Yeah, I checked that. It isn’t there. I guess my letter was not mailed with the first batch.

Btw, someone on CC’s started a wiki to serve as a repository of info for future generations. I’ve added an International Students section (got a bit of time on my hands :)), feel free to add to it. Here’s the link: http://collegeadmissions.pbwiki.com/

The password’s “niagara”

@dda…No, not yet…I think I’ll pay after 5th April…for obvious reasons :D

@fuzzylogic…Yeah, I had to pay $200+ for the GPA conversion thingy…my mother forced me into doing it, or else I would have applied to GaTech either. Anyways, I got a GPA of 4.003, and every single subject was given an A. But it sure was worth it.

And congrats to twins. :)

Thanks /* */

Pyrotechnic, where else did you apply, out of curiosity?

Oh! I forgot. :o

Congrats twins!

oh thanks :D

MIT - Rejected - Like duh.
Caltech - Rejected
Princeton
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell
Univ Illinois UC - Accepted
Georgia Tech - Accepted
UMich AA - Accepted
Purdue U - Accepted

I never really wanted to apply to the CMU and Cornell.
Princeton doesn’t offer a specialized Aerospace degree, but it has an amazing research program. (so I sent in my application at the eleventh hour) Did I mention that all my essays were last minute rush-ins ?

Actually, I applied to all colleges just a few days before their deadlines, because I didn’t want to do Textile engineering at IIT (or “tatti”, a derogatory term the IITians use for that branch). And they even have Flower Engineering. How bad is that ? Yeah, I don’t have a gr8 chance of getting a rank below 1000 in IITJEE. Hence the “Chalo America” movement.

Congrats twins!!! (Do you mind when people refer to you as “The Twins”?)

Whoo…that wiki is mighty good looking.

Chalo America. Nice.

And I forgot so sorry

Congrats twins!!

whoa! 2 minutes difference…

Then again, I bet most of you guys have seen exact same time.

OH and the wiki is nice. It was quite thoughtful of you to put info on financial aid.

Why is everyone congratulating the twins? (Haven’t been here for a long time…)

Pyrotechnic – Yeah, my initial reasons for wanting to try the States were pretty similar – wanted to do Computer Science, realised I didn’t have a chance in hell of making it to the top 20-30 on the IIT exam (which is the safest place to be if you want comp sci at the Madras branch, which I did), started getting my US apps together (this was…in the 11th, though). And of course, later figured that IIT wasn’t exactly where I saw myself.

naidu – they just got into Carnegie Mellon, that’s why. Welcome back to the madness, also.

On a thoroughly unrelated note, has anyone who isn’t me read anything by Haruki Murakami?

I have two good friends, who are twins. Once, I introduce them to this guy ( a not so good friend of mine) and we have a conversation. Midway through our meeting, the guy, out of curiosity, asks one of the twins - “Hey, when were you born ?” He gets a reply, and then has the idiocy to ask - “And your brother ?”

They both got into CMU.

^ oh okay. Congrats!

Nice one twins. :)

@Rama_GB…Chalta hai !

Noldo, I’ve heard that only if you get a top 10 rank in JEE, you’re good enough to pursue CS at IIT Kanpur. Thats how demanding the course is.

What about the reservation for SC/ST ? That was a real bad move.

And did you come across that article in TOI about the facilities at IIT ? They don’t even have enough hostels for the students. And the faculty-student ratio is around 1:14.

My friend is in IIT Mumbai, and he confesses that the professors aren’t thaaat gr8, its the students who help each other 90% of the time.

Moreover, the professors are decreasing year after year. The IITs are finding it difficult to recruit new professors, because of their stringent selection process. You’d have to be a topper in your undergrad, grad and PhD, then settle for a low salary. How many people would want to do that ??

On the contrary, I never saw myself going to IIT at all. My father told me horror stories of the conditions there based on his talks with his classmates. I pretty much just joined a coaching school to challenge myself.

EDIT: Didn’t see Pyrotechnic’s post. He pretty much summed up what I was going to say.
