The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

absolutely . . but this dude didnt ask for any aid . . so does that count ?

p.s. im not feeling all that confident about my chem SAT score this time . .
need help need help :P

i wish i was kidding about that

asking or not asking for aid… at HMC among the 4 intels if a country is already represented no matter how, there wont be another admit from the country…

best of luck for all of the sat score awaitees …

SM

that dude must by lieing :@:@

what a thick skinned liar !
im gonna get him . . just 4 intels. . . and he ? :-o

joking

hahahaha

“web designing wud be a part of comp sc”
comeon SM web designing aint even a science.

Why is HMC being made into such a big deal? Its an LAC and that is why it accepts less number of students. Even when you compare this college to the other LACs there are quite a few that are way better.

thanks…

yes…

Guys, I was also wondering about your class rank in your major at your college. I mean, how important do you think it is? Which would be better (for the same major: being in the bottom 20% at MIT or being in the top 10% at some random LAC, state college. I’ve heard both sides of the story

Your opinions please…

hey dude…class rank eh…well bottom 20% students at MIT are better than many students at many universities so i think there is much to the name…but it depends…the companies dont neccesarily take the highest GPA fellow there are a lot of other things like research, internships, co-ops ,interviews and what not.

**
TiT is on fire.
**

**
TiT is full with LiFE!

Did the Boards start so early?
**

.

*~vampiro : “coz its kind of a ritual for every student to blame their school authorities…and it is one of my personal favourites…” *

Not mine, despite my being from a Govt School.
The Indian education system has it’s limitations, as Prachi had pointed out on Ronty’s website. (I cannot find the link to that page though. Ronty, where did it go?). But successful is the one who makes the best and most out what is available instead of wasting off in blame game competitions.

*~abduke : “Upenn actually sent out letters to people at my school telling them they would be admitted if they didnt ask for aid …” *
**
I too got such a letter, but I cannot go without a generous financial aid package, and hence their words will have less impact on my financial needs and financial aid application.

Does anyone think that it will be futile to expect UPenn to provide FinAid to Intells?**

~MM : "I sympathize with guys who apply for aid.

**Thanks for that, MM.
Many need Financial Aid, not sympathy.
**

*~sachit : “gr8 discussion goin on here!! MM, tell us more abt da ambanis
nd who all here r givin da boards?? cuz it luks like none of us r…” *

Sachit, artfulness and brevity makes those as two of the best jokes on the thread.

*~rocketDA : "something else that is interesting…
<a href="http://hseagle.sas.edu.sg/hscounseling/College/phds.htm"[/i]“>http://hseagle.sas.edu.sg/hscounseling/College/phds.htm”*</a></p>

I always knew that CalTech was better than MIT for a lot of things and for a lot facilities and resources. Thanks rocketDA for that piece of information and link.
As the icing on the cake, CalTech Faculty have the highest citations globally. If this year they accept three Indians from here on TiT, CalTech students are going to be the highest cited innovators of tomorrow. I can assure that with an arrogant absoluteness. (Else, TiTans go to MIT. Got it? )

*~Prachi : “y would an individual give millions to a uni. if he didnt want anything back…obviosly its a form of a business deal… more like an underhand business deal…
what abt those guys who deserved to go into wharton but couldnt coz other ppl who can bribe their way into it took all the seats?? this is similar to how things work in India n how many time have u not cursed the government for corruption???n if a place like wharton does it then it changes to a good thing!!hahaha” *

**“Smart” points there, my lady.

Ever wondered why all the Royalty and aristocracy of England went to Oxbridge? Check out the college names under them. Ever wondered why individuals donate millions to universities? Maybe it’s their alma mater, or it is going to be their kid’s. Ever wondered how meanings and interpretations changes our perceptions alongwith terminology? Corruption becomes donation, grants become assistance and donkeys become doctors.
**

*~Adides : " i see that you still are very much… a gujju (gujju pride man!) *

That is the first thing Adi is proud of, second is Princeton. The pride that goes before a ride.

