The Indian Thread #21

Thanks fall2016parent for the detailed answer! I am doing undergrad now. The engineering program at my college doesn’t allow electives or inter-disciplinary subjects…only engineering subjects…while students at other programs in the college get to take whatever they want!!! This is really a negative point for me, because I am not yet sure if I want to continue with engineering. What type of engineering did you study?

Of course :)

@orangeflower - I would suggest you talk to an advisor asap. Maybe the college of engineering has different criteria. What engineering are you studying? If computer science, usually you can do a CS as part of liberal arts/science curriculum as well. And you can skip out of some of the Engineering classes. But I would suggest you talk to your advisor before you transfer out. Take the initiative, dont be hesitant to bother folks, the secretaries who work there…and even a fellow graduate student…to get your answers.

Anyone submit their apps yet ?

@mrinal
What should I do to strengthen my chances at berkeley?

Yes, my college’s engineering program has different requirements than the rest of the college. I am not going to transfer out yet, because I am no sure if I want to stay in engineering. Anyway, thanks a lot for all the advice!!!

Hello Everyone.
I’m an Indian student and I’ve applied to the following universities for fall '13. Undergrad. Major- Computer Science
Carnegie Mellon
UC Berkeley
UC San Diego
UIUC
GeorgiaTech
UMichigan
University of Southern California
UT Austin
Purdue
U of Minnesota
U of Wisconsin, Madison
VirginiaTech
SUNY Bufallo (Scholarship chance)
UT Dallas (Scholarship chance)
Although I dont really have an financial problems.

I just wanted to know when the admission results come out or when the applicant is notified whether he is admitted or not, for the given universities. No Early Decision. But I went for Early Action in all the universities which offered. All the documents are complete as well.

Thanks a lot.

^it depends for different colleges.
Why dont you check out their websites?
it usually comes out around the last week of march or the first week of april.

Yeah I checked. The dates are not that far away, since I did EA.
Thanks

All the best everyone! :)

I want to get into upenn’s Wharton school for undergraduate program . I’m in 12th standard currently. (Maharashtra state board ) I got 92 in 10th. Was the head boy. Won many debates elocutions and personlaity contests throughout school life. I’m also a cricket commentator. I’ve even had a stint in the Indian premier league. You might be able to hear me again In this edition on tv or on all india radio. I actively do community service and part of quite a few NGOs. I’m writing a fictional novel , it’s about half complete. Should be complete by June next year. I also have a business model which im going to implement after my 12th (in march 13). It’s social entrepreneurship where we make money and help people. I expect to get in 80-90 range in 12th standard. Any chances of me getting in ? I’ll be send my application in November 13, which will give me enough time to study for my SATs and polish up my resume. Have we got any Wharton Indians in this forum ? So people, what do you think ? Waiting for your replies.

Please help… I need to give in the UC App. I’m a commerce student, and I don’t know how to add Subjects such as ‘Business Studies’ and ‘Accountancy’ to the subject list.

Submitted Purdue, Buffalo, Richmond. What about you guys?

@User22. I am a humanities student. I added Economics and Sociology as ‘Electives’. You can do the same. Select Electives, then enter the course name.

I have 90+ in my 9th and 10th and I expect the same in 12th. But my 11th and 12th half sem marks are absolutely terrible !!! As I had thought of going for the Jeee earlier , I didn’t care squat about 11th. And during 12th half sem, I had go out for a cricket commentary gig in delhi. I was always under the impression that only 10th and 12th are counted. I’m also very confident I’ll get a good score in SATs. What do I do ? :frowning: can it be covered up in explanations ? I write fiction , I can cook up a pretty good story :stuck_out_tongue: can it be covered ?

@Shreyasmanohar ask your teacher/counselor to mention that in your recommendations. The scenario is same for most indian schools. Most Indian teachers don’t care about the scores of home examinations and hence students are left with despicable 70-75% in home exams even if they are bound to get 90%+ in board examinations. This is a major flaw in Indian schools, at least where I’ve studied. I’m going through the same situation as yours. BTW what’s your novel about?

hey thunderboltsid.
i applied to USC as of now. may withdraw the app. it’s so imperfect and the essays were written at the last minute. so well. yeah.
how are you standardized testing and grades?

@thunderboltsid so then i shouldnt consider it a major problem ? thats a real relief. I’m actually writing the synopsis i’m supposed to send to penguin this week and its reaaaaly long ! :stuck_out_tongue: the title is, How to bring world peace with a little* violence . contrary to the name, it isnt an actual guide. genre is suspense-crime-comedy. full on bollywood style ;)

Well, I’m still stuck with recommendations and my school is being lethargic. It’s not an awful school per se, but apparently no one has ever applied to universities based on holistic application review processes. More academic based, and in 12th limited to board exams ‘demand’. Also, no one really cares about you in 12th, however they seem to show they do. But I digress, so here’s the point. They (with the exception of my English teacher, more on than later in the post) want me to write my recs myself, saying that I know myself best, which is obvious. Now if this was some random university, I wouldn’t have cared, but I’m applying to MIT (and Princeton and UChicago). My chances are pretty much nil, but nevertheless I’m applying. And I want my application to be genuine and honest. The self-part would be, but writing my own recs is a big no-no. And even if I somehow convince them to write, I am pretty sure it’s going to be the generic stuff that everyone loathes. I got my English teacher and supervisor to write the Humanities one, but it was generic as well.

These are all teachers who have taught me within the last two years though. I undoubtedly shared a stronger bond with my teachers in 8th, 9th and 10th grade but I’ve changed completely as a person in two years (polar opposite would be accurate). One of them is our house incharge and I’m the House Captain and she knows me very well. Don’t know though, if they have remembered relevant anecdotes as well over time. Is this the way to go? Or I’d be better off getting recs from senior teachers? Also, does it really matter (despite what they say on their website) that I’m pursuing the same subject in uni as the teachers writing the recs teach? I’ve a great impression on both of my Computer Science teachers (presumably a relevant anecdote or two as well, although it is likely they’d ask me to write it myself as well), but I’ve no plans to pursue formally computer science in uni.
