The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

1) <a href=“seriously%20in%20the%20end%20they’ll%20send%20you%20a%20stupid%20letter%20saying%20that” title=“if u do not apply for finaid then your chances will be great”>i* –> They send in the very beginning!! It’s so annoying. And btw I was not waitlisted, I was rejected. Princeton was the only univ decent enough to not reject me outright…

2) Math IIc - I got 650 :stuck_out_tongue: BTW I’m sitting for SAT II in november [someone asked?]… math 2, physics and one another who-knows-which subject…

3) abduke is a cynical person and I suggest you do pay attention to what he says otherwise you will start fantasizing and will get carried away by what we called the “cheerleader attitude” … He will bring you back to earth. Get hold of him. He doesn’t show up often too. [ ]

4) It is weird, how we are in awe of admissions people while applying. After coming to IUB, I have been to the admission office and met them… they are simple normal people [as opposed to Fred Hargadon’ish]. The Director of admissions can be found in our servery during lunch, and we address him by his first name :)

5) Surya - all the best man. I seriously wish you get in princeton ED and continue the bjp congress discussion with aditya and bring the whole place down in flames and then get suspended for the semester for abusing sucharita and etc etc ;)

cool man…just that the admision proces is so overwhelming anyone can get mad…
And best of luck mercurysquad for ur sat 2 ( thought i wud say it now coz i dont see u here so often now

btw a general question to you all . admitted and applicants :

Which colleges have you selected as a safety for applying if your primary critereon is financial aid…

Like which colleges have high acceptance…can act as a safety for a gud indian applicant ( science based) and at the same time provide decent financial aid to intels…

All of u tell which ones are in ur list … coz u must have got safeties for sure… like colgate is one… ohio wesleyan.etc…

colgate a safety???

smartmind my counselor told me to apply to ohio state, iowa and arizona state for safety…she said that i would easily get an aid there…she also told me to apply to drexel in which i can easily get a 100% aid but u know drexel is like 55th in engineering so i think its of no use…

well she also mentioned clark, bryant and boston univ…but i dont think u should apply there since u have a great record…

sachit:the conf. is on the 18th, 6.30 @ the oberoi. RSVP required.
u talking of the oberio in bombay right… or does delhi have one too?

the conf is in the DELHI OBEROI …as far as i know

prashant…thanks for the good wishes. I hope it works out well.

Anyway…which IIs are you taking?

I’m so screwed that i have no choice except to take Lit. I simply suck at Chem and Bio, done physics and 2c, and the only other choice which was world history got thrown out the window cuz its offered only in Dec.

dexter i dunno man…I dont think those colleges offer any form of aid to Internationals. ya know ohio state, Iowa and ASU.
(btw if you dont like drexel coz its 55th in Engg. then why in the world are you applying to the others as they are not exactly stellar)
Correct me if I am wrong but I think you are talking abt Ohio Weslyan or ohio state University. Please be clear when writing names of colleges coz there are tens of them which differ by marginal difference in the name.

vampiro i am not applying to any of the colleges i’ve mentioned…i know i wont be satisfied there even if i get a large amount of aid…iam quite sure about Drexel,Clark and Boston Univ…they give a lot of aid to my school students…Although in leser amount, Ohio States Univ, Iowa and ASU also give aid to intels…i mean thats what my counselor told me…iam not sure how far is this accurate…

also vampiro iam not applying to UPenn…so should i come to the conf??..i dun wanna be in a situation where i would have nothing to do…i hope u understand what i mean…

callthecops why do you need to take the 3rd SAT II subject…almost all the colleges(except MIT and Harvard) require only 2 subjects–Maths Level 2 and 1 science (for engineering)…

I thought princeton required them…3 apart from writing

yes MIT, Princeton, Harvard , and JHU require 3 sat subject tests…

Since the prob is the same with me …i am going to take the MAths 1c and 2c both along with Physics…

I have mailed colleges which require 3 sat2s …got replies frm harvard, MIT and JHu so far …they say i can give 2 Maths as subject tests…and 1 science

And well except for the Boston University I cant think myself as going to any of these safety universities no matter how much aid they give us…

I wanted some gud safety colleges that gave aid but had gud repo also… but it seems that this combination is impossible…

And even if u dont apply to Upen n u shud attend the conference… coz u can get useful info pertaining to them directly but also the ivies in general…

I just hope that with the little safety i have …i end up at the right place

ok, i had a question reg Purdue

Should I even bother applying? I mean, I’m not too keen on Purdue (it would be my last choice). And I’ve heard stuff like 'I got 1800/2400 (or 1200/1600) on the SAT and I’m in Purdue". Yeah, it’ll be a safety if I apply, but whaddya think?

u cud… how does it matter … it is a gud place and takes in whooping no. of applicants … so sat figures are low… the admission decision will be with you …keep it may be just for the sake of it.

If you want aid…then I dont think there is any point in applying to Purdue I personally have striked it off my list ever since I heard that max they dish out is a 13K 4yr scholarship.
Your wish though…but I reccomend apply to someplace like Boston Univ or George Washington Univ which will give you a good scholarship and then probably transfer someplace else…if you are compelled to go to you safety (I mean if you want to keep a school just for the sake of it or your last choice u should keep one in which everything will turn out favourable and for a finaid needy candidate Purdue is not the place)

well, I have USC as a safety. But beyond that I haven’t found any safety with good aid & rep. I don’t really wanna go to a LAC so… If you guys know of any other safeties let me know

13K per year can’t be the max. Their website (and their rep at the Oberoi fair) said smthg abt a award which gives 5K for the first year and 7k for the next 3 years each. Check it out its on their site as well. But beyond that I don’t know. I believe there are Departmental scholarships for engg. which can get full aid.

** STANFORD UNIVERSITY **

How many of you are applying to Stanford University?

I need some clarifications in the application process to Stanford, which are mentoned below:

ApplyYourself;
On page 5 of this Pdf file, Stanford mentions the following under ESSAYS (FORM 2 …) :

  • We strongly prefer that you do not print or handwrite your responses. *

** What does it mean? **
Is it applicable for those applying through paper or also for online applicants?

Do you have any idea if and/or how seeking financial aid will affect the admission chances of International applicants?
Ref . Page 6 of the above Pdf document where the following is mentioned:

  • Stanford has limited amount of financial aid for internatonal students, and, in most cases, the need for aid will be a factor in the admission decision.
International students who do not request consideration for financial aid at the time they apply for admission will not be eligible to apply for aid at Stanford throughout their UG years. *

Any other information that you feel relevant in the applcation process to Stanford will be appreciated highly.
