The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

Hi all! Is it a good idea to go for 3 A level exams for people like me who have not performed brilliantly in class 12 (CBSE 2005)? Has anyone from here applied to a UK University with SAT scores?

i have one question…

I have another friend from the same background who will be aplying to US and have some univ in common.
He has better marks in classes 09, 10 and boards ( by 3-4%) but our grade report for boards are equal… AS WE HAVE GOT CONVERTED official report in grades in comparision with for US apps…

Since he knows me… he also has got the conversion and letter. My sat scores( but we are retaking) and EC are way better than his ( EC actually much much) So how will adcomm compare our application. or will they ??? Will his better school and academic record till class 10 have a negative impact for me…

However , i have better grades in class 12 which i do not want to send … as they are good but not ___…

Since both of share the same education background. what will be the effect…what are the things they will compare

Please comment…and advice ofcourse old members and new informative ones

Ankur Modi

this is nowhere near the last record…350 something pages…its crazy

I didn’t send in my grade 12 marks, infact I haven’t even sent my final transcript, yet :o

Since you are taking a gap year (you are right??) I think you should definitely take the A-levels and take more then 3 if you can.

In my opinion, SAT scores and CBSE marks act more as qualifiers. Once the schools feel that you can handle the work load then it’s comes down one question … and that question is - how interesting AND creative are you?

For eg, today at the convocation ceremony the head adcom read out the best recommendation letter they got this year, and that letter was from a 10 yr old describing how the student “J” entertained all the kids around him and how he taught them football etc - it was amazing.

Now this doesn’t mean that you guys should do the same thing :stuck_out_tongue: … but you get the picture, right?

Tip for guys ‘n’ gals going to universities/colleges in the coming weeks - cliques are formed REALLY FAST - atleast get to know a couple of people really well. Don’t stretch yourself too thin trying to get to know EVERYONE!!!

Dukes really a fun place…

lots of drinking eh…

im new to this forum…and i want to go to princeton.

suchitara i heard u got into princeton, someone else from the forum told me…

can u pls tell me wat your credentials were so that i can assess whether its worth applying to or not

thanx

no wonder!

Thank u “Hello”.
Is it necessary to take TOEFL? And do they(ETS) send any TOEFL study material for those who have registered for their test?
Anyone here who applied to UK universities with SAT scores?
  Cheers  :)

Apoorva, do u know the process of how people like me can take A level exams in India? I found some info on www.cie.org.uk but i dont know whether they allow any private test takers… and how to register for the Nov/Dec A level exams? Please reply at ur earliest…

ronty007, i think private test takers can register for the A level exams through the British Council. At least that’s how they do it in Nepal.
And oct/nov exams are almost here now. Check for the registration deadline. And with just over a month before the exams start, the deadline may have already passed or at least is almost here.
btw, I’m taking the oct/nov exams too… good luck!

aaron, r u a private test taker? WHat r ur subjects for A level exams and whats their level with respect to CBSE 12th?

i’m not a private test taker. my school offers A levels and is a registered test center. the school takes care of our exam registrations and so it’s easier for me. :)

what r ur subjects?

A level: Physics, Chemistry, Math
AS level: English language and literature, Environmental Management

what subjects are you planning on taking?

A level Physics, Maths and Chemistry
(and maybe Biology too)…

u r from which place and school? how was ur O level exams?

me from Nepal. I didn’t take the O-level exams but the grade 10 exams here.
However, I did take a few IGCSE subjects:
Coordinated Sciences (Double Award) A*
English as a first language A
Math (Double Award) A*
Additional mathematics B

and that was with just a few months of studyin… and very lightly too!
