing grade 8), winner of a few math competitions, writes for the school magazine (Editorial board president) and was a state level skater till grade 10, so hoping that he makes it someplace good.

Congratulations to you for UC Berkeley! I know a good number of people from the place you were before the place you are at now (If this makes any sense :D).

I haven’t narrowed down my list either.
It’s like, mrinal is already done with 80% of college admission pre-requisites ( SATs, ACTs, narrowing down colleges, Essays etc)

Hey guys, when does one fill up the CSS App ( that’s FA one), or like, when is its usual deadline?

@raptor, was ur brother a speed skater or figure?

Sent from my U20i using CC

I wouldn’t say 80% is mediocre, but what can I say, my friends feel that 92% in the XII boards are mediocre :o

Is your brother taking a gap year? If so, just as a heads up, most colleges do require gap year students to explain what they did during the time. Seeing that your brother still has quite a few chances to take the ACT, he definitely should if he feels he can improve it. I mean, there’s always a point when people say that scores don’t matter but towards the very end, when you have ample chance and can use it to improve upon something, I say go for it! Especially since he has taken the ACT only once :)

I nderstood that statement in its entirety :p

@Crystal31 My brother was into speed skating and eventually went on to play state level Rollo Hockey.

@Tizil7 This year it seems anything below 93-95% in the boards is being looked down at. My brother is currently in grade 12 and has no plans for taking a gap year, instead it is I who took one, for playing national level tennis tournaments :D. Will only push for a retake after november, if he finds some free time. Right now am pushing him to do well in his school exams. And finally, thanks for not only taking time to answer my queries, but for being a problem solver for most of the other members as well :).

I am atheist, had I not been one, I would venerate Tizil for being such a bijou.

Going overboard with the praise? :p

I hardly ever visit these forums now and also, there are some amazing people here who know much more than me. Anyway, back to the point.

Are any of you also considering applying to the UK?
