quick question

is it better to send applications online??

I sent all my applications online - saves the time, trouble and money involved in DHLing.

But it also means you’ll probably have to stick to the essay word limit which can get very painful.

It also gives you that last minute time to finish anything you might need before deadlines. Personally, I sent my essays out so late that the only thing that saved me was that we were ahead of the US time wise. Cut it too fine, and could have gone wrong. Not that I’m complaining since I got in where I wanted, but it’s a risk - it gives you that little leeway, but if you leave it for then there are a thousand things that could go wrong. Also, like she mentioned, the word limit is a pain in the ass. Essays on paper can stretch that a bit.

Both have their pros and cons. Depends on which you’re more comfortable with.

hello,

i’ll be applying to 4 ivys this year - harvard, pton, cornell, penn.

i wanted to know if it makes sense applying to yale, columbia, brown and dartmouth. i want to major in computer science\engineering.

i am also interested in economics so I might change my major.

i can only go if I get aid!

thanks

i love TiT’s

aastavik applying to brown sound good . Others are either not very good for ur major or aid is freaking competitive (columbia gives aid to 4 intels everyyear)

Speaking personally, I’m going to to Brown this year and i know for a fact that it has an extremely strong econ department. It isn’t need blind, so it might affect your chances, but it’s still worth applying to. I’m not too sure about engineering at Brown, so you’ll have to check up about that. But if your undecided about your major, then again, Brown is a great school cuz it has the most liberal curriculum.

For econ, consider Columbia also. Great econ faculty, but aid will be an issue again.

Of the IVY’s, the only actually need blind ones are Harvard, Yale and Princeton. But then again, they’re tough enough to get into on their own. :)

hey nomad

where did u get ur figure of 4 intls getting aid from?

thanks

Can u all plz explain to me one thing? How will my school teacher fill reports about me in an Online Application form?? Also, for 2006 batch, MIT will give an Option of TOEFL & SAT II in two subjects includting one in Maths for non-native english speakers. Will the chances of admission be affected if an Indian(who has throughout studied in an English Medium School) opts for this?

and can someone tell me %age-wise about how much emphasis is given on SAT scores, school marks(whose 12th board marks are out) and EC, in Institutes like MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Duke.
Shashank do u remember the test date of Nanyang?

The teacher recommendation forms aren’t meant to be submitted online anyway. You print them out from the Internet, give them to the teachers to fill up and then mail it yourself (or maybe the teachers will volunteer to mail it for you for confidentiality reasons in which case it’s a good idea to provide them with stamped and addressed envelopes)

check their financial website aastavik. It clearly says so

Ronty i really doubt anyone can answer your question about percentages but they do place special emphasis on your Ec’s and your SAT scores . Next come Class rnak and % i think

Ok dude Sachit…Why will anyone send you their Reccs or any other material…beats me.
Look in short…for Internationals like us Indians they judge us on a relative note and boards marks are given max emphasis with regard to marks(actually class rank is what is more important)…but see what you people ask is how important transcripts are for HYPSM or how they look at them…but basically to get into these schools you need something more than marks (much much more).

Regarding the Transcript thingy…My school is giving me a grade report i.e. converting our numerical system to A-F. This would save my school as well as colleges time req. to understand different systems.(I mean if 75% in our internal exams means A then there is no need to explain it to the college my school automatically gives me the grade).

Online applications are the way for me…but everyone has different preferences.

I am leaving for lucknow on Monday for the COFAS competition…So hope to come back to TiT in a day or two.

Oh and whatever the case is Class marks are given more importance than SAT (Let’s face it a dud can get a good score on the SAT’s if he’s lucky)

Hey give me your views:
Should I opt for Interviews for various colleges (like MIT,Princeton, UPenn)
I say opt because actually I am geographically far away from interviewers according to the adcomms so I can get one if I want to or I can go without it.

oh sorry Sachit…By the request of essays and Reccs i think you meant the people who already have bin admitted someplace.

vampiro your class percentage can mean little because you might as wel be coming from an easy educational sytem and getting low marks or going through a rigorous programme and getting low but reasonable marks. A 95 % in state board is more doable than a 95 % in cbse and so on( its like 90 % in cbse?) . That’s why the colleges use the SAt’s to gauge your academic level first especially for internationals but when it comes to us students it becomes much more easier to look at high school grades as they are more used to them. But bein an intel u need both ( good sats and grades ) so there is no real room for letoff either way

definitely yes, if you feel comfortable with interviews. even if it requires traveling.
given a choice, go for an interview for your ‘not the top choice’ earlier. in my experience, my comfort level (and performance)with interviews increased as i did more of it. i started out horrendeously with the infamous MIT interview, where i totally screwed up and ended it with the midnight brown interview, where we talked about everything from college, politics to beers and babes.

as far as relative imp. of diff. things go, there is no magic formula. as previously mention, decent SAT I and II scores will get you in the door. As for the class grades, most colleges use some form of CRS (converted rank score) as explained in the appendices of the book “what it really takes to get into the ivy league” (wont recommend buying that book, but look up the CRS appendix in a book store, if you are curious). all these will get you in the door.
bcoz the intel pool (esp indian pool) tends to be very competitive for SATs etc., imo, i think what gets 1 in these colleges includes - their essays, ECs and consistency between essays, ECs and letter of reco. + luck.
finally, have 1 thing in your application that no1 else would have. you got to remember that there are 15000+ applications and if your app looks like the other 10000+, it might not attract enough attention. but if you have that 1 distinguishing thing (could be 1600+2400, national/international awards, ECs, extra material or your picture in playboy/playgirl) it will atleast warrant a discussion amongst the adcom

post # 1200 most probably my last 00 posting. ab, its been fun fighting for these! ;)
