Quotas for 49% IIT seats

New Delhi, April 5: The Union government has decided to implement reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) as per the Mandal formula for admission to Central educational institutions, including the IITs and IIMs, and also Central universities, including Delhi University.

The Mandal Commission report, which has already been in implementation for Central government jobs for more than a decade now, provides for 27 per cent reservation for OBCs. This will dramatically increase the quantum of reservation from the current 22.5 per cent to 49.5 per cent.

The Central government has taken the decision to implement reservation for OBCs as per the Mandal formula in all Central educational institutions, Union human resources development minister Arjun Singh said on Wednesday. We are just waiting for the elections to be over, he added. Mr Singh said the reservation would be implemented from the coming academic session itself, except in cases where the admission process was already underway.

Mr Singh confirmed that reservation for OBCs would be applicable for admission to all Central institutions, including IITs and IIMs. When asked whether this would extend to all Central universities, including Delhi University, the minister replied in the affirmative.

He said reservation in State government institutions would be left for the state governments to implement. This is a logical conclusion of the passing of the 104th Amendment Bill by Parliament recently, said Mr Singh.
According to the amendment, a State can make special provisions for advancement of social and educationally backward classes in educational institutions, including private ones other than minority institutions.

When asked whether the implementation could trigger a wave of protests, like what was seen in 1990 following the acceptance of the Mandal Commission report by the then V.P. Singh government, the HRD minister said, We do not want any social strife. We will consider any suggestions made on how to avoid such a situation, he said.

According to HRD ministry officials, the government is considering options like increasing the number of seats in IITs and IIMs so that the total number of seats for general category students remains the same.

holy sh it…

dude he shud go to stanford…NOTHING is better than stanford…

btw did he apply to MIT??

I dont think he applied to MIT… that was his complete list…

Also, i think hes taking princeton because he applied there early, got deferred, and then accepted… So im guessing it was his first choice…

About aid, i think he did apply for aid… But im not too sure on that point…

He had amazing stats though… He did the a levels and got 14 A’s… Amazing EC’s, recos etc… And his dad was a college counselor in bombay, so he probably knew what the colleges were looking for… Still pretty amazing though…
