No… I dont know much about the loan thing… But yes, for loans taken from US sources, the interest rates fluctuates every month I guess.

dexter87 “believe that if i am earning, it’ll be a greater burden on me to repay my parents contribution as soon as possible than to repay the banks”
dude u are aware ull have to mortgage property when it comes to abank…
n talking about repaying your parents… atleast u wont have to give them interest…

im for RD too.

how many of you have given ur TOEFL??? I havent even registered yet…am i too late…willl there be trouble for me???

sachit its all about luck, u know i registered for toefl on 16th sept i got a date of sept 21st and the next one was in nov 25 onwards…there were no dates in October…i was unsure of giving toefl so early…so i asked my friends n all and they told me to go for the sept date…when i went back to the site later that night, the sept dates were gone!!..i was forced to register for the nov 25th date…u can try the ETS website to get an earlier date…but theres no garuntee…in delhi theres a huge rush so the dates get filled up in a blink

I wont be giving the toefl until i deem it absolutely necessary…neways…really u ppl are like going mad abt app. u must be calm while working… rushing things causes loss of quality…

And nice remark Prachi… and abduke… i agree totally

how many of us are actualy 18 at the time of applying .most are yet to complete within 9-10 months … btw . . . so i am not elligible for an intel loan

hey rishabh

cud u offer some details on how ur cousin got into UCB with a full scholarship? I though Berkeley didn’t have any aid for internationals!

thanks
p.s. - i’m not attending the upenn session now. and yes i’m applying to brown.

btw ppl tell me how do the greatest of gr8 applicants get admitted only at either Harvard or Princeton or yale or maybe even Stanford and MIt

Is it that there is mutual agreement and sharing betwen these top schools over not to accept common students coz they never accept the same applicant…

I mean do these univ share their their acceptances and select unique students…like if 1 is accepted at harvard he wont be at Yale or princeton…

Of course there are cross admits at all these universities. And no, universities don’t share their RD admit lists. (This is why it was a big deal when some one at the Princeton admissions office hacked into the Yale website)
This is also why the matter of yield and preference and all the stuff that Byerly talks about is important (to the universities atleast).

but why is the no. so less. why most get admitted at only 1 of thses top ones

guys one lame question to ask…i have written my SOP seperately and many of the colleges essays require some (if not all) parts of it…my question is can i copy paste it in the college essay ??..u don’t send your SOP seperately in the “Extra material” you send to the college right??

yes u can :)

so you dont send the SOP seperately in the application package??

u can …ur wish

Intl admissions is generally even more competitive than domestic admissions. You have to be very very exceptional to be admitted at say both Harvard and Yale and Princeton since admissions at even one of them is a crapshoot at best. Not too many applicants are exceptional enough to be accepted at all three though they might just about make it into one.

1) I concur with abduke - its not worth taking a one crore loan, even for a HYP education, cuz there really isn’t a lot of difference between the average starting salary of an MIT grad and a state school grad. Loans are a big liability in any form and minimizing it should be anyone’s biggest priority (as I am realizing now). And ICICI is crap btw.

2) Is it too late for apps/essays? Heh… I remember abduke, hello and me doing an all-nighter on Jan 1st… I did 5 apps, hello did 3 I think and don’t even ask me about abduke, his was in double digits I reckon.

LOL Start now! :p

oh oh…
How the truce? :D

phy midterm tomorrow

btw rishabh - yours is a typical college list. i made the same mistake.
i dont see why yale is your #4 (?) choice when MIT is #1… yale is considered very bad for engg. and MIT is considered not-too-good for everything else. ![]()
I advise you to be more focussed.:)

i think that mercurysquared makes a very valid point in that sometimes extremely high loans for a HYP education may not be worth it…

my dad attended IIT in Kanpur some years back and then proceeded to apply to U.S colleges much like many of you are doing now. while he got into schools like princeton, he chose instead to go to the university of arizona. while this may seem like a crazy decision (i know i have thought along the same lines many times before) it was also a wise decision financially because he ended up getting a full ride as well as extra money to support his family, etc. furthermore, now twenty years after college, he seems to be doing just fine…probably just as well as he would have done with an Ivy League education.

basically my two cents is those that are qualified for an ivy league school are going to be fine no matter where they end up, so an immense debt due to trying to pay for HYP may not be worth it.

guys let me clear out that i WASN’T talking about taking a crore as a loan…I just wanted to share with you that if your loan amount exceeds $20K per year, you seriously jeopardize your chances of getting in…so the max loan that one can or should take should be less that Rs 35 lacs for 4 years. And even if i take a loan between Rs20-30 lacs, iam confident that the college for which iam taking the loan will make me eligible enough to repay it…

Mercurysquad i totally agree with you that many people run after the “Ivy Tag” despite of the fact that apart from Cornell and Princeton, all Ivies suck at engineering. People who want to do engineering should look at engineering rankings of colleges and not their national rankings. If one is against rankings, then he/she should look at the reputation of the college’s engineering department.
