The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

@ktwin - Dunno man, I think my strong grades really helped me…a LOT. I mean common, Michigan, Wisc-Madison and Texas-Austin with a 1720!!!

They obviously saw that I was a weak standardized test taker…

However I’m not too sure how far you can go with that conversion scheme; I mean on an ISC/ICSE transcript, 90+ is given an A; 80-90 a B; and so on…

Um… aditya, isn’t that what I said?

The validity of such a conversion scheme is always going to be in question. And perhaps, we’ll never know.

All I know is that, Purdue converted my 85%(Grade 11) to a GPA of 4.0. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have got the scholarship.

@k_twin: Really? ICSE is that strict. In CBSE anything in 80s or even high 70s is an A for most subjects, barring Computer.

Hopefully, Stanford uses a nice and relaxed grading conversion chart. (Though for me, I’m rather screwed whichever way they convert; curse my school and its insane grade deflation and its low class averages, I say.)

I rather suspect that top universities look more at essays than grades for Indians, though – the Indian applicant pool is full of academic geniuses with nothing else going for them. At least, from what I’ve seen. And that isn’t exactly what they’re looking for.

why dont u login to the chat room?

Noldo; if the second part of your post’s correct; (which I suspect it is); that’s for the best. :D

@ajayc, I’m not a real fan of chat rooms; (not that a forum’s really different) but I can split hairs moderately well :)

How man intls get into stanford every year?

around 6-10 from india.

damn…there goes stanford too

well the is the avg cost of applying to around 10 universities? average!

And yes I was just wondering. Like suppose if I apply early decision to Stanford. It means that I cant apply early decision to any other college? OR If i get selected at Stanford, I withdraw my applications at other Colleges?

Stanford is not an early decision college. It is Single Choice Early Action meaning that you can apply to only one college early but you can apply to any number of colleges regular.

Question: Has anyone else been contacted for a Harvard interview from India? I just got an email and am wondering about whether to go.

…both

Nope not both. Even if accepted you need not enroll. It’s not early decision. It’s SCEA.

i still cant figure out which colleges I can get into and the colleges which I cant! Some people say I can make some say I cant! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=303837</a>

I wish my parents were rich!

ED: You can apply to only one because if accepted - you have to enroll. It logically follows that you can’t apply ED to 2 places.

if you apply ED to any college, you CANNOT apply ED to another college.
The only exception is if you get rejected from a college through the ED 1 plan and apply to another college through the ED 2 plan.
If accepted under any of these plans you HAVE to enroll.
But no plan will prevent you from applying to any number of colleges through RD.

I missed out on that point Lakshya…thanks!

Did anybody here apply to the University of Michigan?
I just saw the email saying I got in. My first acceptance, yay!
