The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

Research indicates that attendance at a well-known school does not appear to give any long-term advantage to students, at least as measured by incomes 20 years after they graduate. College counselors advise students to look for a school that offers the size and range of courses and activities they are looking for and not worry so much about where it ranks on the U.S. News & World Report list

yet why are we so stuck up on prestige here// ??

wow… wonderfull… wel it is true…

but well the brand that u give to ur highest degree of education is very important not as in 20 yrs down but as in many other aspects…
as of any other education prestige and brand can only be an extra and serve for no big other purpose…so well guys its just an UG education and we are yet to get down to real stufff …

also well yes even then prestige ant that important but still it is a governing factor for many startups and opporutnities… well things do become easy for a person who startted job after attending a harvard though success may not be dependant on the same…

long time . but nice to see you back on to CC, prachi… :)

SM

ull be surprised if u check the recruitment rates for intls in ivies/lesser know unis/LACs…

^^^Proof that good news isnt always good for everyone :)

i didnt get what you mean Biaxident… ??(man MM was so much cooler)

SM

lol. What I meant is that since I’m gonna be going to an ivy, I’d prefer being in a better position 20 years down the line than someone who went to a lesser known university.

same here!!..lol…anyways SM where did u read the UT Austin’s 10K fee rise?..pls provide the link…

ok, im new to this thread, so lemme get this right …
some of you guys here who have been living in the US for most of your life and r prolly in university right now are gonna give the IIT JEE exams to get into IIT for graduate studies? or transfer? or what?

is anyone here in High school and giving those exams?

or am i wrong, u guys r livin in india …?

we’re living in India…well see i would say that report is wrong…i mean sure it doesn’t matter 20 years down the line in some fields but in some other like Ibanking, consulting etc it does matter. For one the ibanks dont even recruit at top state univs, forget the lesser known. So your school does matter to give u a start , 20 yrs down the line its only your darn talent which gets u to places. I mean if u are just considering performance like 20 yrs down the line and personal achievements, then even going to a college is no better than doing stuff on your own, for eg if guy A is brilliant than guy B. Guy A can do pretty much anything without any college (think Bill Gates)…
Bottom Line , any institution is there to give you a head start early on and a job security, and thats where the ivies beat the rest of the colleges…

^ true.

And in any case, do you guys really think “20 years down the line” while choosing colleges? I would think more in terms of, “do I want to spend 4 years of my life here?”

to be a bit harsh as i am usually these days…
Such statements are just consolations to people who dont get in (and i am included)…nobody cares what the reason might be

my friend kshtij got accepted to cornell
shikhar saxena: after applying for finaid
shikhar saxena: and the @ssholes cancelled his finaid application

erm lala…we live in india…we’re taking the IIT exam coz any indian aspiring to be an engineer takes the exam…lol

cornell’s really stingy… last year a friend of mine was accepted was euphoric for two days and when he received his package there was zero fin aid… the guys twiddling his thumbs in banglore now… sad but true…

“ull be surprised if u check the recruitment rates for intls in ivies/lesser know unis/LACs…”
