The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

the intel science fair incorporates ideas in almost any category. Im not going to tell you what I came up with, but be warned, that it should be very scientific. Something like," The dynamics of nanotubes, inserted laterally up a pyschologically stable individual’s synergestic tube".
(Nanotubes stuck up a ■■■■■■■■ blokes arse).

well vampiro-u look good, but then again,so do most Indian applicants;)

It all depends now on whether you need aid, what your recommendations and essays look at and certain other inexplicable factors.the school you come from is also a big factor…if it sends students abroad to the top colleges regularly,ur chances become greater

If you DONT need aid and ure applying to UPenn Engineering, then i think ull defintely get in,same for Duke,Cornell,WUSTL and Brown. This is of course,if u write goodish essays.Columbia and Dartmouth,I think, might be good too.

Warning though,im basing this advice on seeing the profiles of the people who got into the places from my school this year and the previous one.I cud be wrong.

Purdue, u r definetly getting into-good safety school…no finanical aid though-all they give is a merit schol of 13K

I think ull easily get into Georgia tech,UT Austin and Texas AM-hoever im not sure if they give financial aid…

the rest on your list -MIT,Stanford,Caltech,Princeton,and Yale-are a tossup.Nobody can predict who can get in.But I say that u have as good a chance as any of the best applicants from India.

MIT,Yale,Harvard and Princeton are need-blind.However due to this reason, among others, they have the strongest applicant pool, the largest number of applications, etc etc.So its a crapshoot for even the best.

as for the MIT interview,I think its safe to say that all of us who got interviewed didnt like our interview at all

People also study this case. I am applying to Stanford with aid. This reduces my chances. But then I am applying SCEA which usually increases one’s chances a little. So where do you think I stand overall in the process.Do I have a chance.
I was kinda hoping if anyone could give some info regarding taking out loans to meet full educational costs in the US (I’ll do that if I seem to have a good chance of gettin in without aid).
Thanks

P.S. When will the common app 2006 be ready any ideas.

is that mesg a twin?

common app july 1st

Hey havaldaar i was trying to ask you a contact of a person who i should contact for the Intel thing so Can you please do that for me.

And why didn’t you guys like the interview. There has to be a reason.

P.S. I hope I don’t have to interview with that ■■■■■■■ Vinay Rai.Disgrace to MIT.

yes you do,but most probably you will be deferred to be considered in the regualr round with the rest of the aid applicants,so that they can figure out the best ppl to give aid to.But then, there was some talk abt Stanford going need-blind for intls this year…not sure though.

abt loans-im not really clued up on this one,but u shud take out loans in US(u need a US citizen as a cosignor) as the interest rates are much lower.

Also,Im not saying that u cant get in if u apply for aid, just that it becomes more tough and more random.

Abt the MIT interview-we can talk abt it in a PM or through Yahoo chat…

For INTEL-google their website for India-that has pretty much comprehensive info…

oh, ummm im not sure who to contact…
in school we used to just goto the physics teacher…

ok here’s my email

give yours or just add me.

Havaldar does the INTEL stuff have computer Science too coz that’s my Forte

Please don’t be under any misconception. Don’t waste your early app on Stanford, if you’ll be applying for aid. Early+aid+intl @ Stanford = sure shot rejection.

Wow those are pretty impressive stats Vampiro.

Also, about what Mercury Squad said earlier, I don’t think you should waste your early on Stanford. Try for a need blind place instead which is still a reach school (eg. Yale, Princeton, Harvard, etc.). I would tilt towards Yale since it’s early action and not decision (applied there early so i know, but not too sure of what Princeton’s policy is). Again, this depends on what you want to major in though if you’ve decided.

About the rest of your schools, purdue is a sure shot. They practically take all indians (I know a guy who applied to Rutgers early, with legacy, paying full, new jersey state resident, who got rejected from rutgers but got into purdue). So that shouldn’t be a problem, especially with your stats.

Of the IVY’s Cornell should be the easiest to get into, and then maybe Dartmouth. The rest will be a lot tougher, but you should get into a couple of the others also. Sounds like the rest of your list is makeable also, but again, the admission process is VERY random. So really can’t predict anything. But you are better then the average applicant so your chances are pretty high.

thanks people.I think I’ll go with Yale then coz that’s the only place that offers EA.
What are chances of aid at Purdue,UT austin,Texas A&M and GAtech

I know someone (nepali) who got in early though he applied for finaid…u shouldn’t make such sweeping statements, mercurysquad! though of course chances are slim slim slim… 10^(-x). where x>(u guess!)

well… i posted a response, but i edited it out… might spark even more debate. let the guy apply early to stanford. if he gets in as well, good for him. else - we told you so!

huh?

well as abduke pointed out- all ur safeties (probably) dont give aid to internationals. purdue is a brothel for indians- pay and your in.
id like to add a couple other colleges to that category, but id rather not offend people so ill keep quiet.

aid makes a big difference. dont be shocked to see someone with stats worse than yours waltz into an ivy that rejects you…

and how good is yale for engineering?? check out the rep for the college in your field, dont just go for prestige.

lastly, you dont want to come of as the typical indian geeky stereotype who loves maths and comps. try and be different. i tried all sorts of stunts in my app and essays and most of them worked (except RIce,damn you Rice!!!gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i put in so much effort into that stunt… oh well… im raving again i better stop)

and stanford says onits website that applying for finaid greatly reduces your chances… so merc’s not soo wrong.

Well I applied Stanford early, and got rejected.

IMO if you want aid at Stanford go for EA. They use up nearly 70% of their intl aid in that round, and they keep the remaining $$$ for superstars/interesting applicants that apply RD. Although most schools like to defer intl aid applicants to the RD round, I think Stanford is different. Maybe they value demonstrated interest, coz I know quite a few ‘normal’ applicants who got into Stanford early with aid.

And about the INTEL thing, if you havent heard of it yet, don’t bother. Things like RSI/INTEL/IMO/IOI etc. require lots of preparation and hard work. If you think you can do it, then give it a shot, but dont expect anything from it. Instead concentrate and spend more time on your essays, coz if you have the SAT scores the next most important thing are your essays. Like I’llbebeack said try and be different/interesting. But if you’re really really passionate about the sciences, dont be afraid to write about them, coz some of us nerds do get in :D

Hey i think i’ll do the research myself…
Man you guys are making me confused.
Thanks for the help anyway

ok no one has anything to say … how will this thread become huge
