The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

hey merc-> I think aakash sent his duke application on the eve of the deadline (and thats where he is right now).
Aaksh if you can please give me a date when we can IM on yahoo.

UPenn session was crap as prophecized by aakash. but well I was in the city so.

And people is there anyone applying to UK whats the finaid scenario there.

okey so lots of discussion abt being focussed and choosing the right college… so lets have a poll here…

All u ppl (incl. seniors) give 5 gud names for engineering colleges and Universities ( not considering the ivy tag or anything) … that excel in the study and engineering programs…

I would go with the following:-

MIT (of course)
Carniege Mellon (Its Computer Engg Rocks, excellent research)
Michigan (Godd in all Engg departments specially Aeronautics and Mechanical)
Georgia Tech (Electrical & Computer Engg are really good. Its research is also awesome)
Stanford (another biggie in engineering)

I dunno much about UC Berkeley and Illinois UC so can’t say much about them. Nevertheless, the above 5 have really really good engineering departments.

Aid also important Dex. Carneige :no AID, Georgia Tech : No AId, Stanford : No Aid, Michigan : No AId …others join in with ur 5 universities for engineering

a few more…

Ohio State Univ
Arizona State Univ
Iowa State Univ
Rochester Institute of Tech

This way there are Illinois Institute Of technology and lots more. i mean reputed eng .schools…with aid

sm-> dude what exactly do u want…beats me. I mean do you want us to write the names of schools already there in your list or do you want additional school. and btw ohio state university is very reputed.

dude the ones I’ve mentioned are pretty reputed. U kno what, the most reputed ones are the Ivies of course, but they are not as good at engineering. Then there are the popular public univerisities(like Michigan, Georgia, etc) which hardly give out any aid to intels. Then there are these, which i have just mentioned. These are highly respected univeristies and possess a very good engineering departments and they do give aid.

and yeah if we are having a chat why dont we post more frequently.

i just want names of gud eng universities all of us like…

And dexter i did not mean that …actually i meant somethig else…
neways yaaa…u ppl continue with ur choices. just checking out on gud schools … Not nething to do with my list…really vampiro

so why not… okey what is the aid scene at Ohio state and how many indians go there…???

i dunno about how many intels go there…but 3 of my school students went there and they all got 60% + aid…my counselor also tells me that it has a good aid scene…

coollllll man and what do they expect of applicants with aid. like sats and ecs…

yeah I want to know that too
and as guys from your school got in you can maybe give their stats

vampiro-I havent IMd on Yahoo since I have come here and nor do I plan to in the near futre-maybe sometime after december 20.

and yes,I did complete 11 apps on the night of Jan1.

good thing i didn’t attend the upenn session
thanks akash
:-)

okay, a few Qs:

How are JHU, Dartmouth, Yale & Brown for Computer Science? JHU is 21 on the US News list fro Undergrad Comp Sc. I don’t know abt Brown, Dartmouth and Yale cuz the US News list I have only goes upto 21. Mercurysqaud, you were saying something about how Yale sucks for Engg?

I know how colleges look for Intl. Olympiads and stuff. But what if I didn’t know about them till this year? Our school doesn’t participate much. The first time I participated in one (the Informatics Olympiad), I made it to the national round where I came 8th. Should I tell the colleges this?

I can say that Dartmouth is very good for comp sci / engg. (Come on, the BASIC language was created here!).

Yale is bad for engg from what I hear.

Brown / JHU - so so I think but dont rely on me.

Has anybody applied to Oxford from here? Do you know if they take interviews? They told me interviews are only for second-time unergrads.

I’m a bit late on this, but I haven’t been keeping up with the thread for the last couple of weeks…

Someone posted a couple of pages ago about Brown as a backup with aid… I’m at Brown this year and as far as I know only five ppl from India got in in my year… and none of them got aid… I’d reconsider your back-ups if I were you…
