or even yahoo im:

nah no science not the least bit. I mean some do give very little priority but basically tell her to atleast take maths that is somewhat required.
Sound like a college guy don’t I. well no i am not in college. Actually i am in class 12th. but see I am also in ICSE and have gone thru the process pretty thru and know my mistakes so I can advise. + just tell your daughter to hit the 92+ in the boards the internal resuls don’t matter that much for Indians.ok. Guitar i.e. Music is not bad at all. tennis well maybe but then she has to be good in it (by 12th I mean) and horse riding is not that substantial. But guitar or music is good so tell her to take it up. and gt involved in good amount of Social service + get a job every summer (1 week, two week anything).

lets just continue here.

what do you mean by 92 in boards - 92% in ICSE?? that’s tough, no?

she is taking maths, thankfully, and is good in that.
she is excellent in laguages, in English literature, essay writing, etc…but dont know if colleges place much emphasis on that.

did you take classes for icse?

they do they do. Being good in lit and lang will help her a lot (in SAT’s,in Essays u know). I joine coaching but usually always bunked because it’s not worth it for class 10th (still I managed 91%) it is tough to get 92+ in boards but then she is also up against tough opponents. I mean she has to give her best although anything over 85 is good for US schools but it cant hurt to try and get more %age.

ok, got to fwd her your messages, so she understands how she needs to perform.
how r ur applications going?
if you dont mind my buggin you, ill be in touch again
thx for all the great advice!

no probs. just PM me the date (usually keep it fridays or saturdays u know when my school is closed)on cc.
My applications are going…actually i’ve just started but well I think i am having fun with them so in a way they are going well.

sounds good.
good luck!

About Vampiro’s last post. There is no requirement per say to get into an IVY league school. I didn’t make the 92% in my ICSE but I’m still in an IVY. And know loads of ppl who didn’t do that well in ICSE but got in. ICSE is important, but there are basically five factors the way I see it that are FAR more important to the admission process. In no order of importance, they are

High school grades (and consistent ones - probably THE most important factor. Way more important than 9th and 10th marks).

Extracurriculars

SAT scores

Essays

Reccomendations.

However, good 10th standard grades never hurt anyone. All I’m saying is that they will neither make nor break your application.

See WC my point was that if a person is serious about getting through a good college he should work hard in every sphere… I mean the adcomms should know that this person is a sincere worker and he has worked hard in every possible way and there is no lack in his dedication.that’s all.
Because after a certain level all goes to your luck for the big schools.

P.S. I forgot which school you’re in…sorry but please post the name.

I’m not denying that working hard is important. Just that 11th and 12th grade count for way more then 10th. But consistency is what they look for.

I’m at Brown btw.

*~"her grades are not the greatest right now, erratic, sometimes very good sometimes not so good.
her crazy school offers this chance for kids to opt out of science and she dropped it and took commerce instead.

 1. will that hurt her chances?
 2. do top schools require science?*

The hurting of chances may mostly depend on the field of intended major.
If the intended major is Science related, like Engineering or pure science, then it does matter. But there are more majors outside science in most universities and if the planned major is not science related, then opting out science will not matter.

Top universities don’t require science for non-science majors. For example, someone by the name “Laila” went to MIT despite not doing science in the school, because her intended major was/is Economics (Someone correct me if I am wrong here).

An occasional fall in grades will be seen better than an occasional rise. Hence grade consistency will be seen as an indication of the real academic calibre of the applicant and maintaining high grades, that too with consistency, will put daughter at an advantage.

SHABIN

.

NYCMom 2 years of science is recommended (but not required) by most universities.

Ritz from these boards got into Harvard from the commerce stream but I think she may have had science in 9-10.

90+ in ISC is a good thing to have for the Ivy Leagues if you don’t have a HUUUUUGE hook.

Your daughter should find a way to explain the erratic nature of her grades because adcoms like consistency (or consistent improvement!)

My grades fluctuated a bit in 11 but I think most US adcoms know that it’s a rocky year and take that into account when evaluating Indian apps.

And Princeton’s great :)

Can anyone of those accepted in a top US university, send me their college admission essays? Plz PM me or mail me at ronty007(at)yahoo(dot)com
Plz plz

me too!!!

plz mail em to me at sachitgupta@gmail.com

I have already passed my 12th Exams from CBSE board. I want to get admitted in Computer Science department. Please analyse my chances at

Texas A & M
University of Southern California
Washington University at St. Louis
Princeton (ED)
Cornell University
Rose Hulman Institute of Technology
University of Pennsylvania
Yale University
Northwestern University
John Hopkins University
Dartmouth College
Duke University

Academics:

I know I dont have a good chance, but still I would like to hear comments on my chances. Any suggestions on how to improve my chances are welcomed…

I have posted this message in ‘What are my chances?’ subforum, but was not receiving enuf comments… Please Comment.

You might want to recheck if Rose Hulman provides finaid to internationals.

And be sure not to miss any test dates… if you want to take the SAT and the 4 subject tests, you’ll need three test dates. You’ll need to take them in oct 8, nov 5 and dec 3. the last one could be dangerously close to college app deadlines.

and check if your november scores will reach pton for ED consideration. dec. scores will be too late for ED i think.

and you have a good chance at any of those universities. just make sure you stand out because internationals applyin to these unis usually have great stats too. and there’s always the luck factor as you must already know.
texas A&M btw should be a shoo in goin by your stats alone.

good luck

yes, i have planned for the SAT test dates. any more comments plz?

looks you have a good chance…ur EC’s are great.

one advice, why dont u apply to berkeley??? its one of the best for computer science!!

Sachit I am quite sure that Berkeley does not offer finaid to intls and the one off scholarship they give is to the students (who are 99% admitted to other finaid giving ivy or someplace) so that they consider berkeley as an option.
Ronty, this is what adides told me “Don’t worry about knowing your chances, no one can tell your chances but the decision letter” I believe in his advice and I think you should too. Just know this that you are competing in the bright students category: more accurate chances cannot be given by anybody.
And Aaron I am quite sure that the december dates reach the colleges well in time. It’s the january date u need to worry about.

Oh and another thing adides said which my counsellor seconds is that there is little point in applying early to ivies or selective schools coz they wait to get the whole pool and admit the best (because they have to admit only 4-5).
