i guess that if its comp science which is more software oriented then i will have to switch my major after the first year…i am more intrested in software developing…

Comp Engineers face stiff competition from Elec Engineers unlike the Computer Science graduates, whose job is more software based. Also there r more jobs in Software development and service area

I think many colleges have converted the Electrical Engineering major into Electrical and computer engineering, probably for this reason and because they probably overlaps in certain areas.

yeah its kinda weird…the course content of ECE and Comp Sc is almost the same and yet they are classified as two different fields…i mean in a way, ECE graduates should be considered better than Comp Sc graduates 'cause they are taught the hardware and the software part of computers whereas comp sc ppl only dig into softwares…however the comp sc grads are given priorty …still baffles me no end…

Comp Sci ppl r master in one field… ECE graduates r jack of all trades but master of none…mayb this is the reason

i guess i am not really convinced by that…

ronty’s right. In your four years of comp science, you’ll only be working on comp science. So you’ll basically end up as an expert. However, in ECE - R u sure that software’s involved in ECE? I thought it was only hardware - if software is there, then it’s only to a limited extent. So you have slightly above average knowledge of the subject. Nothing spectacular.

Hardware Industry isnt as hot as the software one. Hardware industry needs a lot of capital too, unlike the software industry.

Precisely!

hi everybody…

new here…

got into rutgers the other day… :)

Welcome…

actually…I’m new here too…

Welcome and congrats to Angel of Death
R u an Indian Citizen?

Lakshya, r u an applicant for the class of 2011?

“MM i was quite shocked to see so much difference between the highest salaries of a graduate in Comp Engg and one in Comp Science…i mean how come Comp science ppl are able to earn $50K MORE than comp engineers?? i know i am kinda contradicing my previous statement of not believing in numbers but still…why are com science ppl paid more??”

Just couldn’t help notice…so first of all…more money in comp science because thats where the world is going…ok now see what you have to understand is that computer science was always a field based on things which we wanted to do in the future…Artificial Intelligence is an excellent example…now in the past few years people had confused computer science with software engineering and as you will see at that time the people of comp engg were makin a lot more money than the actual computer guys…Now computer Science is not writing carappy tiny bits of sowtware for MNC’s its about making stuff that does not exceed…its about working on problems which haven’t had any good solution yet (and making an uncrashable version of windows does not count)…computer science is about making the perfect artificial intelligence…its about making the perfect encryption and also a perfect polymorphism program… Now all this was not possible to do earlier because of the ****ty hardware and resources present but now that the hardware and technology has been produced (in short "now the other technologies have caught up with computer science) the time has finally arrived when we can start utilising the advancement in science and technology and dream about making the perfect AI…the time to secure our data has come(as everything is now online…and by online i mean on the computers)…so now the big players the people with pure raw logic are getting the big cash…coz its their time now…and in 10 years you cannot even imagine the advancements comp sci is going to make…and its too damn difficult to handle for anyone who has never had experience of it or does not have the passion for it…thats why you see a large variation in comp sci salaries…so another suggestion here is that if computers is not your life dont even think about doing computer science and spoiling your careers…any confusions i might write something more…but for now its getting too monotonous…so cya

“i guess that if its comp science which is more software oriented then i will have to switch my major after the first year…i am more intrested in software developing…”

if u r interested in software development i think u have to stay in com engg. and just concentrate your courses in developing languages courses…dude software making is not that big deal which we make of it…its a very teeny weeny part of computers and there isnt anything called software engg…so u simply just concentrate your courses in computer languages and OS to join that in the future…you’ll need comp engg also coz u have to know about various hardware platforms if u wanna be a complete developer.

Yeah, I’m an applicant of 2011.

About Computer Science. What exactly do you do when you’re majoring in Computer Science and how is it different from software development?

WELL…think about computers and for once go away from software…there is a whole lot beyond hardware that goes within these computers…

Say for example web designing wud be a part of comp sc not comp eng …

comp sc. includes things are far more valuable than comp eng because of the basic nature of the job and skills… as the name does really suggest , comp sc is a science and comp eng more techie sort hardy engineering…

rest if u do feel scared off at ur lower or higher prospects , u may want to do a double in comp sc and eng both… But funny wud be to actually do that

SM

a friend of mine from my class got into HMC . . . didnt have GREAT credentials though . .

a mech guy is the most versatile id say , he can get into any field he wants . .

here comes the sat results day and once again the Indian Thread is graced by the gracious presence of Rishab…

Joking…

Btw the one acceptance from India this year makes even bigger of a reason now to not even consider applying HMC as no way ever wud they admit 2 Indian in the international pool of 4 students :):)