~vampiro : “now see what you have to understand is that computer science was always a field based on things which we wanted to do in the future…Artificial Intelligence is an excellent example.”

**And now, how can I forgive myself for blasting that chance to meet Prof Rodney Brooks sometime ago? (And now, how to put an Emoticon here with a frown? )

But forgiveness was always an innate trait of mine i*. And I hope to make up for a missed opportunity in the days ahead. **

~vampiro : “and in 10 years you cannot even imagine the advancements comp sci is going to make.”

**Logic needs speed and algorithm to churn things out. I hope that you consider the Second postulate of the Church-Turing thesis.

Also in need of consideration in the context maybe is Moore’s Law postulated in his publication “Cramming more components onto integrated circuits”, Electronics Magazine 19 April 1965.
Ref :

 • Alan Turing : “On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem”, Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, Series 2, 42.
 • Gordon Moore : “Cramming more components onto integrated circuits”, Electronics Magazine 19 April 1965.

On the question of Computer Science & Computer Engg, the former being more of a science type with logic, optmisation and it’s mathematical application projected onto to algorithms and the latter being an engineering involving hardware, software and making the both meet & mate with each other.**

~vampiro :1. "well bottom 20% students at MIT are better than many students at many universities
2. “there are a lot of other things like research, internships, co-ops ,interviews and what not.”

**Well my friend, plausibly-
1 = Partially Wrong : The top 9.6% students at many universities are going to equal, or may even better, many students from MIT, esp the bottom 20%.
2 = Deterministically Correct : Are not the other things that makes a person not just another engineer but a Technocrat? **

**
Forever,

SHABIN
**

.

whoa shabin dude how much time did it take to write that down…
when did u miss a chance to meet rodney brooks…I love his Cog…thats where i want to work on at MIT…That guy is like totally awesome…dide he ever come to India…

Yes…I mentioned him in my MIT essays :p

Dude, seriously, I don’t think it matters. The best engineers, innovators, musicians, artists, writers, business masterminds, political leaders, [insert your favorite proffesion here] don’t necessarily go to the best colleges in the world.

But yeah, if you’re asking from a purely monetary perspective, i.e. what will get you a better (read higher-paying) job, then I think being in the bottom 20% at MIT is better than being in the top 10% at some random LAC. FWIW, I also think that being in the bottom 20% at MIT is harder than the LAC top 10%.

Don’t know about Rodney Brooks, but Andrew Viterbi (founder of Qualcomm & inventor of the Viterbi algorithm used for error-correction in cell phones) came to my school to give a lecture and I wasn’t even told about it. God, I hate my school for that :(

wel… anyways for sum time lets screw these topics for the time of the year when things heat up is here again.

SAT results are gonna be out and ppl are going crazy to get them…
since i havent given any of those stupid exams i can take this opportunity to say all of you…::::::

Best of Luck

may all of you get ur best scores ever…

SM

and seriously shabin … lighten up and be calm with posts…

I have said this before and wud say again. what u did was crazy … Its certainly not right or cool to take in comments like this and giv ur contradictions … u can do so in many other ways… but dude what are u upto . i mean common this aint a fight… u pick on each comment every 3 days or so and start comenting… not appreciated …

Infact if i am allowed to be a little blunt , i wud say dude i didnt understand what u were trying to say … not for the subject matter or contents but the way u were trying to say … and prove sumthing…

SM

:)

^^^ Besidest that, SHABIN, some simple english please! This isnt some crazy english thesis. You should calm down and save your philosophy for later. And stop using complex vocab. It’s not gonna achieve anything, especially if you think it makes you look cooler. It just makes you irritating.

I thought that I was the only one who had problem reading his English…Thanks MM for joining me :D

In fact, you’re almost as irritating as this guy: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=124174&highlight=manofmanyfaces</a></p>

But I think we should all calm down and leave this topic here only.
 Cheers :)
