i had an interview for brown… it was more of an informational interview for me… thats how it is meant to be… dont know about the other ivys though… there is a post by one of the interviewers in teh brown thread… ill post it hree… for your convenience

Hello aspiring Brownies,
I am writing to try to ease some fears about the alumni interview process. I am a class of 2004 Brown alum and an interviewer so hopefully you will believe me on the following.
I am Daniel_Rothman@Brown.edu/email

To answer the questions about the alumni interviews:
Everyone is automatically assigned to a regional alumni coordinator who will then pass along the profile to an alum interviewer. Sometimes the interviewer is just too busy (I am in the middle of grad school applications myself and had a hard time fitting in my applicant interviews). Some coordinators do a better job then others and will pick up the extra kids but if there are few alums in your area it might be hard.
Brown instructs us that the interviews are almost entirely informational, and for the benefit of the applicant. (if you are an ax wielding maniac they want to know) I take the time to get to know the kid and figure out what I can tell them about Brown. Being a recent graduate I consider myself quite well informed and just try to be helpful. Last year I interviewed this one kid who I thought was absolutely fantastic and he got waitlisted. I even followed up with admissions on his behalf trying to get him in but he ended up not getting in so went to UPENN instead. There is truth to what the admissions people say, that they could fill three complete freshmen classes with only well qualified applicants. At all top tier schools these days it comes down to if they need a tuba playing Civil Engineer or a karate black belt/English major or if they already have four of each. An important thing to remember is that the college application process is about finding the right school for you. If you dont get in here but do get in to NYU or Haverford or Tufts or UCSD or any of hundreds of good schools it is not the end of the world and indeed you may find yourself quite happy there.

I loved Brown and am thrilled that so many of you out there do as well. I do not want to be mobbed with people telling me their SATs and GPAs and asking if they have a chance, I wont know that anyway. If you have applied and werent contacted by an alumni interviewer and would like to learn more about Brown send me an e-mail to the above address and I will try to help. (my own applications are due 12/15 so I will have more time to answer questions after that.)
If you get in make sure to come to ADOCH (a day on college hill) in the spring, it was lots of fun.

if there hasnt been any change this year, the pton interviewer will call you. there isnt anything you have to do for the interviewer. and although im not sure why, i heard that not all applicants get the interview. maybe only the ones at the maybe level get one, or the good ones only, or maybe just because they have and alum living close by.

i dont know if thats very true, i didn’t get an interview myself and about brown, its an excellent school, and you should def. apply there. and radhika, who was your interviewer?

i think we actually dont need a school profile… for the very reason that all important info wud be on the recos and counselor wud address them… also what is properely called school profile is not appliable to Indian Students and school also… I am still sceptic of what help cud a few pages from prespectus do …
Since my applications are already going to be way bulky … i am not gonna send it…also my counselor has made sure relavent info stays on the transcripts and his reco. so no prob

just thought id throw this out there-
did u guys come across the world ranking by the Times (not the Times of India…)
they basically ranked the univs of the world (top 100 i think)
what did ya’ll make of that list?

Duke was 11th on that btw…
ronty- i dunno about the pm u sent me… send it again.

also- do ya’ll know anyone who applied early to duke this year and go in?

No offense meant to i’llbeback, but IMHO, Duke doesn’t deserve to be at 11. I mean, even if you take HYPSM, Oxford, Cambridge, Berkeley, Caltech, Cornell, LSE etc. how can Duke be 11th? There are a lot of schools better than Duke - definitely more than 10. And IIRC, USNews ranked Duke 5th nationwide. Crazy fellas!

BTW, I’m sending\have sent a school profile.

Ok, all ya ppl. Tell me, to schedule an interview for brown, pton, harvard, upenn etc. do I need to fill up Part 1 of their applications? I already had my MIT interview (w/out filling up Part 1) but I dunno about these schools. I’m waiting for my Stanford EA decision before submitting the part 1s of other colleges (because Part 1 means paying $$$). Although I doubt that I’ll get into Stanford early but I’m hoping anyway. So whaddya say? Can I schedule an interview right away?
