The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

if u r applying online, all u can do is type

yes, asking for aid will reduce ur chances to almost nil (admission is need based)

first asaatvik … … well u have got wrong info dude.,…
the scholarship is a 5k for 1st yr then 2.5 k for remaining 3 yrs …check on the website here http://iss.purdue.com …go to undergrad …applying…scholarship

2nd Shabin… well dont print or hand write means that u must type them and not fill by hand…

And finaid for intels at stanford = Extremely diff.,
Point is that there are so many well qualified applicants at stanford ready to pay full ride that to demand aid there is like killin urself
Also going by the past records Stanford is among the stingiest of all top schools when it comes to asking for finaid for international students

Shabin
“We strongly prefer that you do not print or handwrite your responses.”
means that you have to take out a computerised print of the essay you cannot write it by hand in either running hand or all capitals and neither can you type it with a typewriter (It has to be printed).

Yes asking for Finaid scre ws your chances big time (even bigger than in Caltech). Stanford is very famous for giving next to nil aid.

One useful info is that Stanford app is my last priority (even after UPenn) because their process is buggy and they dont even admit that many finaid wanting student who are internationals.

Thank you all,

Well, those were very quick responses.

Now please do provide me with some excellent universities that meets the criteria given here:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=87164</a></p>

Apart from them, which are the other universities that give Financial Aid to International students ?

SHABIN

.

yeah, sorry abt that. my info was screwed up.

so can somebody pls recommend univs with good aid and reputation? (good safeties)

guess there arent any

asaatvik, smartmind, vampiro:
Which are your target universities?
List them in the order of your preference.

.

ah target Univs this may take some time: And btw no priorities.(finaid is the only priority after MIT)

okay…before I post the list…I am kinda confused with you guys I mean I just cant understand the meaning of good safety (I mean how can a safety be good…and if it is good how can it be a safety). The point is that it is obvious that if a school is a safety then it wouldn’t be as reputed as MIT and all so why waste your time constantly posting about “good safeties” I mean what are you looking for really…someone to tell you that “yes this school is a safety and ya know its as good as MIT”.
You might say that Purdue is a safety (but its only with regard to admission…and that my friends in the US is no big deal) If admission is the only criteria then in that case UPenn is also a sort of a safety for us coz abt 50-55 Indians go there every year (the ones who can pay…and have stats usually below us cc’ers stats) but still we call it a reach dont we.

and now the univs…

1.MIT
2.Princeton
3.Caltech
4.Duke
5.Harvard
6.Cornell
7.Stanford(maybe if I get enough time and have cash to spend…they dont entertain fee waivers)
8.UPenn
9.Johns Hopkins
10. Washington Univ in St.Louis
11. Yale
12. Dartmouth
13. Rice
14. Northwestern
15. USC
16. Texas A&M
17. UT Austin
18. Brown
19. Columbia
20. UT Dallas
21. Boston Univ

vampiro u r applying for engineering right??

hows the reputation of USC in engineering…i mean last year it ranked at about 22nd but this year its at 7th!! thats a big jump!!

i am usually at ti or ivy, and yeah i dont party much on thursdays (if i am done preparing for my friday physics test, i do) bu otherwise its pretty much saturdays, anyways see ya round (yeah right, u invisible women you!)

Hello and to whom it may concern,
On behalf of the Chinese thread, we’d like to express our deepest sympathy to those victims killed in the severe earthquake last week in Kashmir. As college students or applicants, we couldn’t contribute much to the disaster relief. Yet, if we come across any opportunities to donate or help, we will provide what we have.
Again, we condole those unfortunate ones in that tragedy,
May they rest in eternal peace.

Chinese thread

Ive heard that applying to many ivys doesnt to much to help your chances to get into any of them. A friend of mine told me that the ivys constantly talk to each other about the applicants and if they find one applicant applying to many other uni’s then they dont consider him ‘focused’. it didnt make sense to me.

can anyone tell me if theres any truth in that ?

they only discuss ED applicants i think…!

wut’s the point discussing regular applicants. if harvard and yale both like an applicant… are they both goin to reject him because he applied to both? and no way is one of them going to say… “u take him”!!

but adcoms do have ways of finguring out if an applicant is the type who applies to all ivies just to see if s/he can get into one i think!

Tangsdaily ,

On behalf of the whole Indian Thread And the Indian Community here at Collegeconfidential.com , I thank you for the sympathy expressed. However as god would have it, it took its toll only from selected regions in Indian and a majority from Pakistan. It was nice of you to have said this on behalf of the chinese thread, though i have little reservations regarding such condolences at CC. Anyways, hope such catastrophic events don’t happen again in the near future.

Yes, ivies only discuss abt the ED applicants , not Rd ones…

They can usually judge on the basis of the quality of the application that whther a simillar one will go to their competitors( Yes) or not. They can even judge its probability of acceptance at high and accurate levels. And all the schools know that gud applicants apply to majority of gud places to have better chances. they just cant call this as" not being focussed". One can be eqully focussed on several gud colleges…

It wud be stupid of one to apply only to harvard , just to be focussed and reduce the probability of acceptance to almost nill…

i think there is some truth to what rishba said… heard about it someplace else too
if u apply to all the ivies they think that you will get in one of them atleast…hence they wont give u admssion in their college thinking youll get in somewhere or the other
am i making sense???
