nycmom is there any reason why you dont want your kid to stud high school in the US ?

very good reason - her dad would not allow it. also not sure she is ready for HS here, I’ve heard it can be tough coming from an Indian environment.
but then again I’m an overprotective mom.
do you advise otherwise?

yeah, i think she should study in the US instead of india, she’ll get more opportunities for ECs etc. plus if she’s a smart kid she can actually do advanced stuff like AP courses or even college courses, which may help you cut down on tuition fees later in collge becasue she’ll get credit for those classes. if you go from india it’s a lot harder to place out of courses (technically you can but it is a lot harder), even though we do more advanced stuff than them

i’m no expert but i think switching to a US high school as an upcoming junior might be really tough… the fitting in part i mean. especially for someone who isn’t all that outgoing and confident, last two years in a new high school can be rough. college is different as there are all kinds of people… more mature and more receptive.

but it all depends on you child and the high school i guess… might just click, it’s difficult to tell. a fren of mine moved into a cali high school junior year and fit in well… but the high asian popn at the school made it easier for him. so it can work. jus need to make ur choice wisely!

just my 2 cents… ;)

yea but in terms of gettin into college, a US high school gives you the advantage i guess!

If a student is presently studying in a country where PSAT’s are not available he/she is exempted from the requirement. Only the final Sat scores need to be given. No benchmark scores for ICSE exam however anything above 80% will be sufficient even for the best.
They do not look for HSc results as decision will be out before them( In march / April).
Genrally ppl take SAt in the senior year of school -class 12
hope this helps. … Do post further queries if u have any
:):):)

and yes if she is studying in india …it wont be a problem… She can have a unique aplication this way… Infact as of funding the opportunities remains the same as they are based on citizenship… she could show her uniqueness by showing what she did in india and faced challenges…

smartmind, and all you others…thanks, your replies help a lot, since i’m kinda clueless about the undergrad admissions process here, and it’s hard w/ the applicant in India. I did go to grad school here but that’s a dif animal…

smartmind…i’m surprised to hear that funding is the same for intl students, thought it would be much more competitive. also, the 80% ICSE sounds encouraging, thought it would be higher than that. any idea of this is also true for Columbia? what about princeton, yale, harvard - higher requirements? what are avg sat score requirements for these schools.
Columbia is my first choice for her simply bec I’m in nyc, but I would not be disappointed if she got into pton :)

funding is definitely not same for intels… but in ur case since the citizenship is American( Correct me if am wrong), she would be elligible for the fin aid.Being in an international school would not harm in any possible way.
Also ICSE is Class 10, if she has given it already and got the scores …nothing to say.but if not i suggest working hard as it can be useful tool in admission. Class 10 is too early to start the process though.anyways…
As per the sat requirements , anything above a 1470 in Old sat scale or 2200+ In new sat would be gr8 for even the best places…

Mr.Hiren could you plz… Tell us when u had been here…for what you told doesnt seem to hold
No indian Forum 2 yrs ago…
Well I hav checked the records which clearly say that it started in 2003… and plz … dont post advertising messages here… Indian Thread is just not the place for it.if you have put the stuff on Ebay, wait there… U will get response… but this is not the way…
i strongly object to what was posted by you…

hey smart-> who’s this Hiren guy and what was posted. I am puzzled.

gotcha Nomad. I’ll apply to TAMU. and w t f is this purdue’s ECE is already full for fall 2006. Guess that’s the one that goes from my list.

nycmom369-> first thing you have to know is. IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START THINKING ABOUT THE ADMISSION PROCESS. Next get this book for your daughter from Amazon “Get Into Any College: Secrets of Harvard students” by Gen and Kelly Tanabe. This will be her guide for high school.
Now tell me are you an international or a US citizen and can you pay completely for your daughters education. See if you are a US citizen don’t care to read but if you or more appropriately your daughter is Indian Citizen then get this.
You should not apply for aid to colleges which are not need blind and very miserly.Eg. Stanford and Upenn but otherwise anyone would die to go there. if your child is good then her chances will double to get into the big colleges.
Going to a US school wont matter that much. but since your child is in ninth then tell her to do a lot of EC’s and if she is good in studies always study higher level things and aim for the olympiads (infact if she’s good in computers then IOI will be very good as it is relatively easy in the sense of preparing). Also tell her to focus on one thing mainly and then do a secondary and two supplementary activities. The primary EC is what we’ll call her ‘hook’ later in the admission process. The EC need not be studies based it can be anything like singing, dancing etc.
Now let me think what all I can tell you

thx smartmind.
No I’m not a us citizen , so i guess chances of fincl aid are slim?
she has not yet taken her ICSE, is in 9th grade right now, but I’ll definitely tell her to get on it! your posts will serve as a nice pep talk and hopefully wake up call…
right now i think she’s still in lala land, needs to get serious soon

Now look one more thing-> don’t send her to SAT prep classes so soon. Just tell her to build her vocabulary which she can easily if she likes to read. This is not the time for SAT prep. Time for SAT prep is the three month holiday which we get after ICSE. and the bes time would be to give it in october of class 11th. and retak if donebadly in June of 12th.
But since she is starting so young so I think that for now she can forget the science SAT II’s but she can prepare for an unconventional one like french, spanish or US history or World history basically one which will make her stand out of the crowd.
oh and one more thing…keep all this advice in a file, it’s all personal experience.

hey vampiro,
glad to hear that im not too early.
would guitar and tennis and horse riding serve as ECs? also, does she need to show awards in ECs, or just participation? she can show some local awards in riding, but dont know how seriously they take those.
I see that you are also 16 yrs old (she is 15).
I’m telling her to start focusing on grades, but Bombay kids seem to have very busy social lives. are u from bbay? would really like for her to talk to someone who gives her a realistic idea of what it takes to get into a good school here, and tips on what to read, study, etc.
thanks for the book reco, will definitely pass it on to her.
I’m sending her links to free online practice PSATs.

oh and one most important thing which all us CC’ers endorse. Tell her to have fun in life and take it easy on herself always.

actually nycmom can we do this on a messenger MSN

add me to your messenger in the meanwhile I restart my computer. The stupid messenger always gives problems.
this is the id

vampiro…very helpful.
may i ask - are you already in college here, if so which one, and if you’d rather not answer that its ok.
i looked at your college application list in an earlier post and am actually adopting it for her ![]()
to be frank, her grades are not the greatest right now, erratic, sometimes very good sometimes not so good.
also, her crazy school offers this chance for kids to opt out of science (which is unbelievable to me!) and she dropped it and took commerce instead.
will that hurt her chances? do top schools require science?

vampiro, dont have messenger at work - crazy company policies!
can you do aim?
